Fruit flies and regujlar gnats driving me nuts……..Anyone have suggestions
Have no plants, and do not leave fruit or any food out.
Keep drains clean few times weekly I use baking soda followed by bleach and lots of boiling hot water and pour it down the drains and toilet.
Keep everything in refrigerator and in kitchen pantry closet in quart size canning jars with tight caps. Nothing can go in and nothing can come out.
I also added food grade diatomaceous earth also known as DE into my AP flour canister and in my rice and instant mashed potatoes canisters too. (If interested only buy food grade DE and not pool grade, because pool grade DE is for pools and is poisonous).
I have tried using a bowl and adding apple cider vinegar and some dawn dish washing liquid but only caught a few.
I have hung those fly, fruit fly, mosquito, gnat sticky strips and they caught a few too.
I live by the ocean.
No plants in my home but there is a fruit store near by and I wondered if they are coming in from the fruit store?
Got pest control and they charged a small fortune and just hung their sticky tapes and wanted to spray pesticides all over but I said no to pesticides, paid them and goodbye.
I do not want to inhale pesticides or subject my pet or company to that.
Any other suggestions that worked for this type of dilemma would be greatly appreciated, and thank you.
I never have a problem with them unless my grandkids stay over and then I always leave the bathrm lights on. 😉 I live out in the country and I almost drove myself crazy trying to figure out what caused them and how they got in, I tried it all too but I’ve learned to turn off all the lights at night…after they fall asleep . It works for me.
@redman1, I’m curious to know if the bug zappers have helped. I never thought about getting the stationary ones, but they seem like a good idea. Please let me know if they are working for you. Thanks!
I ordered 2 pest electric bug zappers and that bug zapper racket also
recommended on this thread, and they should be delivered in a couple of days.
Will update when I have news, and hope that news is great!
Now I now what my sweet Mom meant when I was a kid and asked her
“Mom why did God create the mosquito and bugs, and other things that crawl
jump, or fly, that bite us?”.
She replied ” to cause mankind irritation and to create havoc, that’s why”.
She was so right
P,S, HSN is out of stock on Miracle Cream I will call and ask if they plan on
LOL NO! I believe the Miracle Clean comment was tongue in cheek!
Thanks for catching that Imcroaky! My miracle clean comment was tongue in cheek for sure! Redman, please don’t buy the Miracle Clean as the reviews are terrible about the scents smelling like bug spray. When I said it clears out the house, I meant it cleared out the occupants because the smell is soooo bad.
Thanks for replying.
I will contact pest control if the remedies offered above and elsewhere do not work.
They can spray outside of the place, but I cannot so they would have to spray something to kill the suckers and larvae off, but not cause a life threatening reaction from me, since I am highly allergic to many things.
Miracle Clean seems to clear everything out of the house!!! LOL !!!!!
But seriously, If you feel they are coming into your house from a store nearby, perhaps spray around the outside of your doorway and windows with a bug deterrent.
esmereldaQ thanks so very much great tips!
For fruit flies…A small dish with a little cider vinegar covered with plastic wrap with a small opening for them to get in. Some people add a little dish soap but I don’t know that that is needed.
eta…Alternatively you could get a little four pack of red wine of some kind (Sutter Home, etc.) and drink most of one of the bottles and put the rest of the bottle on the counter or wherever for the fruit flies. That’s actually my preference and it works pretty well.
Thanks so much for the tip.
I will buy a few electronic pest bug zappers and the hand held racket item you also recommended.
Hope they all work to get rid of them quickly.
I don’t know how to control them, but the easiest way I have found to kill the ones in my house is one of those bug zapper rackets. I always lose sight of them because they’re so small, but with the racket, you can just wave it around until you hear the zap. I got mine at Walmart a few years ago and I love it for almost all bugs except for actual flies….a regular fly swatter works best for those. Sorry I can’t be of more help.
