NATIONAL CLEAN BEAUTY DAY

We celebrate National Clean Beauty Day on June 4 as a way to encourage brands to develop clean and sustainable beauty products from the beginning of their life cycle to the end. At the same time, we are going to help educate consumers about seeking better product choices. The movement demands change in our clean beauty practices for a more sustainable world.

Every year, the world produces 260 million tons of plastic. Less than 10 percent of it will ever be recycled. The rest of the 90 percent ends up in landfills or as litter in our surrounding environment. One estimation says that by 2050, the ocean will contain more plastic by weight than fish. That’s why we are using National Clean Beauty Day as a call to action for the beauty industry to create products with clean ingredients. Today, we celebrate the changemakers who are creating circular, restorative products.

More and more, consumers are demanding good-for-you ingredients and environmentally friendly packaging from their products. As the beauty industry responds and begins to offer these choices, consumers and the environment will reap the benefits.

Until now, Clean Beauty focused exclusively on formulas and ingredients. But, we think Clean Beauty has to mean more. Clean Beauty should embrace everything from ingredient sourcing to production methods, and focus on consumer transparency future generations. Clean Beauty empowers future generations by creating a more sustainable beauty industry.

NATIONAL HUG YOUR CAT DAY

When National Hug Your Cat Day rolls around each year on June 4, the purr-fect opportunity presents itself for some snuggle time. Depending on your feline critter’s nature, hugging may not be in the cards. However, like most animals, touch is a vital part of communication – and the same goes for the claw-ful kind.

All kitten aside, if you’re fur-tunate enough to have a feline friend, any attention they give you may be a blessing. Others never leave your side and cuddle often. Of course, most cats have purr-sonality in spades.

Meow, if your feline friend becomes hiss-terical when you try to hug him, you may have to settle for a boop. It’s un-furr-tunate, but it is an option. Those who don’t have any feline companionship may need to litter-ally visit a neighbor or volunteer at a local shelter. Those paw-some critters need some hugs, too.

If you want a cat and are hoping to find one that likes to be hugged, there are certain breeds that are more affectionate than others. Here are some of these cuddly cat breeds:

Ragdoll cats have dispositions that are more dog-like than cat-like. They are so easy going that they limp like a ragdoll when you pick it up.
Maine Coon are a large breed cat that will not only greet you when you come home, it will most likely follow you from room to room. These friendly cats like guests, too and are always up for a cuddle.
Himalayan cats are long-haired cats who adore their owners. Even though Himalayan cats need to be in the mood before showing any affection, they love to sleep next to you or curl up on your lap.
Siamese cats are blue-eyed beauties with a ton of energy. But, when they slow down, it’s usually for some quality snuggle time. Siamese cats are known to bond strongly with their family.
Abyssinian cats are one of the most popular breeds in the world. Abyssinian are very intelligent and can learn commands like a dog. They are also very affectionate and love to interact with people.

NATIONAL CHEESE DAY

Moooove over whiners! June 4th is National Cheese Day! An encyclopedia of cheese will cover the alphabet and broaden your vocabulary. It will undoubtedly contain more varieties of cheese than what’s found at the local grocer.

Cheese is produced from the pressed curds of milk. The milk can come from cows, buffalo, goats, or sheep. Temperature and aging affect the flavor and texture of the cheese, as well as spices and other seasonings added during the process.

The opportunity to go to a cheese tasting or visit a cheesemonger who is knowledgeable about pairings will improve your enjoyment of the cheese you choose. Does Stilton melt? Can you serve Chévre with a salad? Be sure to ask questions and provide your preferences. Your favorite wine might find a new sidekick. You might discover a smokey spread to go with bruschetta or a tangy cheddar to pack with lunch.

In the United States, a road trip to Wisconsin isn’t out of the question for quality and variety. But, they aren’t the only place to find outstanding flavor and choice. Local delis have selections of domestic and imported cheeses, and independent shops offer a rotating inventory beckoning us to keep visiting to see what’s new.

Excellent as a snack on its own, cheese is also a perfect ingredient in pasta, soups, souffle, and many other recipes. We slap it on a sandwich cold, but why stop there when it can be grilled and melted. When company comes to visit, nothing is better than a cheeseball, especially when bacon is added.

Cheese is multinational, too! Every nation in the world has its own variety of cheese. Italy seems to have harnessed the market. They did add it to pizza, and that’s pretty amazing. Savor the opportunity if you ever have the chance to taste cheeses from around the world. For example, hop on over to Greece. They have this dessert called cheesecake. Delicious!

NATIONAL COGNAC DAY
Each year on June 4, brandy lovers and distillers celebrate National Cognac Day. A well-known variety of brandy, Cognac was named after Cognac, France, where it is produced. The region is also known for vineyards and producing wine.

A distilled brandy must meet certain legal requirements within the production to bear the name Cognac. In fact, one requirement during production includes the use of a particular variety of grape called Ugni Blanc. Additionally, the brandy needs to be distilled twice in copper pot stills where the brandy must age the brandy at least two years in French oak barrels from Limousin or Troncais. However, most distillers age their cognacs much longer than the minimum legal requirement.

Producers create close to 200 cognacs to choose from. According to one 2008 estimate, more than 90% of cognac for the U.S. market comes from only four producers.

There are also different ways of drinking cognac. Some people love to enjoy the spirit on its own and savore it neat or over ice. Others even dilute it with a little water. However, cognac is also be used to create a variety of cocktails, too. The next time you order a Manhattan, ask for them to use cognac and see the flavor rise to a new level.

Cognac-Based Liqueur

Grand Marnier – made from cognac and distilled essence of bitter orange.
Pineau des Charentes – a sweet aperitif, composed of eau-de-vie and grape must.
Domaine De Canton – cognac-based ginger liqueur.
Dutch brandy (Vieux) – Dutch imitation cognac, usually containing some cognac.
