Thank you for your feedback about item 920-398, the DG2 by Diane Gilman Multi-Stripe Rib Knit Tunic. You’re right that the name only tells part of the story. The bold color-blocking and dramatic shark-bite hem bring this tunic’s personality to life, making it much more than just stripes. Thanks for helping us spotlight what makes this piece special! You can order it here.

Many, many credit cards give their customers either rewards or special discounts or both. I use my HSN shopping on HSN I use my TJMaxx shopping at their stores I use my Kohls at Kohls and it goes on and on. If you dont want a business’s card then use a card like Discover and get cash back . If that is not an option then you dont get the discounts and that’s prob not going to change because almost all credit cards do it.

Yes girls, I agree. Background noise as chores get done. Nothing in clothing sparks my interest. I do shop from Nordstrom; free shipping-returns..I get better deals and perks with the more sophiscated department stores and get quality on sale. HSN ALWAYS HAS THE SAME VENDORS. I GUESS THEY CAN’T BRING IN NEW ONES.

Diane Gilman “The Queen of Jeans” and a Whole Lot More

Diane Gilman is a true force of nature. She is known as the Queen of Jeans and after reading this interview you will see why. I was so thrilled to get this interview as Diane embodies everything I am searching for on this site.

She has made a monumental success between the ages of fifty-two and seventy-two. She is a spokesperson and role model for her generation. She is positive, upbeat and she lives by the rule every day is a gift even in the face of adversity. Diane is the Queen of a lot more than jeans.

Take me back to the bullet points of your early life just to tell the readers who you were.
I entered UCLA in the Spring of 1964 after spending the Fall and Winter of 1963 living in swinging London, which was the center of the youth fueled Fashion Universe!

My boyfriend at UCLA was a record agent, he took me, to Janis Joplin’s first audition (at the Whiskey a GoGo on the Sunset Strip), so Janis was my introduction to designing denim for some of the Rock n Roll greats. Cher, Jim Morrison, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Sly and the Family Stone and Rod Stewart.

I opened up my shop, “I’m a Hog for You, Baby” on Fairfax Avenue in 1968. One day Cher walked in and literally bought everything in the store. We had to close down for days and sew like maniacs to restock as we handmade every dress. Each one cost ten dollars.

Jump to you at 50, a big turning point in so many lives. What did your life look like?
At 50 my life was a frustrating WRECK. I lost my life mate to cancer at the age of forty-seven. I had been the single caregiver for years. I was emotionally burnt out. My business had been neglected for those years and needed to be rebuilt.

Menopause hit me hard. I had gained a lot of weight. And I was just finishing a devastating professional lawsuit that stripped me of using my name on a label for years. So, my only alternative was tele-retailing. Which wasn’t considered fabulous in my industry. There was seemingly no way out.

Did it ever occur to you to just give up and throw in the towel and be old, unhappy and chubby?
Of course giving up, being a chubby, aging failure occurred to me a million times. But financially, if I gave up, I’d be living on a sidewalk of New York, broke, unhappy and chubby, using a Birkin Bag to beg for five dollar bills. And to give up all my dreams just seemed like the absolute worst option. So, yes, I constantly fought those negative thoughts, but, realistically…

I recognized this was what I call a Life-Wall. It appears seamless and insurmountable, but there’s always a hidden door and it was up to me to find it.

What was the first thing you did to turn it around?
The first thing I did to turn it all around was to rush to an anti-aging doctor. I’d aged hard between the change of life and deep grief. Being in a visual glamour business Tele-Retail/Fashion, my public image was not conducive to success. As I was getting my image under control, I took voice lessons from an opera singer at Juilliard to manage a very annoying high pitched voice that grated on TV. I was setting the stage for success on QVC/HSN.

