Sluggish Jewelry Sales Reported in HSN 3rd & 4th Quarter, 2015
Sluggish Jewelry Sales were reported as a major factor in HSN’s poor performing 3rd quarter of last year. Despite HSN’s 10% sales growth in the 4th quarter, it was again reported that jewelry sales were sluggish and that jewelry merchandising changes were underway.
While I’m still purchasing HSN jewelry, I began to cut way back in July, 2015. Are you purchasing less HSN jewelry now than in previous years? If so why?
Overpriced. Their costume jewelry sells for what gold pieces used to sell for.
I would have helped lift HSN out of the sluggish sales doldrums if I could have found more of Nicky Butlers Celtic collection for sale. I love his Celtic pieces and can’t find them on here anymore. Bummer!
A lot of this may have to do with the ‘hard sell’ approach that kicked in around a year or so ago.
1. This is very very limited.
2. This is close to sellling out.
3. This is not coming back.
4. This will never come back, and if it does not at this price.
5. We just can’t get any stock of this any more.
6. The mine is closed, and never going to reopen. (3 guesses, and first 2 don’t count)
7. Run to the phone.
8. Clock is on, last call.
9. This setting is designed for a king, or queen, or royalty.
10. Producer Dan, Rocky, (fill in the name), how many of these do we have left?
11. Oh my we have bad news.
12. This is what you see in couture.
Not to mention how the actual size of the ring/stone is so magnified, when you actually get it, you’re let down.
File this under, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results….
My spending goes to where the selection, quality and price takes it.
Hopefully companies can figure that out….. or hire someone who can.
It ain’t rocket science.
I have come to like Stainless Jewlery – very durable, looks like SS and doesn’t tarnish.I won’t purchase SS w/ CZ etc….but I did get I used to buy alot of Carol B jewelry but as one review said … not real gold – 10K to me is not real gold & her prices are thru the roof. The pieces I have purchased were purchased several years ago so did got evil bracelet sterling slilver w/ diamonds & a few other pieces.
The "Q" just had clearance prices on 14K jewelry & I did order a beautiful gold bracelet. Evine has interesting pieces …& I get compliments on the pieces from Evine.
I have stopped w/ jewelry unless clearance prices & even then it has be unique. I have a local jeweler and I can get exactly what I want and his is always fair in his pricing. I also plenty of friends who have so much that they sell me what I like for deep discounts…Tiffany pieces, gold pieces, watches, etc… HSN & other shopping channels are not the only avenue to find real gold & really nice jewelry.
I bought most of my jewelry ten years or more from HSN. The quality of stones and the variety were much better then. Glad I bought some beautiful pieces back then. I don’t buy anymore because I have enough and the quality is so much better.
Where is Be jeweled?
I am not purchasing as much. I only purchase items that are a good deal and pieces that are unique.I did purchase a nice ring from Xavier. I like Victoria Wieck, Xavier, Jade of Yesteryear because they use sterling silver. I purchase from HSN, Q, and maybe a little more from Evine. I do enjoy all the jewelry shows. In fact Evine starts Gem Week tomorrow. I will probably watch quite a bit. I never get tired of watching jewelry shows. Not planning on purchasing right now though.
& right about now, Heidi Daus should be re-negotiating her contract with HSN, for keeping their jewelry sales afloat! Lol
And all these people who keep reminiscing about the old Jewelry thread contributers, should probably count your blessings, and be glad they are gone….I read on there and it seemed more like a mob-mentality/keeping up with the Jones’ kind of thing. "Oh, you bought the Today’s Special in two colors, well I bought it in all five!"
And I’m sure all those people are still making payments to this day.
I have curtailed a great deal of my jewelry shopping on HSN. I stopped buying anything from Rarities as the last pieces I got there were problems with like missing stones and so on. Not to mention the line is over priced in my opinion.
Heidi seems to just get more and more expensive as the demand here is so high. The more everyone loves it and is willing to pay the prices, the prices go up and it IS costume jewelry.
I like Nicky Butler, a fellow countryman, and Studio Barse and some of Victoria Weick in gemstones.. Some Chaco Canyon. But even then, I wait for things to get marked down considerably before I buy.
There are too many costume lines at too high a price here anymore. I have moved on to other sources for my jewelry. HSN needs to relook at what they are doing with their jewelry sales.
My reduction from jewelry purchases is driven by the complete lack of interest in mystery metal, silicone stuffed, yet priced as if it was real. I have a lot of jewelry from the days when gold, real gold was a standard. I am willing to recognize gold increased dramatically and willing to pay a fair price. I’ll do silver (though I’m not a fan of rhodium plated silver either) if the gems are nice and the price point decent. Until then, I’m content with my own collection.
I think there is too many jewelry show. i feel bad that I have sent so much back
When some jewlery prices drop a lot, over 50%, it makes me wonder the true value of these items. Why not price initially then with a lower markup (like Taci recommended)?
Also sometimes reviews disappear and it would be better to keep the reviews available to us even though they may not be the best. When I asked about one item that disappeared I was told that it sold out – but other sold out items still have their reviews listed. It is better if everyone is more informed and then they will be happier about their purchases.
Maybe also offer a larger selection of more affordable/value-driven white diamonds and gold pieces?
I miss watching BeJeweled – it was a fun show. I enjoyed seeing what their special discounted item was during the show.
Overall though HSN has a wide variety of very pretty and interesting jewelry so it is fun here!
I make a lot of jewelry purchases for my wife and she buys quite a bit also. I think HSN could generate more sales in their jewelry lines if they had more realistic pricing. Many of you make your purchases when the jewelry goes on sale. But when you compare the sale price to other places it really looks like the asking price when it first went on sale is super inflated with a high markup. It’s time for HSN to realize that not everyone is ignorant and some of us are quite savy to their pricing. If they are serious about their bottom line for their fiscal quarters then they should do something about it other than changing hosts when sales drop. It’s NOT about the host but what they are offering and price they are asking for the item. You don’t have to be an Einstein to see quite a few of the items with semi precious stones in silver are priced to high. Add a name to the line of jewelry and the situation is even worse in pricing. Fair pricing will increase sales and give the company bigger profits in their quarters…..Ronnie
Hi Snow, It seems that jewelry prices are highly over inflated instead of the regular type of mark ups. Some of the items I see here and elsewhere, were items I might have seen in a Department Store for $50.00 and under. Then the items might have gone on sale, and certainly I wouldnt have to pay fee’s to purchase it.
Also, the reliabilty and cost of the purchase factor into it. How many pieces arrive broken, glued, maked up stones, wrong size, only to be sent back? Sometime this deters me from purchasing from that vendor again because I expected more. The consumer should experience quailty pieces that arrive new and in perfect condition every time.
In my opinion, HSN does a great job of fast shipping. But I agree with the comments below that shipping should be reduced or factored into price. I dont want to spend 5$ and up to buy something and do it all over again to return it. I think this is a huge consideration for most people.
To the comment below, how much to you need? There are collectors out there and those who are just starting to learn and buy jewelry. I dont buy something because the host says it might sell out or is this or that and I dont think people feel they have to buy anything. To me the answer is, buy whatever you want that makes you happy that you can afford.
Cindy thread was amazing and I appreciated all those who were a part of it.
