Rarities coral/tourmaline/vermeil ring fiasco
So here’s my latest Rarities poor quality story. I ordered the coral/tourmaline/vermeil ring on sale from an original $499 price. I almost returned it when I first arrived because the coral cab is very pale with a white blotch nothing like the photo. There was something about it that I liked anyway and it was on sale for $299.
Last week I loaned it to my daughter to wear before I wore it. She was already nervous while doing an interview with a local news channel about an upcoming Earth day event when she raised her arm and the coral cabochon flew across the room. She had less than 45 seconds to find it and exit the studio after the interview.
Turns out the stone doesn’t have prongs and it isn’t glued into the ring. It’s “held” in place by the small, narrow vermeil shelf. Is that how a $500 vermeil ring is made? Seriously?
My dilemma is whether to return the ring or to try to glue it to the shelf myself? My trusted jewelry store just went out of business after 100 years so I need to find another repair place. I know I should return it but there’s something about it that I really do like. I guess if we accept poor quality things will not improve.
More than anything, I’m disappointed in receiving yet another faulty piece of Rarities jewelry. I’m so tired of praying that my Rarities items don’t break when I wear them instead of looking forward to wearing them. I’ve been a fan since the first show and I’ve been upset and quit buying before but this may really be the end of a beautiful relationship.
Thank you for listening to my latest Rarities tale of woe.
The last ring I bought, 454459 from Himalayan Gems, didn’t work out. The shank is horrible. It’s thin, has sharp edges, and was very uncomfortable. Costume jewelry is made better than that ring. I really loved the look so I was going to take it to a jeweler and see if he could fix it, but changed my mind at the last minute and did return it. Also, one of the prongs on the end was pulled out and snagged on everything. Even though it’s thin, I would have kept if the shank had been designed better.
Due to all the inferior things I’ve purchased lately, I’m going to stick with clearance items. Quality is down on many HSN products and I’m tired of paying return shipping costs.
It was tough and I felt like I was experiencing some sort of jewelry withdrawal but I did not record or watch either of Carol’s shows yesterday. I did see that the focus was real gold jewelry. Nothing ordered online either. I can do it!!!
I just received the diamond Rarities ring. Well, I am very much surprised. It is absolutely beautiful and the stones are brilliant. I went into a really dark room and the diamonds glittered. It’s a keeper for sure. And above all the ring is comfortable. It will not snag on clothing or on either side of the finger. It’s Item #444-553. I would use a picture here if I knew how to do it.
Thanks everyone for the information on rarities jewelry. I have just purchased her South Sea pearl ring with sapphires and matching drop earrings for over $540. and was concerned about the sapphires falling out of them as soon as I saw the set in person. I picked up two pairs of 10 ct gold stud gemstone (amethyst and blue topaz) with diamond earrings and like those as the fit is nice. I was unaware that her jewelry had an issue with stones falling out. Her stuff isn’t cheap.
I so undertsand your tale of woe with Rarities. I love the designs, but every piece of jewelry I have purchased from the line with the exception of one necklace, has lost a stone or even broke in two within 3 months of owning the piece.I still have and wear her first TS the day she premiered, but after that onxy band broke I had to have the stone reset in a new purchased setting at my jewelrer. I love the Topaz stone, but how sad one has to fully reset a product from a brand to trust and enjoy it. I used to buy tons of jewelry from HSN but have stopped bcause everything breaks or looses a stone under a year and that is with light use.
On Dec. 23 I was weak and purchased Colleen’s garnet multi-stone mushroom style ring and sure enough on the third time I wore it one of the stones right on top fell out. So now I have yet another HSN-purchased ring missing a stone (nice big hole right on top of ring) to add to my HSN damaged jewelry collection. It is sad because 8-10 years ago I purchased some incredible jewelry from HSN but after Colleen’s ring fell apart,I’m finally done with HSN fine jewelry. I don’t think purchasing jewelry insurance should be mandatory because the produts are so poorly made they can not even be worn a handful of times before a repair would be needed.
Snow, I no longer buy from HSN due to the issues with their jewelry, to be honest, it’s junk. The stones are of poor quality, the cuts are sub-standard, the settings don’t fit, some of the stones are actually fake (I have some to prove it). HSN has lost me as a customer due to the problems, and unless they fix these problems, I will not buy anything from them.
I’d send it back too.
I’ve always been a little suspicious of the Rarities brand. So Sorry for your troubles. I have hesitated to buy anything from her because I know the vermeil will eventually wear off. I live in a fairly small community and it would be trouble and expense for me to get anything replated. Good luck to you – and thanks for posting!
Oh, Snow. Sigh. Groan. I am so, so sorry. When will we learn??? Your poor daughter. Can’t believe you just lost your jeweler too – mine had a stroke and had to retire! :womansad:
As for keeping or returning…how much do you love it? Will you be able to wear it without getting irritated over it and/or worrying about the stone flying out again?
I’m so sorry.
Oh, Snow, sorry to hear about yet another Rarities quality issue. My thought is to return it. The reason is because even at the sale price, it’s still expensive. Why should anyone profit from this quality issue? While Rarities has amazing and interesting styles, stones falling out is old news.
Get your money back, and find a quality piece for the same amount of money.
Best of luck to you!
Why does she call her line “rarities” to begin with? Her offerings aren’t rare. Anyway, I’m sorry to hear about your bracelet. Such a shame. If it were “me” I would return it. Glued stones will come out again and before you know it, you’re liable to lose more.
I am so sorry, Snow. Your daughter had to feel humiliated when the stone flew across the room. I know you and others have had issues with Rarities. I don’t even look because I don’t want the return hassle. I think it’s time to end the relationship and find another source for your gems.
I just purchased a Rarities diamond ring with a coupon. I hemmed and hawed over this ring because she had others that just did not match up to what others were saying. There was no brilliancy to the diamonds, no shine, no anything. Just dull stones put together. The ring purchased was over $500 but was reduced for one day and with the coupon made it somewhat affordable. I just hope and pray that it will be something I will love since I can no longer cancel it. There were no reviews and no video. Oh well.
I’d send it back – someone needs to send these vendors and hSN the message that poor quality and craftsmanship is unacceptable. You shouldn’t have to worry about your jewelry, and vendors should stand behind their products.
There are plenty of fish in the sea, and plenty of places to find better deals for quality products.
ETA : I’ve found some very nice quality pieces on Evine, and their sale markdowns are awesome.
:catsurprised: :catmad: :catsad:
Oh Snow! This is beyond ridiculas. I have a gut feeling no matter what glue you try the falling out will be an issue through out time…. if you decide to try, I hope I’m wrong and the 2 of you live happily ever after.
I have had my eye on this ring for a while. I don’t understand why this is such a constant issue with the Rarities line of which I am also a big fan of design wise. But this quality issue just must be addressed!
It is also telling that Carol does not stand by her jewerly with any kind of guarantee or repair service. Why procure such amazing works of art and fall short on the execution over and over?
I recently decided to get the famous Rarities prasiolite honker that alsmost everyone had issues with when it went on sale. I actually got one that was flawless but the construction issues many reported w/ that ring and so many other of her pieces are appalling.
I am so sorry this happened, thank you for telling us. I sincerly hope that HSN and Carol find artisans that can honor the designs and make quality pieces to last.
I have also had so many problems w/ poorly finished prongs that scratch the skin and snag things… we could go on and on and maybe we should so that something is finally done right in the construction and quality control depts.
They are all always talking about how strict the quality control is and I just don’t agree from countless purchases.
