Conversation 24
Hello Peeps time for a new Conversation Thread. This is number 24 out of the
series. I created and started this thread 10 years ago.
I will change it often from now on. This is just a knock around
thread about things in life. My life and others. I am an avid Heidi
Daus Collector, former singer, model and so on. I do this thread because
I enjoy what I do. I love fashion and music and HSN is a little of both.
I cover a lot of music and fashion on this thread. ✨😎
I am going to wish Happy Holidays to all the Peeps out there and please
stay safe. 🌹✨😎

Club Tropicana
Song by Wham!Let me take you to the place where membership’s a smiling face
Brush shoulders with the stars
Where strangers take you by the hand
And welcome you to wonderland from beneath their panamas
Club Tropicana, drinks are free
Fun and sunshine, there’s enough for everyone
All that’s missing is the sea
But don’t worry, you can suntan
Castaways and lovers meet
Then kiss in Tropicana’s heat
Watch the waves break on the bay
Oh, soft white sands, a blue lagoon
Cocktail time, a summer’s tune
A whole night’s holiday
Club Tropicana, drinks are free
Fun and sunshine, there’s enough for everyone
All that’s missing is the sea
But don’t worry, you can suntan
Club Tropicana, drinks are free
Fun and sunshine, there’s enough for everyone
All that’s missing is the sea
But don’t worry, you can suntan
Pack your bags
And leave tonight
Don’t take your time
Gotta move your feet, don’t you miss the flight
Pack your bags
And leave tonight
Don’t take your time
Gotta move your feet, don’t you miss the flight
(Cool, cool)
(Cool, cool)

NATIONAL ZIPPER DAY
National Zipper Day commemorates April 29, 1913, when the patent for the modern zipper was issued. The day celebrates something we often do not think about and may automatically take for granted.
The first attempt at creating the zipper came from the inventor of the sewing machine. In 1851, Elias Howe received a patent for the “Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure.” However, Howe never marketed his invention and missed the recognition he may have received.
Forty-two years later, Whitcomb Judson began selling the “Clasp Locker.” Similar to Elias Howe’s patent, this device served as a more complicated hook-and-eye shoe fastener. Judson started the Universal Fastener Company, where he manufactured his new device and debuted it at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. There he met with very little success. However, Judson earned credit as its creator because he put his invention before the public for sale.
In 1906, the Universal Fastener Company hired Gideon Sundback, a Swedish-American electrical engineer. He was highly skilled and known for his devotion to the company. On April 29, 1913, he was granted a patent for the modern zipper, known then as the “Separable Fastener.” He submitted modifications to his invention in 1917. Today we wear designs quite similar to the ones Sundback created in his patent. While he may have called them a separable fastener, we know them as zippers.
By 1923, B.F. Goodrich popularized the word zipper as it applied to use in the boots and pouches it made. The company even copyrighted the name for a time.

NATIONAL SHRIMP SCAMPI DAY
National Shrimp Scampi Day on April 29th gives us a tasty way to celebrate. On this day, we honor the delicious dish of shrimp cooked with butter, garlic, lemon juice, and white wine.
Scampi is a culinary term for small lobster known as Nephrops (also known as langoustine or Dublin Bay Prawns) and which is completely unrelated to this day.
The day is wholly dedicated to the buttery, garlicky, lemony, and wine-sauced preparation of shrimp. Prepare the dish using fresh or frozen shrimp. When serving the dish, add a side of noodle or rice, steamed vegetables, and crusty bread or rolls. Shrimp scampi pairs well with white wine. Since the dish is light, a rich dessert of cheesecake or crème brûlée rounds out the meal.

NATIONAL PEACE ROSE DAY
Each year on April 29th, National Peace Rose Day honors a well-known and fruitful garden rose.
The light yellow to large cream-colored flowers of the Peace rose have slightly flushed crimson pink petal edges. It is a hybrid tea rose that is hardy, vigorous, and highly resistant to disease.
French horticulturist Francis Meilland developed the Peace rose between 1935 and 1939. When Meilland foresaw the German invasion of France to protect the new rose, he sent cutting to his friends in Italy, Turkey, Germany, and the United States. It is believed these cuttings were sent to the United States on the last plane available before the German invasion.
Each country that received a cutting gave the rose a different name. It was called “Madame A. Meilland” in honor of the breeder’s mother in France. Italy named the rose Gioia, meaning Joy. In Germany, the name of the rose was Gloria Dei, for glory to God. The United States named the rose “Peace,” and the national flower of the United States is the rose.
As the Second World War came to a close in Europe, the trade name “Peace” was publicly announced on April 29, 1945, by the Conrad Pyle Co. in the United States.
Later in 1945, Peace roses were given to each delegate at the inaugural meeting of the United Nations, in San Francisco, with a note that read: “We hope the Peace rose will influence men’s thoughts for everlasting world peace.”

