Tablets… Thoughts? Recommendations?
So… Any thoughts on a new tablet? First, my WiFi stinks as it’s ATT DSL and I need to make a change in providers (just haven’t done it because of hassle and lack of time). Second, I do have an iPad Mini (maybe about 8 years old? I’m not even sure)that I “had” loved but it now seems incredibly slow. Admittedly, I don’t want to spend hundreds for another similar product. What about the Amazon Fire tablets (watching Aaron do a presentation with the HD 8 Plus right now)? What I currently do is, surf the net. I don’t game…I currently don’t watch movies or series (I know, that makes me such a weirdo). I do Twitter, news, and sports (ok, the H & Q too). Now that I am retired, I want a rework of my internet service, phone and TV (in my area most now have Spectrum…I currently have Dish but they have lost 2 sports channels that I want. Getting all the sports channels that I want, is problematic without a provider like Spectrum). Anyway, tablet thoughts?

Hi Again. I would hold off purchasing the larger Kindle until you see what Amazon has to offer. If you are a Prime member, they postponed the Prime 2 Day Sale for July and will try to have it in September. Dates have not been announced. Amazon usually has all the Kindles on sale during this event. I really think you will like the Kindle 8.” If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

That’s great thinking! I’m not a prime member but may approach my niece who is and see if we can make an “arrangement “, when that event gets closer.

I’ve got 2 fire 10 7th gen tablets I bought for a bit more than $100 each in a black friday sale from amazon in 2018. I put google play store on them following some on!ine instructions so I can have any app from there and not just the crummy amazon apps. They each have 64GB. I’ve got loads of books and a lot of music on them and still have a lot of space left. I think there is a place for an sd card but I haven’t seen it. I’ve used them for streaming online classes, and I can use them anywhere in the house or outside, and the picture size and quality is pretty good for a tablet, much better than the smaller one I had. I’ve got spectrum for the internet only because it’s my only option not to have a contract. I don’t watch US tv or have cable, I only stream tv and films from apps, mostly from my own country. These have been useful options when I haven’t been able to use my tv. The sound quality is a lot better with headphones/earbuds than with the built-in speaker. They charge fairly quickly, probably within a couple of hours or less, I haven’t timed them, and I can use them for hours before I have to charge them. I keep one charging and use the other, and by the time one runs down the other has already got to full charge. For the money I spent on them and the use I’ve had out of them I would probably buy them again. Ipads were so much more money, and I don’t know anything about them because they were outside my price range. Amazon customer service removed the ‘special offers’ when I asked them to for free.

Hi Pipman and welcome to retirement. Ok, I also have an I-Pad and guess what. I have yet to use it. I am enjoying the Kindle Fire. I have the 7″ and the l0.” When I have a doctor or dental appointment I gravitate to the smaller one because it fits in my purse. Besides it does the same thing as the larger one. I can read a book or a magazine while I wait or I can surf the internet since most physicians have wifi. My larger Fire is mostly used at night when I cannot sleep. I am addicted to jigsaw puzzles which are free to download and best of all you get freebies when you least expect it. They do have sales from time to time as well which costs $.99. The fonts in both machines are good and you can make the fonts larger or smaller depending upon your likes. In all the machines I do read the latest news from papers and also from MSN. Weather reports are a high priority now that hubby and I are in Florida. In other words these tablets can do just about anything your computer can do. Also, where we live in Florida, we have Spectrum. In the Northeast where we also have homes we have Comcast. If I had a choice of the two I would choose Spectrum hands down. There customer service staff are good and reliable. I love when we head North that I can put all their services on seasonal hold for up to nine months. I also like that if you shut your phone down they have an answering device that not only works while you are away but also when the services go down. Back to the Kindle. I initially purchased two 7″ with only 8 GB. These were the frist two shown on HSN. From that one I purchased the 10″ from Amazon with 32GB. I like the 10″ also for watching videos and movies. The sound quality could be better, but you could always hook them up to a speaker that is also wifi and pair the two. Best thing, I can take the speaker into any room without the Kindle and listen to the music I love. If you decide to invest in a Smart TV down the road, you really will not need ROKU or Amazon, but rather purchase the channels you want from places like HULU. Amazon in most cases is already on the list as is public television.

OODIEBOM… THANK you so much for the reply! I did order the Fire HD 8 Plus, right after I saw your post. In fact, I think it was around 10PM and by the next morning it showed shipped! Shipped out of IL, so figured it must becoming from more of an Amazon warehouse than a HSN one. The pricing on the pack up is good…even with shipping, the inclusion of the case and even the coupon stuff for different things to try out. The 8 will be the same size as my poor old iPad Mini. If it works out well for me, I’m already thinking that the 10 might be a really good purchase as well. I just got the “Duo Multi-Position Foam Tablet Pillow 2-Pack” from the Q and love those things! No more crunched arm holding the phone or even my iPad…I can have it laying on my chest and not have to hold the device. I am getting ready to make a decision to drop convert my ATT landline & crummy ATT DSL and my DISH network, all over to Spectrum. I do want to nag them what the “full” price of the internet service as well as TV is, after the promotional period runs out (2 years for internet and 1 year for TV). There are 4 (yes, 4…living room, kitchen, office and bedroom) TV’s and need to decide how many boxes I am willing to pay for…probably 2 and then will think about some other system for the kitchen and office. Anyway, thank you again!
