NATIONAL PEARS HELENE DAY

On March 15th, National Pears Hélène Day celebrates a food holiday about the delicious, smooth French dessert combining warm poached pears, vanilla ice cream, and chocolate sauce.

Pears Hélène is a dessert made from pears poached in sugar syrup and served with vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, and crystallized violets. Around 1864, French Chef Auguste Escoffier created the dessert in honor of the operetta La belle Hélène by Jacques Offenbach.

Over time, simpler versions of Pears Hélène have been developed by substituting poached pears with canned pears and the delicate crystallized violets have been replaced with sliced almonds. These modifications have made it easier for more cooks to prepare this must-have dessert.

NATIONAL KANSAS DAY

On March 15th, National Kansas Day recognizes The Sunflower State. Magnificent herds of bison, elk, mule deer, and antelope roamed the vast open plains populated by Cherokee, Osage, Pawnee, and many other tribes. The region became a part of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

Generations of travelers came to Kansas as the country expanded. From the Corps of Discover in 1804 to the Pony Express, all the roads in Kansas seemed to point westward.

Railroads brought rapid settlement to the territory and with it the divisive decision for citizens regarding statehood. Would Kansas be free or slave? The debates turned so vicious, the territory earned the name “Bleeding Kansas” before entering the union on January 29, 1861, as the 34th state and free.

With the railroads, ranching, livestock, and agriculture grew. The verdant, fertile soil of the Kansas farmland made the state the Breadbasket of the World.

Frank L. Baum even depicted farm life for one young girl named Dorothy in his books about a place called Oz. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz took the world by storm, especially when Hollywood put Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Frank Morgan, Margaret Hamilton, and Billie Burke in the cast. There was indeed no place like home, no place like Kansas.

One of the most critical decisions in Civil Rights history took place in Topeka, Kansas. The appeal of Brown vs. the Board of Education was brought before the Supreme Court of the United States in 1954. What had started with groups of parents and teachers in all-black schools in communities across the country had finally culminated in a final decision. Separate but equal violated the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

I am posting this picture because of the movie my mother watched. Grace Kelly was
very elegant.

Grace Kelly won an Oscar for The Country Girl while wearing a classic, ice-blue design by Edith Head. The gown, which was originally created for the movie’s premiere, was cut from a bolt of $4,000 French satin and paired with a matching evening coat. So elegant!

NATIONAL PI DAY

National Pi Day on March 14th recognizes the mathematical constant π. Also known as pi, the first three and most recognized digits are 3.14. The day is celebrated by pi enthusiasts and pie lovers alike!

Pi is the ratio between the circumference of a circle and its diameter. While the idea of pi has been known for nearly 4000 years, accurately calculating it has been something of slightly more recent mathematical development. By 2000 BC, the Egyptians and Babylonians accurately used the constant to build. Mathematicians such as Archimedes, Fibonacci, François Viète, Adriaan van Roomen, and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz all calculated pi by various methods. However, in 1706, Welsh mathematician William Jones introduced the Greek letter π to represent the ratio of a circle’s circumference; pi.

NATIONAL LEARN ABOUT BUTTERFLIES DAY

On March 14th, National Learn About Butterflies Day encourages us to look for a blur of color as butterflies begin migrating across the country. Each year the celebration brings with it an awareness of the varieties of butterflies and their importance to our survival. Spring and summer are just right around the corner, so it is an excellent time to take a few minutes and learn something new about butterflies and appreciate their beauty.

do it. I know you have good days and difficult days you always handled it well.

How are feeling today? OZ had a very loud thunderstorm last night and especially
early morning I thought alright this is it. Poppy ran under the bed I went back to sleep. 😎

I love those cupcakes and I think hubby would definitely like one or two. I just may make the short drive to the Farmer’s Market where they make them homemade daily. I am positive he will love every tasty bite and best of all, they are soft.

I did manage to get the garbage and recycle out. So far neither one have been here for pickup.

There are many ways to get hubby home once everything falls into place. Florida does have busses for the handicapped if needed. So, there is a backup in case the van isn’t possible. Hubby was amazed when I mentioned this since our homes up North do not think of what they can do for people who cannot get around. I surmise their thinking is a convalescent home where the services come to you. All we need to do is to contact the company with the day, date and time for pickup and to contact them when the appointment is over for the return trip.

The bout with the ketchup took a lot out of me. I had tons to do and decided to take it easy and hopefully will play catch up tomorrow. Guess this will teach me to read every label even if there were no problems previously.

Read about the snowfall in Colorado. Hope your Mom and the rest of the family are OK. Not good when you lose utilities. I was concerned with your overnight. Prediction were for tornadoes. Happy to see you three are OK. Take care and stay safe. I’m going to put my feet up for a bit.