NATIONAL SUPERHERO DAY
Have you ever been rescued from a risky situation or saved from injury or death? Those who come to our aid are called heroes. Some heroes happen to be in the right place at the right time. Others choose to be a hero as a career (though they wouldn’t call themselves heroes.) Other still are fictional creations that inspire us with hope. Each year on April 28th, National Superhero Day honors superheroes, both real and fictional.
Batman, Superman, Captain America, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, Hulk, and Spiderman are just some of the superheroes whose names we recognize. Even though they are fictional, these superheroes provide role models for our children. They serve and protect while fighting evil.
Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary. ~ Gerard Way
Our real-life superheroes may not have superpowers or wear capes. However, just like fictional superheroes, children also look up to them as role models. They serve and protect their communities. These real-life superheroes also dedicate their lives to helping others, saving lives, or being a mentor. Military personnel, police officers, firefighters, and teachers are just a few of the heroes who protect us on a daily basis.

NATIONAL BRAVEHEARTS DAY
Each year on April 28, we celebrate National BraveHearts Day to honor the bravery of families dealing with pediatric cancer. During this time, pay tribute and support the families and friends of those involved in the child’s life.
Navigating through cancer is hard and often scary. Families who have children with cancer need a good support system, but don’t know where to turn. However, there is hope for families struggling with pediatric cancer through a cell phone app called Spotlight Hope. This free app provides information on local resources, financial help, and transportation. In addition, Spotlight Hope provides a connection to other families who are also experiencing a similar situation. Most importantly, Spotlight Hope is designed to help navigate pediatric cancer by finding people who they can rely on for help.

GLOBAL PAY IT FORWARD DAY
Every year on April 28th, Global Pay It Forward Day encourages people around the world to engage in a small act of kindness. It’s a day to respond to someone’s kindness toward you by being kind to someone else.
Has someone ever done something nice for you when you least expected it? Maybe they bought you a small gift. Or they gave you a hug just because. There is a good chance that when someone extended kindness, it made you happy. The act may have made you cry tears of joy. This is what kindness does. And this is why the world needs more of it. When people are kind, it makes you want to be kind in return. Can you imagine if everyone in the world was kind to one another all of the time? Maybe this seems impossible, but it doesn’t mean you can’t try to show more kindness to others.
If someone has recently done something kind for you, why not pay it forward? Do something kind for someone else in return. If you’re not sure how you can pay it forward, here are some great ideas:
Buy the coffee or meal for the person behind you in line (a great place to do this is the drive-thru).
Pay a compliment to at least three people you see.
Send a positive text message or gif to five people on your contact list.
Send a friend a bouquet of flowers or a box of chocolates.
Offer free babysitting or dog walking for a friend or family member.
Donate to a charitable organization.
Buy a neighbor in need a gift card to a grocery or department store.
There are many, many ways to pay it forward. The key is to extend kindness to someone who least expects it! -
NATIONAL PET PARENTS DAY
On the last Sunday in April, National Pet Parents Day recognizes the pet parents who go the extra mile to care for their fur babies.
There is a very special connection, a unique bond, between a pet and its owner. This unique relationship, which can often last for many years, is often a vital part of the ‘pet parents’ life. Their loved pets are considered to be a member of the family.
Some pet parents are new to the experience. Others are repeat performers. No matter how many pets or how often they engage in the relationship, it’s a special one every time.
The observance was created to honor all dedicated pet parents across the nation with a special day of their own.

NATIONAL BLUEBERRY PIE DAY
National Blueberry Pie Day on April 28th each year ushers in blueberry pie-making season. Blueberry harvest begins in April and lasts until September giving us a long season full of blueberry enjoyment.
We’ve been enjoying blueberries in pies since early American settlers arrived. In 1872, the first documented recipe for blueberry pie appeared in the Appledore Cook Book. Blueberries are abundant in Maine, so it’s no surprise that blueberry pie is the state’s official dessert!
This once wild berry became domesticated during the early 1900s thanks to the observations of Elizabeth Coleman White and the research of Dr. Frederick V. Coville. Before their efforts, wild blueberries were never successfully transplanted and raised in any farming operation for personal or commercial production. The only way to enjoy fresh blueberries was to seek them out where they grew naturally.
Through the efforts of White and Coville, today, producers and private gardeners bring to fruition these amazingly delicious berries. These vibrant berries pack a punch in vitamins and health benefits from farm to table or farmer to the grocer to you. They make a great snack all on their own or enhance a meal, and make stellar desserts or sauces. Whatever this berry does, it does with panache!
It’s one of the healthiest fruits on the market, too. Full of antioxidants, this nutrient berry helps inhibit cancer development and helps prevent urinary tract disease. Eating blueberries may assist in maintaining healthy blood pressure, reduce blood sugar, and ease symptoms of depression.

