Technibond
What happened to Technibond?

Can anyone answer this about jewelry that is one metal over another. So say gold over sterling silver. Does this last as long as pure gold whatever carat? I was watching JTV last night and all of it was cheap in price but everything was some kind of cheaper metal base and then the more expensive metal. I am new to this jewelry thing.

@yellow-rose14, oodiebom is right, you have to keep the plated jewelry in anti-tarnish boxes. I will add, you have to be careful with the plated jewelry. For example, take your rings off before washing dishes or anything that might get harsh chemicals on the plating. To compare, I never had to take off my 14K gold wedding band, nothing hurt it and it never tarnished. It probably had some minor scratches on it, but it stayed bright and shiny.
The best thing about plated jewelry is you can buy a lot of it. With solid gold, you might have to limit how much you buy due to the cost.

hi yellow-rose. it has been my experience that the coating put over gold or sterling silver does not last forever. When it tarnishes, the coating leaves a dull finish on your gold as well as on the sterling silver. It does not look the same. However, I have been able to find tarnish free plastic bags or the regular bags that the jewelry comes in and have added the black squared thing to them. This has enabled my jewelry to look like new for years. Also, Colleen Lopez offers jewelry boxes that are wonderful for all kinds of jewelry. I have had some special pieces of sterling as well as gold in these boxes and they have remained tarnished free for years. Definitely give her Prestige boxes a try, if you haven’t already done so. .

I own a lot of Technibond and none of it has tarnished. I’ve kept it in anti-tarnish boxes. I love all the beautiful gemstone colors and the styles are really pretty. But now I need to down size, so I’m thinking about selling on eBay.

All my technibond stuff tarnished. Junk.

@zee1
Same here… at least most of it. I stored it in tarnish proof containers/armoire, and treated it carefully. No hand lotion, etc. Earrings and necklaces tarnished, too. I had a few of those and several rings. Too bad; I just tossed the whole mess. Should have known better, I guess! -
Nina4ever, you should not have tossed it. It was plated sterling silver, you could have gotten silver scrap cost for it. Some of the bracelets were heavy. Silver has gotten very expensive.

@betsyma184,
Silly me….I thought of that too late. I learned later, though, with other plated jewelry. I didn’t have much Technibond, and silver wasn’t high $$ like it is now. But you’re right; and fortunately I did sell some plated tarnished stuff later on.

Technibond went by the wayside when Barry Diller was no longer the owner. They kept it for awhile but I surmise it conflicted with QVC.

@oodiebom
I remember that before they phased it out, they went from 24k gold plating, to 14k gold plating. “To make it look more realistic.” I had a couple rings of that and the gold just rubbed off over time! A friend of mine bought a byzantine link bracelet in the 14k finish Technibond. The gold rubbed off that, too. It was expensive, and there she was, with a stainless steel looking bracelet. Too late to get her $ back, too.

WOW! Now that’s a name from the past! I always enjoyed my purchases from that line.
