TELEPHONE SCAM
To all Customers and HSN Staff including Customer Service
I received a telephone call from an 800 number. Though I didn’t answer the call, they left a message stating that someone was trying to use one of my credit cards to purchase I-Tunes. For a few hours I sat and worried that one of my cards was being used by someone other than myself or family member. Before returning the call I decided to check on the phone number. I first used “Switchboard” and typed in the number. Though it couldn’t say who was using the number it did tell me that it was a safe call. So I made the call. The person who answered said he was from Amazon. You need to question why Amazon would be so interested in contacting you. Second he wanted my name, and when and if I gave it the next step would be my computer so he could take care of the wrong doing. I decided not to give any info and contacted the banks both by phone and with a follow up e-mail. Please, if you have any doubts, contact your banks so they can go to the right authorities. I gave them everything I had knowledge of and that included the 800 number. Remember also that the free telephone numbers are not only 800, but also 877, 866, etc.. Whatever you do, do not EVER give out your name or any info concerning your accounts. Prior to this call, there was other messages from 800 numbers stating that my credit card would be charged for a continuous subscription in the amount of $299.99 if I didn’t answer the call. Since I’m not subscribing to anything at the moment, I still have not answered that call. Could it have been for I-Tunes??? Maybe. Just be careful and think twice and out of the box when receiving such phone calls from what seems to be legit free calls.
By the way, the second way you can check on the phone number is through “google.” Just type in the 1- and number. You will be able to tell if it’s legit if other people are giving a heads up.

Thank God, you didn’t provide any information. Thanks for advising.

Thanks Skingirl13. There are tons of Robocalls out there. Just because it is a toll free number does not mean they are legal. You must be alert at all times and check things out prior to giving out any info. There is also a service called Scambusters which look into everything.

I have lots of phony calls and emails every week. Never call back and never click on anything!!

Thanks FBN. It was a bit shaky with that phone call, but in a sense I am glad I answered. Hopefully, the bank will connect with the right people and they will be shut down. Cannot say permanently because it could have come from another country.