NATIONAL GREAT POETRY READING DAY
At the tail end of National Poetry Month, April 28th marks the observance of National Great Poetry Reading Day. This day celebrates distinguished poetry and the notable poets who wrote them.
As an art form, poetry may predate literacy. Epic poetry appears to have been composed in poetic form to aid memorization and oral transmission in prehistoric and ancient societies. It is directly from folk songs that other types of poetry developed.
When isNational Poem In Your Pocket Day?
With so many forms of poetry to choose from, no one is limited. For example, choose from the sonnet, shi, villanelle, tanka, haiku, ode, and ghazal. There are also different genres of poetry including narrative, epic, dramatic, satirical, lyric, elegy, verse fable, prose, and speculative poetry.
Some of the well-known, great poets include William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Robert Frost, Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, and T.S. Eliot.

Good afternoon in your corner of the world wishing you a great week. 😎🎈😘
-
Good afternoon in Florida and may this Sunday find you and hubby doing well. 😎
Oz has had a lot of rain this past weekend we needed it. 😎 It’s not over just yet.
-
Good afternoon on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Oodie I took your advice and did very
little yesterday I was a bit under the weather anyway. I do miss my father. We had strong storms last night on the local telly all they showed was where it was going
to hit I finally turned the Telly off. I could see and hear all the noise. My concerns were
the cats they do not like rain or water. Hubby and I are on the look out for them today.I am sorry you have not heard from your husband’s room mate. This is concerning I hope
and pray he is alright. I know your husband wants to come home now.Oodie I see your hands are full with the Van and then some.
I like how you keep it all in stride. Hey Clean Boss is on sale with free shipping.
I hope you have time for you today and enjoy this special week.
-
Hope you are feeling better. I forgot to mention to leave your porch door opened so that the kitties could come and go. Then again, maybe not a good idea when you have some others vying for the same things. You could also leave food in the shed for them. I wouldn’t be surprised if they hung out all night during the storms. I saw the devastation from yesterday. Horrible.
I did see hubby last night. I stopped at Culvers and picked up their custard and hot fudge for both of us. I also ordered their cranberry salad and I was totally impressed. Hubby was in the wheelchair when I arrived. He was wearing a leg brace on the bad knee and it gave him the support without the pain. For the first time he was totally relaxed and was able to put both legs up on to the bed (like an ottoman). I was impressed. I think he will be able to manage as if nothing is wrong. He did try to get into bed himself when the A/C came on like winter. I also found out that his roommate is in the hospital for tests to see what he has. Most think it is a virus and it could be. If so, I am definitely concerned with hubby and I will be watching closely.
I received Wolfgang’s mixing bowls and I must say I am impressed. I wonder if it can slice into an apple. I will be making a trip either tomorrow or Tuesday to the Farmer’s Market. It would be so easy to bring a couple of apples with me and slice them or do whatever so he can swallow the cut up pieces without choking. Apples have a tendency to turn brown, so if I have everything with me, he will enjoy the freshness and the juice. If this works, I will be looking at other fruit as well. And yes, I hope to meet with the speech therapist sometime this week.
It’s that time again. I need to make something for my dinner and at the same time see if there is something hubby can enjoy. I have fish in the freezer that is calling my name along with baked potatoes.
Our weather is partly cloudy with wind. Some bigger gusts expected this afternoon. Temp is in the low 80s and tonight will be from the low to mid 60s. The humidity is low, so there will be no rain, though who knows what the rest of the week will bring.
Take care you three. Stay safe.
-
Oodie, Hope you get a chance to try your SB backpack out before the 30 days are up. The potatoes sound good for dinner.
-
Good evening I have found at least one of the cats the main one I wanted. This cat
is so nervous even after the thunderstorm I fed him real good. I never seen him eat
like that. I stocked up on healthy foods for him and the rest.I feel like the commercial where a woman thinks a racoon is a cat. You can bet I would
have a zoo in my house. I think I know where they are taking shelter and it is good.I hope your day went well. We keep checking sump pump to make sure water is going
out. The weekend was not boring hardly ever is as there is always something to do.The night is quiet in OZ. ✨🌹I think now mother nature can get back to normal.
-
Good morning in S. California and welcome back. 😎😘🎈I hope you had a nice
time Utah. 💕Taci sorry you did not receive the bangles but at least you got your money back.
I am very surprised that happened. Oodie is right there is a 40% Sale and I believe
the last day is today.Hey get some rest and relax from your getaway. 😎 I was hoping SB Bag would work
for you. The color you see posted on the JM TS is the color of my set from her.I am feeling a lot better today I had something and it has went away. 😎
I am going to do a little gardening if the weather holds up.
Happy Trails To You. 🎶🎶
-
Sheba, glad you are feeling better. It’s ok about the bangles as I also purchased a pair of earrings and bracelet that did arrive. I think someone intercepted some of those HD packages along the way. We were in just about every weather weather condition on our road trip. We have all been tired since getting back home. How did the cats do with the rain storms?
-
Good afternoon in the ‘burgh. 😘🎈😎 I hope you are resting and your mother is having
a wonderful birthday weekend. 😎🎈I may plant a couple of flowers weather permitting. 😎
Just enjoy this day I would love to hear how your mother’s day is going. Please give her a birthday wish
from me. 😎Sending loving hugs to you and Jake. 😘💕

