Tonight, the Phoenicid meteor shower will reach its peak! ☄️
Often overshadowed by the bigger December showers, the Phoenicids are a unique treat for skywatchers in the Southern Hemisphere.
These meteors are fragments of Comet 289P/Blanpain. What makes them special? They are exceptionally slow (hitting our atmosphere at only ~11 miles per second) and often appear as majestic, colorful streaks (shades of orange or yellow) rather than quick flashes.
This year, the timing is tough. A bright Waxing Gibbous Moon (about 81% illuminated) will be lighting up the sky, which will wash out the fainter meteors. However, the Phoenicids are known for being unpredictable—sometimes producing only a few meteors per hour, and other times surprising us with outbursts!
Who can see it? This is primarily a show for the Southern Hemisphere (Australia, South Africa, South America, etc.). The radiant point in the constellation Phoenix does not rise high enough for most observers in the Northern Hemisphere.
🌌Viewing Tips:
🔸Block the Moon: Find a spot where a building or tree blocks the bright moon from your direct line of sight.
🔸Look South: Face towards the southern horizon where the constellation Phoenix rises.
🔸Be Patient: Since rates are variable and the moon is bright, you might have to wait to catch the brighter, colorful fireballs that can outshine the moonlight. -

Exactly 32 years ago. On 1st December 1993 on World AIDS Day, George played a benefit concert called “Concert Of Hope” at Wembley Arena, in London.
George played this benefit concert in front of Princess Diana. She was Britain’s Patron of the National AIDS Trust, and the Concert of Hope was televised worldwide. The AIDS benefit concert also featured KD Lang and Mick Hucknall (lead singer of Simply Red), with David Bowie acting as the host for the evening. The “Concert Of Hope” did much to raise funds as well as an awareness of the disease. That night George sang: “Father Figure”, “One More Try”, “Killer”, “Papa Was A Rolling Stone”, “Love’s In Need Of Love Today” and “Freedom 90”. All George Michael’s performances were amazing and unforgettable. His voice, his dance, his stage presence were absolutely outstanding. With this concert, George has shown, once again, his big heart for supporting many charities and helping people in need.
George Michael spent much of his life campaigning for a cure for HIV/AIDS. The “Concert Of Hope” was reportedly his idea. He was truly a wonderful human being.🩵
