Tax on shipping
Does anybody realize that HSN charges tax on already high shipping inflating the cost of the item further? We should start a petition to ban this practice. It’s utterly ridiculous.

To all of you who have not read my comment properly: I am questioning the tax on S&H, not tax on the actual item itself.

Kaycee, southernlight is correct. There are more states taxing some form of shipping and handling than those that are not. Florida is one of those states therefore hsn must comply. It’s been around for years. I sold PartyLite candles about 15 years ago when Ohio started taxing S&H. That dipped into my sales numbers but luckily the majority of my customers understood it was the state, not me or the company. There’s been a strong push the past few years to crack down on collecting unpaid forms of taxes. A lot more companies will start complying now to avoid any audits or fines on back taxes.

Hi Kacee,
Some states require retailers to tax shipping charges because it’s a service. -
No two people that work for HSN will provide the same response when it comes to charging taxes.
Consequently, I moved forward with my shopping. I shop very little at HSN.
Evine, Amazon, and Zulily( cousin to HSN) don’t charge taxes.
When I contacted my local state tax folks, I was told that HSN is charging taxes on a law that may take effect. I was told they choose to do it early.
HSN was dismantled with they were bought.

I wish I didn’t pay tax on Amazon but I do! You’re quite lucky!

Same here. I just double checked my Evine orders and I pay sales tax. I also pay taxes on my Amazon purchases. There are numerous articles available online explaining the changes the Supreme Court made to the sales tax laws. I prefer retailers collecting sales tax on each purchase rather than reporting my purchases on my tax return and paying the sales tax in one lump sum.

Me, ditto. Also miss not being charged on internet retailers and catalogs.

Oodiebom, you’ve always been charged but it was up to us to report our purchases on our tax return. Since many people reported zero purchases, states knew they were losing money and made changes. Brick and mortar stores felt online retailers had an unfair advantage and that’s when the Supreme Court stepped in. I believe the case involved Wayfair. Speaking of taxes, my youngest constantly complains about how much money the government taxes his little, part time job paycheck. I sympathize but chuckle. It’s tough being a grown up, everyone wants a chunk of your money, lol.

HSN is complying with federal and state tax codes/laws. There’s no point in doing a petition. It is what it is. Even so, I miss the old days of not being charged tax on HSN items I purchased.