Shoelady, Wishing your Mother a very Happy Birthday! 🍰
-
Happy Sunday to you! I did see on the news the bad weather in the mid-west and hope all is upright in your area.😫
Very nice dinner with mom yesterday. As usual, too much food. Mom surprised me, she normally gets cheesecake for dessert but decided on a pecan ball. It was as big as a basketball so we all shared it.🏀😲 Took the strawberry cheesecake home.🍰 I sent a quiet toast to your dad in heaven.🙏
It is very warm in the ‘burgh, mid 80’s and tomorrow we may break a record with 88. Too early for this August weather.🔥 We broke a record for rain this April so everywhere is just crazy.
Hope you see the kitties tonight and all is well.🐈 Love and hugs to you and Poppy.🤗💖
-
Thank you for the prayers for my dad. 🌹🌹I really appreciate the prayers.
I am so glad you had a great birthday celebration with your mom. I love her
choice for dessert and I have a feeling that Cherry Cheesecake is not going to
waste. LOL!The kitties are coming for food and I am so glad I saw them in the security camera. ✨✨
The night is quiet and think the animals need this to remain calm.

NATIONAL PRIME RIB DAY
National Prime Rib Day annually recognizes this special meal favorite on April 27th each year. Sometimes known as the “King of Meats,” Prime Rib is a choice cut from one of the eight prime cuts of beef.
A rubbed-on seasoned and then slow-roasted prime rib will give you a deliciously tender, tasty main course. Find many recipes and helpful “how to cook prime rib” guides on the internet for all to use. Some of the most common seasons used include garlic, salt, pepper, rosemary, onion, oregano, and thyme.
Depending on your preference, you might choose to serve your prime rib with fresh vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, or Brussel sprouts. A variety of potatoes complement prime rib, too. Whether you like mashed, baked, or roasted potatoes, they will pair well with this hearty meal. Add a light salad or pasta dish, too. Don’t forget to serve your favorite wine or beer. Your guests will appreciate it.
Finish off the meal with a fruit-topped dessert. It’s definitely a meal worthy of a celebration!

NATIONAL GUMMI BEAR DAY
Gummi bears are a sweet treat that brings joy to people of all ages. On April 27, let’s celebrate National Gummi Bear Day and the memorable treat of childhood that’s timelessly fun.
Few treats are as cute and sweet as gummi bears. Fruity and fun, these colorful chews have been charming us since 1922. That’s right, the gummi bear is 100 years old! HARIBO® founder Hans Riegel started the company in 1920 from his home kitchen. Two years later he created the world’s first gummi bear. Today, they’re known as Goldbears® are an iconic treat all over the world.
While chewing on that bit of information, remember gummi bears are also the perfect treat to share. The bite-sized pieces mean everyone can join the fun and celebrate National Gummi Bear Day together!
A CHEWY CELEBRATION

NATIONAL BABE RUTH DAY
On April 27, baseball fans worldwide honor one of baseball’s all-time greatest players on National Babe Ruth Day.
George Herman “Babe” Ruth, Jr., born on February 6, 1895, in Baltimore, Maryland, was nicknamed “the Bambino” and “the Sultan of Swat.” Spending 22 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), he played for three teams from 1914 to 1935.
Babe Ruth’s baseball career started as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. He became a full-time right-fielder when the New York Yankees bought his contract in 1919. Being one of the league’s most prolific hitters, he helped the Yankees win seven pennants and four World Series titles.
Ruth set career records during his career for home runs, slugging percentage, runs batted in, and on-base plus slugging. In 1927, he was the very first player to hit 60 home runs in one season.
Following a short stint with the Boston Braves, Ruth retired in 1935.In 1936, the National Baseball Hall of Fame elected Ruth as one of the first five players to be inducted into the Hall.
In 1946, after experiencing severe eye pain and difficulty swallowing, Babe Ruth was diagnosed with cancer. A year later on April 27, Ruth attended the newly proclaimed Babe Ruth Day and spoke briefly to a crowd of almost 60,000 people at Yankee Stadium.
At the age of 53, on August 16, 1948, at 8:01 pm, Babe Ruth died in his sleep.

