Know that PFOA free pans are recommended now. Research says PFOA isn’t dangerous unless the temperature is over 500. Many vendors sell non stick with PFOA. Do you have an opinion on this topic?
I never use nonstick pans. There are too many dangers associated with Teflon-toxic fumes, flaked off particles, environmental hazards, and so on. I’ll just stick to my stainless steel cookware. Love that.
I prefer using my stainless steel and old cast iron pans. I do have 2 nonstick pans that I use sparingly. I will be looking to replace the nonstick ones soon. They’re only about a year old. The SS ones are over 10 years old and look&perform great.
HSN SOLD THE "GREEN PANS" BASED ON THE FACT THEY WERE CERAMIC COATED NON-STICK. A GOOD POINT, EXCEPT THAT THINGS STUCK SO BAD I RETURNED THE ONE PAN I BOUGHT. I SEE THEY ARE NOW GOING TO BE ON EVINE WITH TODD ENGLISH. MAYBE THEY FIGURE PPL HAVE SHORT MEMORIES. I’VE GOTTEN CERAMIC LINED PANS IN STORES WAY CHEAPER THAT WORKED PRETTY WELL, EXCEPT THAT THE CERAMIC COATING IS THINNER THAN A KLEENEX AND SCRAPED OFF – WELL, LET’S BE REAL – REAL PPL USE METAL UTENSILS. THEY HAD A LIFE OF 3-6 MOS. AND THEN I HAD TO PITCH THEM. SOME WERE BETTER THAN OTHERS, BEING MADE IN CHINA THERE WAS NO CONSISTENCY WITH QUALITY. BUYER BEWARE. I’VE GONE TO USING MORE STAINLESS.
Thanks for the info.
I think you are confusing PFOA and PTFE. PFOA is a chemical used in the manufacturing process in some nonsticks and is the process of being phased out. While it is toxic, it is not contained in the end product.
PTFE (basically, Teflon) is in many non-sticks. It can emit funes at higher temperatures which are toxic to small birds. Many manufa turers are switching to a ceramic nonstick instead, but the technology just is not there yet.
Personaly, I prefer high-quality stainless steel for most cooking and well-seasoned carbon steel skillets for things like eggs. Ths has nothing to due to with a fear of nonstick coatings (which many people have because of a lack of basic knowledge of high school chemistry) but because I find the performance superior.