How are you feeling tonight? Oz is alright but last night all Hades broke out I thought well
this it. We had hard rain and thunder and lightning all night long well into morning.

I put my head under the covers and prayed we keep our lights. Hey by the time all was
done by mother nature the sun was up and Poppy and I hit the trails. 💕😎 My baby has
never hid under the bed but he was awaken out of sleep.

Oodie Colorado had a lot of snow and one of my sister sent pics to me and other family
members she said it was all on the news all day. Story has it that some people did not get
enough food. I really feel for them.

Next week will be warmer in Colorado my mom and the rest of the family knows how to
prepare for a storm.

All these fashions were well before my time but I love them. I think Edith Head was at
the top of her class with her designs. Also Adrian who was famous the way he dressed
Joan Crawford in the Women and other films.

My mother and family all want me to come back and I will I always do. All my siblings
except one lives there. I have one sister in GA where she is always around our four
kids there and keeps an eye on things for me. 🎈💕

Good afternoon in Oz. Ran around all morning and afternoon with appointments and chores.🏃‍♀️ Then phone calls since I got home, not a spare moment today (except right now).

Another beautiful day but we will be getting your storm tomorrow.🌧 Sis hasn’t given me the “all clear” yet so still staying away. I think I will make a gourmet dinner – a bowl of cereal – since I’m tired.🥣 I did not miss Pi Day, brought home an apple crumb pie from the bakery.🥧 I’ll pour a glass of wine and relax tonight.🍷

You are so funny. 😎😘Poppy was under the bed hubby was up to make sure we still
had lights this was around 2:00 a.m. I thought the lord was arriving and I said my prayers.

This thunder was the loudest I have ever heard. The whole bedroom lit up.
My family knows about our storms as they have lived through many storms here
and they called to make sure we were alright. I got several pics from them today
showing me snow in Colorado and it will snow again tomorrow. I have several family
members who use to work in the mountains they would go up on a Monday and come
down on the weekend. One brother got tired of it he got caught in a bad winter storm
that was it for him. I have been in those mountains and they make your ears pop.

Lady Colorado was so beautiful in November with the snow on the mountains all I had
to do was pull the blinds open and there was a bullseye view I did this thread at my desk
in my family’s home. 😎💕The weather is iffy if you are driving we had to go through
Amarillo, Texas, Tulsa, OK and Wichita, Kanas to get back to our home Kansas.
The storm was so bad they closed part of the highway and we saw semi-trucks in ditches
and cars were stuck too. So I have to chose wisely when we go to Colorado. No worries
my family have all eyes and ears on the roads and the news.

I hope the storms for the these couple of days aren’t as potent as the weather people make it out to be. Be safe.

I was at the Rehab before noon only to find out that the phone call from the urologist came at 10:30 this morning. According to the Head Nurse, hubby did well and there will be another follow up in three months also via phone. There were some questions from the Head Nurse and it seems hubby will be OK and that it will take another three months for the bladder to respond better.

Hubby was having lunch in the dining room when I arrived. He was all smiles. He is so afraid about being a burden to me. I just hope I was able to knock that issue out of the park. There is still a lot that we can do together with or without walking. After two orthopedists felt he would never walk again, though the good leg he may be able to use with therapy. Whatever the outcome we will work together to do the things we enjoy. I also mentioned that the first few days back home will be difficult until we can work out whatever comes our way. I just want him home where I think he will be better off.

I am really concerned with xango and I hope she and her hubby are OK. It’s a month since her last posting. Not like her not to say HI.

Well, it’s getting late. Think I will call it a night and get to bed instead of falling asleep at the computer. Please be safe.

I think the actress who played Vida is still alive. This was perhaps the only movie
Joan Crawford was totally innocent. I love classic movies reminds me of my family
when we would gather around the Telly.

Taci when I went to Colorado in November I did exactly what I said I would do and my
mother and bed got into her queen size bed and watched some classic movies. 💕
I tell you it was cold and snowing so the day was perfect.

today. I am going to take Poppy out soon.

Sheba, yes, It’s a good movie. Wow, do you recall how the woman on the stand testified in front of the Jury. All dressed so well. I loved the fashion. Glad you got to Co last November, I know you longed to get there for quite a while. Is your Mother asking you to get back there soon?
Today I walked on my own and came across, ( for the 2nd or 3rd time) a new dog and owner.
The dog is off lease, so well behaved, and seemed to remember me. Anyways, he is part Husky, Wolf and Coyote. Adopted and then the owner did the DNA testing. He stopped by and then went ahead to a few people and their dog; they were calling him over by name, A very happy dog that looks like a Coyote. lol. yah. Ordered Colleen’s Pave Doublet in Paula Shell. It will match up to some Chrome Diopside earrings I have already. Now done for a while. I can wait for the smaller set of CL boxes.