How did you get to QVC?
Right before Jim died QVC came to me. I’d been a huge design label for washable silks in every department store in America. They wanted that level of fashion business and when I had to tell them I lost my name they said, “no problem” we can just introduce you as Diane. I couldn’t even use my last name. So truly, Tele-Retailing saved my career.

Did you know you could make this work?
It was certainly against all odds. I had lost funded backers, but I still had respect and an industry name and the ability to beg fabric and suppliers. I can be very persuavsive‎ when it’s life or death. So yes, I thought with a lot of luck – I could make it work.

Had Vegas been betting on you did not look like the one to pick, so was it something inside you-you just knew you could do this?
No one was going to bet on me. I had lost my label for several years, I wasn’t young, in a youth-obsessed fashion business, my ex-partners were powerful industry enemies, but I loved being on TV. Since I based my entire career on passion, rather than education or logic. I bet on me and won.

Did you ever imagine you would get as big as you’ve gotten in terms of sales?
I NEVER imagined I’d get that big within the niche industry of Tele-Retail fashion as I did. And the amazing thing is, I busted all sales records. There was no precedent. There had never been this kind of wildly loyal customer response, they just couldn’t get enough. Nor had anyone achieved the sale’s heights we did. But that was not so at the beginning of my career. For years we did washable silks. We had okay sales, steady, but nothing outstanding. It wasn’t until I invented that DG2 Babyboomer, Jean that all broke loose!

You were ahead of the pack in doing fashion items for plus sizes. You’d lost your weight so what made you do this?
It wasn’t so much plus sizes, it was all about creating a form-fitting jean for an imperfect middle-aged body and that included larger sizes. I was middle-aged and even after I’d lost the weight, I was still middle-aged, imperfect and not fitting into bottoms meant for a 20-year-old. I was a 55-year-old. I’ve always believed one of the keys to my design success wasn’t about fashion but it was “thinking on a mass scale.” Since I belonged to the largest generation on earth and we are hitting fifty in record numbers, I believed millions of women must be experiencing my same fashion frustrations. If I could solve some of their elemental self-image issues, I could have a huge business with no competitors. No one wanted to make jeans for less than perfect aging women. Well, I did.

How many jeans have you actually sold? The numbers are all over the place online. 7400 an hour – 150 mil a year – 100,000 pair a day. What is it?
Since I had that lightbulb moment and DG2 was born twelve years ago, we’ve sold almost ten million pairs of jeans. And yes, our all-time sales record was one hundred and fifty thousand pairs of jeans sold in a day! That’s the day a customer calling in crowned me ‘The Queen of Jeans.” ‎Our retail presence at HSN has reached a hundred million dollars I am proud to say.

I’ve read in interviews that you say you’re not just selling jeans? So, what are you selling?
I’m not ONLY selling jeans. I’m selling hope and self-love in a pant leg. I take a very personal “I’m right there with you ladies” emotionally based approach to sales. Because I have worn nothing else but DG Jeans since I first invented them, I can relate my experiences in a very personal heartfelt way, and this resonates. Our customer base at HSN is well beyond half a million engaged, loyal customers.

If you could give one bit of advice to women over fifty who have dropped the ball on their dreams what would it be?
Here’s my mantra for women – Never give in. Never give up. And it’s NEVER too late to pursue your passion and your dreams! EVERYTHING I ever wanted or wanted to become came to me after the age of sixty.

What is the greatest lesson you have learned?
The greatest lesson I ever learned is to be loved and to love in return. I loved my product. I loved my customer (as a sisterhood) and I am ever amazed at how much love they shower me with in return.

I have heard you talk about women pushing the restart button, it’s not easy for everyone. What do you think holds them back?
The restart button is believing in your core idea and yourself. Forget turning to others for their agreement they probably won’t have your vision. No one believed in my middle-aged jean. As a matter of fact, I was the recipient of plenty of derision. But I knew in my gut I was right and had an original, far-reaching idea. Women are held back by image and a sense of worth. Only today are we starting to value our years beyond fifty. We have almost no societal imagery for either support or self-respect.