Good Afternoon and may this be a good day for you. Oodie I am so glad you have your
Van at last. 🎈😎Enjoy the Markets and Shopping. I hope your husband’s room mate is alright.
I am not feeling too hot today and I know this too will pass. 😎
-
Have van will not travel…….I need to make an appointment for the usual maintenance. Just not sure at the moment where I will go and will discuss this with hubby when I see him later.
Today I am playing “Mrs.Fixit.” For some reason the disposal isn’t working and I have a feeling that it may be unplugged. If that’s the case, I save someone from coming out and if not, so be it.
As I mentioned yesterday, I have no idea where hubby’s roommate is. I surmise that between the time I left and the time hubby got up for breakfast that he may have gone to the hospital. I know the nurses and aides have an idea where he is and what the circumstances are. They just are keeping quiet. I am concerned and have a feeling that it could be life threatening. I am also disturbed on how they are treating my hubby. He has asked for an apple everyday this week. I was told not to bring it because he has problems swallowing. His problem may be swallowing, but it is also due to large bites and swallowing before completing the chewing process. He thinks he can gulp it down in one gulp. I will purchase an apple next time I’m at the market, but I will also meet with the speech therapist to see if there could be an alternative rather than pureeing the apple.
I hope you are safe and feeling better. Please take it easy today and do nothing.
-
Oodie, Hello. Glad you have the Van. Well, yes, you know I have checked over there and saw the 40% but I really don’t need anything. If I see something once in a while then I will splurge.
Glad your bag is working out for you. Agree, lightweight is the way to go. Once you try the backpack you will understand. After filling the pockets my makeup pouch wouldn’t even fit in the center.
Otherwise, it’s a pretty backpack. Let me know what you think once you use it.
Hope your husband gets home soon. I know you are working on it. -
Good Morning in S. California I hope you are enjoying your time away from things. 😎
Oz is alright today we still have some storms again heading this way.Enjoy the trails where ever you go.
-
Sheba, a big hello. Read some older posts. Sorry about your procedure and I am so happy that you are doing well! Hope the weather clears up so you and Poppy can go for a walk. We were on a Utah Road trip and came back early since our vehicle experienced some issues after being on a crazy washboard road. Well, my bracelets never arrived and HD refunded me (and probably a few others). The Samantha Brown Backpack that I bought didn’t work out and doesn’t hold much. Had to buy a replacement while on the road. Now I am all set.
Hope you have a good weekend. -
Sorry to hear that you didn’t receive the bracelets. She has another deal online if you wish to check. I haven’t tried SB’s backpack. Sorry to hear it didn’t work out. I am using the hobo bag and love it. More than enough room for all my junk.😀😀😎😀🏜🏝 Best of all, it is lightweight.
The deal for HD is 40% off on everything.

To My Father In Heaven Happy Birthday.
Papa, Can You Hear Me?
SongGod – our heavenly Father
Oh God – and my father
Who is also in heaven
May the light
Of this flickering candle
Illuminates the night the way
Your spirit illuminates my soul
Papa, can you hear me?
Papa, can you see me?
Papa, can you find me in the night?
Papa, are you near me?
Papa, can you hear me?
Papa, can you help me not be
Frightened?
Looking at the skies
I seem to see a million eyes
Which ones are yours?
Where are you now that yersterday
Has waved goodbye
And closed its doors?
The night is so much darker.
The wind is so much colder
The world I see is so much bigger
Now that I’m alone
Papa, please forgive me
Try to understand me
Papa, don’t you know I had no choice?
Can you hear me praying
Anything I’m saying
Even though the night is filled
With voices?
I remember ev’rything you thaught me
Every book I’ve ever read
Can all the words in all the books
Help me to face what lies ahead?
The trees are so much taller
And I feel so much smaller

NATIONAL KIDS AND PETS DAY
National Kids and Pets Day on April 26th raises awareness of the importance of picking the right pet for children at the right time. It’s an important decision that can lead to a lifetime of bonding between pet and child.
The day also celebrates the bonds children and pets can share and a day to remember safety where our pets and children are concerned. There are many benefits of having a pet in a child’s life. From fostering natural nurturing abilities to developing responsibilities, pets have a lifelong impact on a child’s development.
It is also important to remember that small children as well as the pets may not know their limitations and should not be left alone with each other. They should always be supervised to prevent injury to both the child and the animal.
Even though dogs and cats are some of the most beloved pets in the United States, pet homelessness is a huge problem in the country. There are about 70 million stray animals in the United States. Up to 8 million of these animals end up in shelters. There are 3,500 animal shelters in the country. It’s at these animal shelters that pets receive a second chance. According to the ASPCA, over 3 million shelter animals are adopted each year.
No matter the breed, size, or demeanor of the human, or, canine, the shelter will take the time to find the right home for their animals. They schedule visits and have procedures in place to promote healthy adoptions for families and individuals. While some dogs have experienced injury or illness, the shelters work with veterinarians to heal the animals before making them available for adoption.

