The “It” Girl
After a gossip columnist named her the “It” girl of 1952, Monroe happened to mention in an interview that she had posed nude for a 1949 pinup calendar. The remark caused a minor scandal, which 20th Century Fox dealt with head-on, maintaining that Marilyn had taken the modeling job out of financial desperation. The storm passed.

A Girl’s Best Friend
The character she played in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” had a passion for diamonds, but in real life Marilyn was far from a gold digger. “I don’t care about money,” she once said. “I just want to be wonderful.”

An Avid Reader
Although she dropped out of high school after getting married at the age of 16, Monroe took a serious interest in books. When she met Nikita Khrushchev, they talked about “The Brothers Karamazov.”