    What are the restart buttons?
The restart button is passion. Don’t think bottom line and scare yourself. Do ask, do you have an idea that makes your heart race? It could be as simple as baking the best chocolate chip cookies in your town. Or rescuing and rehabilitating abandoned kittens. As long as you truly love it and wish you could make more people happy with your talent or service, you’ve got the restart button ready to press.

You have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. You were immediately very open with your fans and followers. You told me it was a gift.
I was recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer, a very scary moment that morphed into a true gift Cancer is the great revealer. I learned who my true friends are. I learned my ” footprint” was so much bigger than I’d ever dreamed when I got 120,000 Facebook hits in a couple of days after announcing my medical challenge. And so many prayers and well-wishers, it was truly beyond my wildest dreams But also taught me how many hearts I had touched since that diagnosis. I’ve had so many touching, transcendent moments, experienced such pure, loving acts of kindness and reconnected with so many I loved from the past. Truly, the experience has been invaluable. ‎Cancer taught me who I am and my purpose in the universe!

‘Queen of Jeans’ Diane Gilman Talks Shop

Tele-retail fashion pioneer Diane Gilman built an empire out of selling jeans to the baby boomer generation. Not to mention she’s currently Home Shopping Network’s longest running and No. 1 fashion personality, and the No. 2 vendor across all categories. Impressive, too, that her brand brings in more than $150 million in sales annually and has sold more than 9.5 million pairs of jeans to date. Well-done, Diane!

But c’mon. You don’t get that far and that successful without knowing what women want. And Diane has hit on it more than once in this lifetime. While still in college, she opened a store on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles that earned her an A-list clientele of Hollywood starlets. Throughout the 1960s and ’70s, she designed custom denim for some of the music industry’s biggest stars. Then she relocated to New York City in the early 1980s and launched a collection of washable silks, the first of its kind in North America, which was quickly picked up by several major department stores. Her DG2 jeans’ HSN debut was an instant success and sold 5,000 pairs within two minutes. She has since developed a loyal fan base and moves 200,000 pairs of jeans in a single shopping session (!).

Let’s catch up with this indomitable femme to talk everything from how to shun stereotypes to the day Cher walked into her store in L.A.

How did you get into the jeans biz?
I often say my jeans saved my life, and the truth is, they’ve saved my life twice. First, in the 1960s, I started designing jeans as my Clarion Call of Freedom—at last, I could break out of the safe, cookie-cutter designs of the 1950s. Hand embroidery, dyes and rinses, rock ‘n’ roll ragged edges—that tough and sexy look represented rebellion and freedom.

Decades later, when I was in my late 50s, I sought rebellion and freedom again—this time from the matronly fashions women of my age were being offered as our only choice. I longed to feel sexy again. I longed to feel good in my jeans, like I did in the ’60s. This led me to create jeans with stretch and style and new technology that make baby boomer women look and feel great. My DG2 jeans represent hope in a pant leg.

You’ve designed custom denim for some major names like Cher, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. Is that intimidating in any way, or did you see it all as just another day?
Yes and no. When I designed jeans for Janis, she was just starting her career. I met her at her very first audition for record agents, at the famous Whisky A Gogo on the Sunset Strip‎. She was a brilliant wild child, the perfect model for my handmade jeans. Designing for her was fascinating, but not intimidating.

On the other hand, when Cher pulled up to the Los Angeles clothing store I had with a couple friends in 1967—called I’m a Hog for You, Baby—in her chauffeured white Rolls-Royce, that was intimidating. She took a look around, then yelled out, “Sonny!,” and they bought out our entire store of A-line hippie dresses.

What advice would you give to other women who want to launch a brand?
Go with your heart, not your mind. Powerful, deeply personal niche ideas are where success and growth is today. My brand is a perfect example. I had very personal fashion needs as a middle-aged woman. I wanted to wear jeans and feel good about my body again, and I believed millions of women must have been experiencing the same frustrations. That intuition built a $100 million brand.