NATIONAL PRETZEL DAY
National Pretzel Day on April 26th recognizes one of America’s favorite snacks. A bag of nice crunchy, salty pretzels or a big, warm, soft, cinnamon pretzel is the question of the day. Either one is an excellent choice.
There are a few different accounts of the origin of the pretzel. Most people agree that it does have a Christian background, and they were developed by the monks. According to The History of Science and Technology, in 610 AD, “an Italian monk invents pretzels as a reward to children who learn their prayers. He calls the strips of baked dough, folded to resemble arms crossing the chest, pretiola (little rewards).”
Another source puts the invention in a monastery in southern France. The looped pretzel may also be related to a Greek Ring bread from the communion bread used in monasteries a thousand years ago. In the Catholic Church, pretzels had a religious significance for both ingredients and shape. The loops in pretzels may have served a practical purpose; bakers could hang them on sticks, projecting upwards from a central column, as shown in Job Berckheyde’s (1681) painting.
The Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants introduced pretzels to North America in the 19th century. At this time, many handmade pretzel bakeries populated central Pennsylvania, and their popularity quickly spread. In the 20th century, soft pretzels became very popular in areas such as Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York.
More Pretzel Facts
Today, the average Philadelphian consumes about twelve times as many pretzels as the national average.
Pennsylvania is the center of American pretzel production for both hard and soft pretzels, producing 80% of the nation’s pretzels.
The annual United States pretzel industry is worth over $550 million.
The average American consumes about 1.5 pounds of pretzels per year.
Philadelphia opened a privately run “Pretzel Museum” in 1993.
Hard pretzels originated in the United States in 1850. -
NATIONAL DISSERTATION DAY
National Dissertation Day on April 26th creates an annual reminder to continuing education students to maintain their focus and complete the pinnacle of their education.
The first doctoral degree was awarded in Paris in the mid-12th century. The doctorate of philosophy was conceived in Germany some 500 years later and is the direct precursor to the modern Ph.D. Today, universities in the U.S. award multiple research-based doctoral degrees. Many of those degrees are specific to a discipline of study. For example, the D.B.A (business), Ed.D. (education), D.N.P. (nursing), and Psy.D. (psychology) are all quite popular among professionals in industry, business, and private practice as opposed to traditional academia.
However, one thing these degree programs all have in common is the doctoral dissertation. Born of the master-apprentice relationship of the medieval trade guilds, the dissertation is the masterpiece of the doctoral process. To graduate, every doctoral student must complete an independent research project and write a dissertation – a book-length paper detailing every aspect of the project.
Each year in the U.S., over 50,000 people earn their doctoral degrees, successfully completing the grueling dissertation process. However, only about 50% of those who enroll in doctoral programs ever graduate. Meanwhile, that leaves another 50,000 students each year who withdraw from their doctoral programs without finishing their dissertations.
Tuition for most doctoral programs across the country exceeds $20,000 per year and can be significantly higher. Students spend 5-7 years pursuing their doctoral degrees, and often much more. Additionally, the money spent on tuition pales in comparison to the costs associated with postponing the increased earning potential enjoyed by doctoral graduates. Individuals with their doctoral degrees typically earn at least $20,000 more per year than those with their master’s degree.

NATIONAL AUDUBON DAY
On April 26th each year, National Audubon Day honors the birth of John James Audubon (April 26, 1785 – January 27, 1851).
Audubon was a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter noted for his extensive studies of American birds and his detailed illustrations of the birds in their natural habitats. Audubon’s greatest work wasThe Birds of America which is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. His work in this book contains more than 700 North American bird species with 435 hand-colored, life-size prints of 497 bird species.
Spring is an excellent time to observe the birds John Audubon described and painted. As they migrate across the country, set out feeders to welcome them along their journey. Watch them from your window or while strolling on a path.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, at last count approximately 45 million people watch birds. They bird watch while they travel or all year long from their homes. Many trek around the country to see a bird for the first time in its natural habitat. So can you. Learn about their habitats and migration patterns. Or simply watch them for their color and song.

Getting ready to get the van. I wanted to pop in to say please stay safe. I just saw your weather alerts and hope you three are OK. The larger storms will mostly occur overnight. Guess you will have one ear on a pillow and the other to listen for storm control. Hope all kitties are safe.

Finally, after who knows how many months, van is here. The color is different, and, I must admit, I like it. It took over three hours to get the ride from Uber. Each time I phoned the Service Department, they would say the car would be here in five minutes. This is the last time I will ever use this dealership.
Did visit hubby. I was surprised to see that his roommate was nowhere to be seen. I assume he is in the hospital. Hubby said he had no idea he had left the room. I surmise that they had closed the curtains so that he couldn’t see him leave. When I asked where he was, no one seemed to know. His personal items were still in the room and his bed was made as if he would be returning. Very sad.

