NATIONAL SOLITAIRE DAY

On May 22, National Solitaire Day recognizes a card game that has been around for more than 200 years.

Also known as Klondike, the classic version of the game uses a standard deck of 52 playing cards. The object of the game is to clear the board by creating a stack of cards from low to high in each suit. If the player completes each suit, the player wins the game of Solitaire.

NATIONAL MARITIME DAY

National Maritime Day on May 22 recognizes the launch of the maritime industry in the United States. The celebration also honors America’s Merchant Marines for their contributions and sacrifices for our country. In fact, special acknowledgment is often given to ships and seafarers that have held a prominent place in our nation’s history on this day.

NATIONAL VANILLA PUDDING DAY

We recognize National Vanilla Pudding Day on May 22 and use it as an excuse to enjoy a delicious dish of cold, creamy vanilla pudding.

NATIONAL ROAD TRIP DAY

The Friday before Memorial Day is declared National Road Trip Day and serves as the official kickoff of the summer road trip season. Millions of Americans hit the road each year over the long weekend to visit friends and family, while paying tribute to our American heroes.

NATIONAL DON’T FRY DAY

Each year on the Friday before Memorial Day, National Don’t Fry Day aims to raise awareness of all the risks of overexposure to the sun. Today, we are stressing the importance for everyone to remember to use sun protection and practice sun safety.

Unfortunately, skin cancer is increasing in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that one American dies every hour from skin cancer. The risk for ultraviolet (UV) damage to the skin increases as we spend more time enjoying the outdoors now that warmer weather is upon us. We need to take precautions when we are outside in the sun.

It’s important to be proactive about protection. When in the sun, wear sunscreen or other skin protection including hats and long sleeves. Spend time in the shade and take an umbrella with you. The sun’s rays can cause damage even on cloudy days. Re-apply sunscreen, too! Using a good sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat are a few ways to get started with sun safety.

Skin cancer is curable if it is found early. It’s important to be aware of changes on your skin with growths and in moles. See your doctor if you have any concerns.

NATIONAL COOLER DAY

What more could you need than a cold drink for the official launch of summer? Something to keep it cold, of course! National Cooler Day, the Friday before Memorial Day, makes staying cool easy this summer.

NATIONAL CRAFT DISTILLERY DAY

On May 22, National Craft Distillery Day adds spirits to the small-batch revolution. Recognizing the diversity of distilled spirits, the industry followed in the footsteps of the craft brewers and began creating a market for themselves.

Spirit distillation has a long and influential history going back to the Greeks. Some scholars trace the earliest recorded wine distilling recipes back to Anaxilaus of Thessaly. Despite this, Rome expelled him for practicing magic in 28 B.C. The Greeks also took this idea and learned if they boiled wine in an open container, the hot alcohol vapor escaped first. Next, they captured the alcohol vapor.

When they slowly heated the wine in a vessel with a small mouth covered by a bowl, the alcohol collected as a condensed vapor inside the bowl. The Greeks then discovered with the addition of a downward-slanted tube the vapor cooled and collected in the receiving vessel. Thus, the word “distill” comes from the Latin verb destillare, meaning “to drip down.”