What’s one thing do you wish you could have a do-over on?
That’s a tough one. Maybe I wish I would have recognized my own power earlier in my life, but then again, having my greatest success come later in life—selling 10 million pairs of jeans and building a denim empire in my 60s—has a very special and uniquely satisfying quality to it.

What advice would you give women when it comes to their denim collection?
Go for a fashion statement, but assess what‎ you want and need. I think, many times, we get too caught up in runway rather than reality.

I love how your book, Good Jeans: 10 Simple Truths about Feeling Great, Staying Sexy & Aging, addresses feminine stereotypes—what mistakes do you think women make when it comes to aging?
Many women give in to the myth that aging equals old, and nothing could be further from the truth. Women today have so many fashion and beauty options to reshape the vision of what 50, 60, 70 and beyond looks like. It’s important to own where you’re at. Give yourself permission to write your own rule book and love yourself.

It may sound corny, but ‎I have made my own rules my whole life, and I am in the middle of transforming my look and life yet again. After six months of chemotherapy for breast cancer that my doctors tell me will be completely cured by year’s end, I lost my signature auburn hair. I depended on my long mane of hair—in red, the color of my youth—to make a fashion statement. But when it was gone, I decided to create a new signature. My hair has started growing back in and it’s pure white! To my surprise, I love it. I look at it as an opportunity to put together a new, individual look—one that’s still chic, sexy and me.

I agree. I would not wear most of the fashion on HSN or QVC. A lot of it looks old and outdated and I AM old and outdated. That doesn’t mean I want to dress that way. Other fashion is ridiculously trendy like wide leg pants, etc. I wore those in the 60’s. I’m not going back. Where are the elegant and classic pieces that were once such a part of both companies? All they care about now is “cheap” (looking anyway). I am not paying $99 for a top that should run $20.

The last few orders I have gotten have not been great> Either one shoe is stretched out & the other fits ….or they have a small tear or something wrong with the seam.
Today I received a box back from something I sent back through UPS with HSN label they sent me to print. It came back to me while we were away. I called customer service & explained that the original label was removed & now was being sent back to me from UPS as the sender?????
I was informed I had missed the window to return the item. I am so done with HSN. This was no my fault & he didn’t seem to have any customer service skills to help me even though I told him I could prove to him it was sent back

Hi @conuremom. We understand how important it is for taxes to be calculated accurately, and we apologize for any confusion this may cause. The tax amounts displayed online are estimates and can vary based on state regulations and the specific items in an order. If you notice a discrepancy or believe sales tax was applied incorrectly, please contact us so we can review the order and share your feedback with our team. We can only confirm whether an error occurred after it has been processed, but we’re always happy to help investigate. If you’d like us to research a specific order, please send the details to HSNSocialCare@hsn.com, and our team will be happy to take a closer look. Apparently HSN doesn’t want to hear feedback nor change their ways about persons not using the app, cannot get the promotional discounts.
I WORK in customer service, taking orders, and 75% of my customer base have gotten rid of their computers, smart phones etc. HELLO. WE EXTEND DISCOUNTS TO EVERYONE..in my company. Too bad HSN is so concerned about saving a buck that they won’t extend to everyone in their customer base..even ones that have been customers for YEARS!!!!!!

Did it ever occur to you that people might be interested in a product and want information they can’t get online and want to see a presentation without all the host’s personal info, giggling and /or drama? If HSN is turning viewers off they should know -they don’t want people changing the channel. They a re running a business and should want the feedback.
If you don’t want to read about complaints don’t come to the threads -see? works both ways

I can’t say specifically when he’ll be back with this item, but after checking the program guide at https://www.hsn.com/watch/program-guide, I see he has multiple shows in September and hopefully this item will be restocked @durkhanai.