Empowered Forgiveness
If we can remember that our response to others is important, we can begin to realize that honesty and forgiveness go hand in hand.
In life, there will always be times when we are negatively affected by the actions of another person. When this happens, we often receive an apology. More often than not, we say, “It’s all right,” or “ It’s okay.” By saying this, we are allowing, accepting, and giving permission for the behavior to happen again. When we say “thank you,” or “I accept your apology,” we are forced to sit in our feelings rather than ignore them.
There are many of us who feel that it is easier to brush off how we really feel than to express our discomfort with something that has happened to us. While this may initially seem like the best thing to do, what it does is put us into an unending pattern of behavior. Since we are not honest with another person, we continue the cycle of letting them overstep our emotional limits time and time again. By doing this, we place ourselves in the position of victim. We can put an end to this karmic chain by first acknowledging to the other person that we accept their request for forgiveness; often a simple “thank you” is enough. To truly create a greater sense of harmony in our relationship, however, we need to gently, and with compassion, express our innermost concerns about what has transpired. By taking a deep breath and calling upon the deepest parts of our spirit, we can usually find the right words to let the other person know the consequences of what they have done.
If we can remember that our response to others is important, we can begin to realize that trust and forgiveness go hand in hand. And when we react in a way that engenders a greater amount of honesty and candor, we will establish a more positive and empowering way of being and interacting with others.

NATIONAL TAKE OUR DAUGHTERS AND SONS TO WORK DAY
Each year on the fourth Thursday in April, National Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day encourages parents to take their children to work.
This annual event is an educational program in the United States and Canada where parents take their children to work with them for one day. The day is designed to help children explore the workforce. It inspires children to see the different roles required to run a business or to build a project. They may find an interest in engineering, accounting, or art while spending the day with mom or day. Perhaps a child’s natural proclivity for order leads them into logistics someday.
Children are observant and curious. Bring them into your work world so they can explore careers and skills. Empower them to set goals and create a path to their dream career.

NATIONAL TELEPHONE DAY
On April 25th, we observe National Telephone Day. Around the world, there are 9.82 billion mobile phones. And while some predicted the landline to be obsolete by 2020, there are still about 931 million landlines around the world.
Obtaining a Patent
The correct answer to a trivia question like “Who invented the telephone?” is the name on the patent. In this case, the whole world knows the answer is Alexander Graham Bell. Had his attorney been delayed by foul weather or poor planning, the answer may be a different name.
On February 14, 1876, Marcellus Bailey, one of Bell’s attorneys, rushed into the U.S. Patent office in Boston to file the patent for what would be the telephone.
Later the same day, Elisha Gray filed a patent caveat for a similar device. A caveat is an intent to file for a patent.
There was also a third contender. Antonio Meucci filed a caveat in November of 1871 for a talking telegraph but failed to renew the caveat due to hardships.
Because Bell submitted his record first, the patent office awarded Bell the patent on March 7, 1876. Gray contested this decision in court, but without success.
Alexander Graham Bell
Born March 3, 1847, in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, Bell taught at a boys’ boarding school. The sounds of speech were an integral part of his life. His father developed a “Visible Speech” system for deaf students to communicate. Bell would later become a friend and benefactor of Helen Keller.
Three days after the patent was approved, Bell spoke the first words by telephone to his assistant. “Mr. Watson, come here! I want to see you!”
By May, Bell and his team stood prepared for a public demonstration. And there would be no better place than the grand stage of the World’s Fair in Philadelphia. On May 10, 1876, in a crowded Machinery Hall, a man’s voice transmitted from a small horn and carried out through a speaker to the audience.
One year later, the White House installed its first phone. The telephone revolution began.
Bell Telephone Company was founded on July 9, 1877, and they installed the first public telephone lines from Boston to Sommerville, Massachusetts, the same year. By the end of the decade, nearly 50,000 phones existed in the United States. In May of 1967, phone companies across the country installed the 100 millionth telephone line.

NATIONAL TEACH CHILDREN TO SAVE DAY
Each year on the fourth Thursday in April, National Teach Children to Save Day encourages children to develop good saving habits.
Bankers across the country volunteer every year to teach children to save. Developing these habits at a young age creates a foundation for a lifetime of saving. Involving our children with a savings plan, and money management skills prepare them for a solid future. Parents should teach children about financial matters so that when they head out into the world they avoid pitfalls that can be financially devastating. With an early start on saving and an understanding of budgeting their money, children will have solid habits as they head into adulthood.
The day offers tools and resources through events across the country.

