Happy Hanukkah
For the first time in twenty years, The Festival of Lights, Hanukkah, begins on Christmas Day. It is “Chrismakah” all rolled into each other’s observances.
Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah, come light the menorah
Let’s have a party, we’ll all dance the horah
Gather ’round the table, we’ll give you a treat
Dreydles to play with and latkes to eat.
And while we are playing the candles are burning low
One for each night they shed a sweet
Light to remind us of days long ago
One for each night they shed a sweet
Light to remind us of days long ago.
The Dreidel Song
I have a little dreidel
I made it out of clay
And when it’s dry and ready
Then dreidel I shall play!
Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
I made it out of clay
And when it’s dry and ready
Then dreidel I shall play!
It has a lovely body
With legs so short and thin
And when my dreidel’s tired
It drops and then I win!
(Chorus)
My dreidel’s always playful
It loves to dance and spin
A happy game of dreidel
Come play now, let’s begin!
(Chorus)

Hanukkah 2024 will be celebrated from sundown on Wednesday, December 25, 2024 to sundown on Thursday, January 2, 2025. This is an eight-day festival.
Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabees defeated the Syrian-Greeks in 165 BCE. The holiday’s name means “dedication” in Hebrew.
Hanukkah is celebrated by lighting a candle on a menorah each night, with all candles lit on the eighth night.
The date of Hanukkah varies from year to year because the Hebrew calendar is based on the moon’s cycles, while the Gregorian calendar is based on the Earth’s rotation around the sun. Hanukkah always begins on the 25th day of Kislev, the ninth month of the Hebrew calendar, but this can fall on any date between late November and December on the Gregorian calendar.
In 2024, Hanukkah begins on Christmas Day, which is only the fifth time this has happened since 1910.
