NATIONAL BAKED ALASKA DAY
Ice cream and cake come together on February 1st in a celebration called National Baked Alaska Day.
An elaborate dessert that is also known as “Omelette Norvegienne,” Baked Alaska is made with hard ice cream on a base of sponge cake and covered in a shell of toasted meringue.
In the United States in 1867, an earnest debate erupted over the potential purchase of Alaska from Russia. Secretary of State William Seward agreed to a purchase price of $7 million, and Alaska became a United States territory in 1868. Those of the opinion that the purchase was a giant mistake referred to the purchase as “Seward’s Folly.”
Enter Charles Ranhofer, the chef at Delmonico’s Restaurant in New York City. He was notorious for naming new and renaming old dishes after famous people and events. Capitalizing on the heated controversy surrounding the purchase in the frozen north, Baked Alaska fit the bill. It was cold, nearly frozen, and quickly toasted in a hot oven before serving.
He served as the chef at Delmonico’s from 1862 to 1896. During his tenure, he also created Lobster Newburg, another famous dish honored with a national food holiday.

Hi. Arrived home after 11pm last night. Too late to post and also too tired. Didn’t shop yesterday. Instead arrived to see hubby earlier due to weather. Our favorite aide was back and hopefully whatever bug he had, I hope is long gone. Had a long chat with the on duty RN just before leaving. She feels hubby would do better in Assisted Living. I tend to agree to a certain extent. He would definitely get the help he needs and I can still prepare his meals. They would help him to go from bed to wheelchair, etc.. What I do not like is the cost and the size of the apartment. I would really need to downsize. No closet space and laundry is either shared or you have the facility do it. The amenities are OK like you have a choice of either eating in a dining room or your apartment. TV for the most part would be in a community room rather than your apartment since you would be essentially in a 350 sq.ft home to 500sq.ft.. It also will depend upon what you choose since there are many Assisted Living places in Florida. It is something to think about, however, I definitely will have help in our home as needed. My only concern is getting hubby from bed to chair and vice versa. This will also be more of a concern when traveling, thought I am finding things that may help with daily activities. I now know there are wheelchairs specifically for showers and also one that fits over a toilet. His mind is also better. The short term memory loss is becoming less and less. The only thing he seems to forget is that he cannot stand or walk. The rehab seems to be forgetful on their part, however, there is an outpatient rehab that may be the answer when hubs is home. For now, home is the better answer and as problems arise so will there be answers. I think for now, home is the best
alternative and less of a deterrentI think I finally figured out what happened to the top of the stove. It may have been the pan the turkey was in was too hot for the top and probably too heavy since the turkey was still in the pan. I definitely will be more cautious especially when turkey season rolls around. And, I love your idea of the noodle. Yes, it has many uses and it will certainly come in handy.
Weather is changing in Florida. The temp is now beginning to rise a bit. It’s in the mid 50s as I type and when I can finally get out, 60s sounds very promising. Tonight’s temp will again be in the mid 40s, but that will change either tomorrow or Monday with the highs in the 10w 70s and nights in the low to mid 50s. No rain in sight this week, though that could change. I’m not going to say we are now out of the woods for low temps.. We still have the month of February to go through and the first couple of weeks in March. Anything can happen.
Enjoy your warmer days. Stay safe when walking at night. The temps still have a tendency to do funny things, especially when the temps drop. Tread carefully. You may have to tell Poppy to slow down. Have a great day and then some.
I am hoping and praying that your SIL will get some good news for a change. She needs to smile more and frown less. There are a lot more therapies today for pancreatic cancer. More so now than when Justice Ginsberg was around. She will have many ups and downs during the treatment, but as the medication begins to work, many things could happen all at once. Never lose hope. Keep the smile and energy going and most of all to never lose hope.

Good evening so sorry about your stove top. Oodie I have one black on top and stainless
steel. I have the new over the range microwave above it that is the one hubby installed
last month and I love it. Oodie I am going to try to find a picture of what I have on top
of my Stove. This may or may not help you but it can create more room for you to work with.I bake a lot and I use a slow cooker for most of my meals. I only use the microwave for heating
and melting. 💕This is what I have in a different color you can find this in the usual stores.
This is called a Noodle Board Stove Cover. I use this when the stove is not being used.
I can still make coffee and toast and put it on the cover. Also they have handles that you
can lift the cover off place on something solid and cook a meal when finish just clean
and place back on the stove if you look for it this does many things and they have different
colors I have the Oak.This is how mine look and I can serve tea or coffee. Many fun ways to use.
Oodie you can take this in the lanai and serve tea and treats. So many things can be done
and then place back on the stove if not in use. 😎This should warm you up be careful on those stairs and layer up as always with the cold.

