NATIONAL SEA SERPENT DAY

National Sea Serpent Day on August 7 commemorates this siting and the many other stories that continue to be told. If you have ever looked out over the water and thought you saw a fantastic creature break the surface, you’re going to want to stick around. We’re going to explore the sea serpent myth.

PURPLE HEART DAY

Purple Heart Day on August 7 commemorates the creation of the oldest American military decoration for military merit. The Purple Heart honors the men and women who are of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. During the American Revolutionary War, the Badge for Military Merit decorated six known soldiers.

General George Washington created the Badge of Merit in 1782. Washington intended the honor to be presented to soldiers for “any singularly meritorious action.” Its design included a purple, heart-shaped piece of silk bound with a thin edge of silver. Across the face, the word Merit was embroidered in silver. While the badge symbolized the courage and devotion of an American Patriot, no one knows who designed the award.

NATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE DAY

Observed annually on August 7, National Lighthouse Day honors the beacon of light that for hundreds of years symbolized safety and security for ships and boats at sea. At one time, the beacon of light could be found across almost all of America’s shorelines.

A lighthouse is described as a tower, building or any other type of structure that is designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses. It is used as an aid to navigation for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways.

NATIONAL WATER BALLOON DAY

Fill ’em up! The first Friday in August ushers in National Water Balloon Day just in time for the hottest days of summer!

Pop, throw, splash, or just squish! What kid or adult doesn’t enjoy a water balloon in the hot summer? Since Edgar Ellington invented the waterproof sock in 1950, backyards haven’t been the same. Whether kids compete in the Longest Toss or take sides in a good old water balloon fight, the cool, wet fun lasts all summer long.