NATIONAL WORKING MOMS DAY

Every mom is a working mom. On March 12th, National Working Moms Day celebrates the breadwinners and the breadmakers, the educators and the role models, those resilient, inspirational fixtures in our children’s lives.

Ever since the invention of motherhood, mothers have been innovating, creating, and developing. They strategize and organize, never stopping until the work is done. And through each evolution, we know mothers keep pace with the changing world. Working moms invest in our communities because their small businesses thrive there. We can never celebrate them enough, no matter how many cookies they make or how much bread they bring home.

That’s why National Working Moms Day celebrates every mom. Whether you recognize a marvelous working mother in your life or you reflect on your accomplishments as a working mom, join in the celebration!

NATIONAL PLANT A FLOWER DAY
Spring is just around the corner, and March 12th is the day to participate in National Plant a Flower Day. Each year this day is dedicated to the planting of flowers and looking forward to the spring season. Flower gardening has become a hobby for many, young and old, and National Plant a Flower Day is a start to the new season each year.

Marigolds and Daffodils are the flowers of March.

It’s good to know the zone you live in to determine which flowers grow as perennials (those that grow back every year) in your area and which are considered annuals (those that require planting every year). To find out more, check out this Plant Triage site for Hardiness Zones.

Seeds can be started inside and set in a sunny window. When the weather is nicer, move those plants outside. Keep the soil moist but not wet, and follow the seed package’s instructions for proper germination of the seedling. Those who can’t wait, get out those seed catalogs and start planning your next flower garden.

You are absolutely right. That cake is too good to eat. So cute. And yes, I am smiling.

I am feeling much better and will visit hubby in a little while. Missed seeing him yesterday, but decided to stay home and really act on the swelling that reached one side of the tongue. The swelling is gone. It’s the after affects that are bothersome and will take another day or two to heal. This is one of the worse bouts I have had. Forgot what this part was like since it has been years since this happened. Normally, it is just swelling on one side of the mouth and nothing major. This was the whole mouth, cheeks and one side of the tongue. My fault for assuming that the ketchup was OK. Who ever thought that it contained vinegar, corn syrup and corn starch. The top three ingredients that do a number on me. All three are sulfites. Together they made one big mess. Thank goodness it is not a killer. Never assume that the ingredients stay the same. They do not. Especially with Aldi’s. By the way, I no longer add cinnamon to hot chocolate. The list goes on and on. However, if the ingredients contain one no no, I still purchase. Just won’t use more than a teaspoon.

Hubby has an appointment tomorrow. Will be with him . I do not expect any problems or concerns. I will update that adventure when I am home.

Weather has been in the mid 70s to low 80s, Night temps in the mid 60s. Low dew points. I think I read that we will have a cool down next week. I hope it includes a rain event. We still have a drought situation.

Good Tuesday to you!😊 Sis took mom to the doc’s today for a follow-up visit. She has been coughing a lot so they did a chest x-ray – no pneumonia, yay! Sis still has the sniffles so I am still staying away.😕

Beautiful day in the ‘burgh.🌞 My neighbor was already churning up the soil for his garden. He starts a lot of his veggies right now indoors and replants when the frost is over. I think since Easter is early this year a lot of people will want to plant in April which is too early here. We’ve had frost on Mother’s Day.🥶 Our weather is very similar to Oz, spring one day, winter the next.

Good day on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Oodie I read your post below and I am glad your
husband did not see you the first day. My goodness that sounds awful about your reaction
to a sulfite. Oodie now a days you have to read every label and if not something in the food
there is always a recall due to one thing or another. Yikes!

I miss the good ole days when you could eat food and it was safe. So many re-calls due
to foreign particles in food or listeria of some kind of certain fruits and veggies.

I am so glad your home will be ready for your husband return. What a happy day that will be.

Please take it easy and take care of yourself. My hand has cleared up and from this day
forward I will wear gloves when working in the yards. 😎

Hi in Oz. I thought there were some very lovely gowns last night.💃 I think it was last year that many of the ladies cantaloupes were ready to escape.😲 Seemed more classy yesterday and I actually made it to the end.

I did enjoy the fashion last night felt like ole times. I love dressing up to the nines. 😎💕
I always said I want to be Iris Apfel decades from now and I still mean it. Iris was always
well put together it was not just her clothes it was a smile and attitude. I miss her already.