I just made it home. It is very windy in Florida and it’s chilly. Very chilly. I was able to make it to Aldi’s in pouring rain.. Temp was 59. I did purchase what I needed and loaded the car and went directly to see hubby. Yes, I was able to make it down the three steps. Yippee!!!!!!
There is a huge mat on the side of hubby’s bed. Very nice and it’s foam. I did make a phone call and left a message with the Social Worker that hubby has not been falling out of bed. Rather he needs to use the bathroom or to go into the closet for something warm. He has a buzzer, but for some reason he refuses to use it. I do make a phone call when I cannot make it and let it be known why. However, it seems that those messages go on deaf ears. Hopefully, now, the situation has changed.
Yes, Florida is seeing snow. Most of it is falling in the Pan handle. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if xango sees those snowflakes. The wind that I mentioned above, makes the temp feel like 25-30. However, the computer is saying 45. Go figure. !!!
Hope you are bundled up. The heat is on at our home. Felt really good when I entered. Have a good evening. Good night to you, the kitties, your hubby and Poppy.

I just posted about this also.. I don’t watch too much because of the Hosts..Have Callie do training classes on how to Host..
They talk to fast, talk over the vendor and do the high pressure sales and try to act like models (Sarah and Val). Customers are smarter than this and Upper Management needs to be aware and make some changes..- SHARON818

Posted in Forum: Customer ServiceI had a package sent from HSN that got to my state and then was RETURNED TO SENDER because HSN had sent it thru their contract with SurePost. I would not have known if I hadn’t checked status. Status showed “Service Disruption – returned to sender”. I called UPS and found this out. Then I called HSN and the supervisor my CSR asked said they had not heard anything about this. I am p.o’d that UPS couldn’t just send it on by UPS. BUT it’s a contract and HSN is still sending things to us in SurePost, but there has not been a contract since the 1st of this year. Just be aware when you don’t get your orders that this might be the case.

I was able to see hubby today. Guess we are both complaining on things that hurt. Hubby had problems with his hands and arms. I am hoping it is weather related, though they shook. It’s the same for me with the legs. Go to do a knee bend and the entire leg shakes. Tomorrow we will be in the 70s for a short while. Another cold front will be approaching. Funny, today was the first time I was comfortable during the visit with hubby. Had on double layers and I was fine until, guess what, they turned the heat on…..He is now missing two blankets. The Sherpa and the one I leant him from the house. Never a dull moment.
I have no idea what happened to our favorite aide. He was a no show for the weekend. We are all hoping he is OK. Well, this week he works three days and has the weekend off. Not sure what is going on. I hope it was a mini vacation.
Hubby was hungry tonight. Normally I have something, but today I was there empty handed. No snacks from any of the aides. I thought of stopping at Culver’s tomorrow. Their fish sandwich is good and so is there chili. However, I did ask, and both are emphatic no can do. So sad because the fish is easy to chew and swallow and the chili is something he loves. I think it is time for a bit of a shake up. Need to make phone calls anyway, so will dial an extra number or two. The reason his hands are shaking is probably due to a lack of vitamins and good food. That includes fresh fruit. I no longer can bring dragon fruit or cut up honeydew. Bananas is also on the no list. Even baked potatoes. Looks like tomorrow my fun will begin.
I do miss our homes up North. Would love to be back there just to check on things. If I leave, have no idea how hubby will be, thus the reason for not traveling. I really miss the change of seasons. Hearing about your snowfall is when I wish I could be in my little office watching the snow fall from the windows. It seems like it’s only a dream nowadays. But then again, there is the flip side of the coin when we wish for warmer days. Just be careful what you wish for.
Have a great evening and enjoy the moonlit sky. Be happy and above all be safe.

NATIONAL CUDDLE UP DAY
Each year on January 6th, National Cuddle Up Day encourages us to snuggle up with someone for the health benefits and more!
January typically has some of the coldest days of the year, so what better way to stay warm and reap the health benefits of cuddling on National Cuddle Up Day? Whether it’s a three-dog night (a night so cold it takes three dogs to cuddle up with to stay warm) or only slightly chilly, there are multiple benefits to cuddling with a human or canine, or other pet.
Cuddling releases oxytocin. This hormone alone has tremendous health benefits. Besides giving us warm and fuzzy feelings, oxytocin reduces pain. So when the cold has made those muscles and joints ache, cuddling can help reduce those aches and pains.
Oxytocin also helps reduce heart disease, lowers blood pressure, stress, and anxiety. Of course, insurance carriers would probably cover cuddling if it weren’t free since it’s such a huge health benefit!
Communication is more than just e-mails, texts, or conversations. Physical touch also communicates trust, commitment, safety, and reassurance. This goes for human-to-human contact as well as human-to-pet contact; cuddling expresses all these things, which are vital to a healthy relationship.
Cuddling also boosts desire. Dopamine is released, stimulating the brain to seek pleasure. But dopamine also can improve memory and focus as well.

I told myself I wasn’t going to buy any Tupperware. Then HSN had to put THE TUPPERWARE KRYPTONITE on the Weekly Deal Drop. The salt and pepper shakers AND THEIR MINIS!!! YES, I unapologetically bought one of each color. Oh and I might have bought just about every other T-ware piece they sold.