NATIONAL ZUCCHINI BREAD DAY
Each year on April 25th each year, National Zucchini Bread Day encourages bakers to make this delicious bread.
Many explorers who came to the Americas brought back what they considered strange foods, including the zucchini. The zucchini eventually found its way to Italy, where it was named zucchino. Native Americans referred to zucchini as “something eaten raw.” However, we all know that zucchini tastes best cooked, especially in bread.
Zucchini bread is similar to other quick breads like banana bread. Other quick breads you might be familiar with making include muffins, scones, and biscuits. When baked, Zucchini and banana bread go into the oven in loaf pans. When finished, slice and serve with butter, peanut butter, jam, or just plain.
Basic Ingredients of a Quick Bread
Fat – Bakers use shortening, butter, margarine, or vegetable oils depending on the texture they wish to achieve. Follow recipes and use only the fat called for to achieve the desired results.
Sugar – Granular sugar, brown sugar, and some sugar substitutes are used. Many bakers add fruit for sweetness, substituting a portion of the sugar in the recipe.
Eggs – As an emulsifier and a binding ingredient, eggs add volume and texture to quick bread
Flour – Most bakers use all-purpose flour, but other recipes will use alternative flours. Always follow the recipe because other ingredients have been adjusted to improve texture when using an alternative flour.
Liquid – Usually, milk or water moisten the mixture, activate the gluten in the flour, and dissolve the sugar.
Leavening agent – Either baking powder or baking soda + an acid (such as cream of tartar) are used. Baking powder is baking soda with the acid already added.
Flavoring ingredient – Bakers incorporate a variety of spices, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and extracts. Each one complements the flavor of the main ingredient. In a quick bread, bakers often use vanilla to enhance the flavor.
When mixing your ingredients, be sure to follow the recipe instructions. Over mixing prevents the bread from rising while baking causing the bread to be dense. -
NATIONAL DNA DAY
On April 25th, people across the nation recognize National DNA Day. On this day in 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick formally announced their discovery of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in a short letter published in the science journal, Nature.
Fast forward to 1990, when scientists from around the world came together to begin mapping the human genome. Known as The Human Genome Project, approximately 2000 scientists in six countries set to work mapping the nucleotides in human DNA. In the process, the project learned that humans share genes with other species. Some of the species the project mapped included yeast, mice, and the fruit fly – all species commonly studied in science already.
The genome is our map of life. ~ President William Clinton
Quote mark
On June 26, 2000, the first draft of the human genome was released. By April of 2003, the project released 92% of the mapped human genome. The Telomere-to-Telomere (T2T) Consortium took on the challenge of sequencing the final 8% of the human genome. On March 31, 2022, they published six letters detailing the completion of the final 8% in the journal Science.
The mapping of the human genome has transformed medicine and research. The ENCODE (Encyclopedia of DNA Elements) Project launched soon after the human genome was sequenced to study further and catalog data related to the human genome. Research including the study of different cancers and more advanced diagnostic tests may change medicine forever.

Thinking of Xango and hoping she and her family are well. Oodie you just never know.

I enjoyed watching HD while visiting hubby. Used the Kindle and he asked, “so what did you buy?”
At the time nothing, but then I decided on the zebra cuff.Would you believe I am still waiting on the van. I contacted the dealership yesterday afternoon and they were waiting for a phone call from the head of Collision before they do the maintenance. I now wonder if they lost our vehicle. I have a few appointments today, but if I have a few minutes may drive over there. However hubby had a good idea. Pick him up at Rehab and drive over there together. Best idea yet. He wants to know and see what is going on. I am working on that angle as I type.
Hubby’s roommate seems to be coming around. Not sure if he has cancer or a virus or both. He is moving around a lot better and last night tried to get out of bed. I told him to hold it and I would ring for help. He listened. His coughing has also started to subside. Thanks in a sense to the illness, he hasn’t been able to smoke in almost two weeks. I sincerely hope he continues not to indulge. I just wish he had visitors.
The moon was in the East as I drove home last night. Nice and bright. Well, need to get a move on. Have a great day and enjoy the rain. If you have a chance, try to send some our way.
-
Good evening and drive safe going home I know you do but I like saying it. 😘
Oz is having hard rain and wind I am worried about the lines falling.I let Poppy go to his emergency spot in the back of the yard there is no grass there and it

problem. I am trying to feed the outdoors cats they do not like to get wet. I want to have
a full meal so they can get through the night. I have a security camera and I can see everything
around my house so I know when they are there. We just need to get through the next
72 hours and we can relax a bit rain all week but not as strong. Hey April Showers bring
May Flowers. 🎈😎Glad your husband room mate is doing a bit better I wish he had visitors too. Everybody
needs someone in times like this. My heart goes out to him.Oodie I hope they find your Van it must be a nice one. I wish your husband could ride
