The Black Sheep

When we move beyond comparisons and accept our differences, we appreciate the significance of our upbringing and socialization in each of our unique life’s journey.

Many of us have had an experience in which we felt like the lone black sheep in a vast sea of white sheep. For some of us, however, this sense of not belonging runs more deeply and spans a period of many years. It is possible to feel like the black sheep in families and peer groups that are supportive, as well as in those that are not. Even if we receive no overt criticism regarding our values, there will likely be times when it seems that relatives and friends are humoring us or waiting for us to grow out of a phase. Sometimes we may even think we have been adopted because we are so different from our family members. These feelings are not a sign that we have failed in some way to connect with others. Rather, they should be perceived as the natural result of our willingness to articulate our individuality.

Many black sheep respond to the separateness they feel by pulling back from the very people to whom they might otherwise feel closest and embracing a different group with whom they enjoy a greater degree of commonality. But if you feel that your very nature has set you apart from your peers and relatives, consider that you chose long ago to be raised by a specific family and to come together with specific people so that you could have certain experiences that would contribute to your ongoing evolution. You may be much more sensitive than the people around you or more artistic, aware, spiritual, or imaginative. The disparate temperament of your values and those of your family or peers need not be a catalyst for interpersonal conflict. If you can move beyond comparisons and accept these differences, you will come to appreciate the significant role your upbringing and socialization have played in your life’s unique journey.

In time, most black sheep learn to embrace their differences and be thankful for those aspects of their individuality that set them apart from others. We cannot expect that our peers and relatives will suddenly choose to embrace our values and offer us the precise form of support we need. But we can acknowledge the importance of these individuals by devoting a portion of our energy to keeping these relationships healthy while continuing to define our own identities apart from them.

When I saw the post with her color swatches I knew Under The Sea was her theme.
That is why I post The Little Mermaid Songs for her. 🙂 I did this for my girls too.

Cherie I think the rug is perfect. I mention sad because that will give her the feel of
being on a beach. ♥ Looks like you have the wall and flooring now what about
accessories? Linens, lamps, etc, etc. This is a fun project not stressful at all.

Cherie you will not believe this but my Uncle passed on St. Patrick’s Day. Uncle Nick
was married to my Aunt who just lost my Aunt last month. Almost a month and she is
alone. My cousins are taking care of her. I have been on the phone with her. I am alright
I did not know he had health problems and he was in his 90;s so no more suffering for him
or for her. This is in another State. May he RIP! This all started in December on Christmas
with my SIL that was a total surprise. Then my Aunt now my Uncle. I am not telling my father.
So I just keep moving. My Aunt is well off so she will not want for anything I just don’t like the
fact she is alone and they never had children. My Aunt is an R.N. as was the one that passed.

Life goes on and so do I. Have a wonderful day Cherie I think you knew I was going to say

Good Morning and good to see you. 🙂 I understand about your headaches and I knew
you get them. I do get headaches sometimes during weather changes or stress and they
can really annoy you. Glad you have been shopping. How is the cat?

We all think about you and I do leave little posts to you and always that cup of coffee or
flowers. ♥

This little Thread just keeps going I been through a lot since Christmas and going there again.
I will talk about another time. I will be watching Heidi’s Shows as I always have.

Wow she has a lot of beautiful things.♥ It is raining and cold here. So I am drinking some

Good morning everyone! Sheba, where are you? Maybe you are getting rested up for Heidi? I Have already been on a binge & she isn’t even here yet!
I haven’t been online as my migraines have been severe the past month so I didn’t do much kindle reading or forum reading so I have some catching up to do. After 9 years of trying different meds my dr still can’t get my migraines under control so when u don’t see me around it’s generally because I’m under the weather.

Hi Sheba … How was your Sunday. We all just took it easy today. Daughter loving the mural that looks like this one. She says it will feel like she is ” Living Under the Sea”! Cherie would prefer the short pile but her pick is a Plushy-Plush carpet … probably cause she plays on the floor.
