The cameo’s are nice. But to put artistic jewelry in bronze or silver stone,to me lessen the value.Glue in stones,no thanks. These prices should be cheaper. Do Amedeo wear this costume jewelry, maybe on tv,but I doubt he wears it off the air.
There is nothing wrong with costume jewelry, but to sell the items Amedeo selling now 90% of it in my opinion is junk. But the items are selling so somebody is buying it. Yes there are those who treasure his old cameos, so if you want those go to his shop that he always talks about. Where he has triple the prices even for sterling silver.
Purchased my mother one of Amedeo’s cameos about 15 years ago. It is the typical cameo color, the carving is astonishingly beautiful, and the piece is set in gold—thin 14kt gold, but gold.
It can be worn as a pin or a pendant. The carvings now are appalling. They look roughly done with nothing approching fine craftmanship except on a few more expensive pieces. The carving in my mother’s cameo is perfection. Every hair, flower, eye, her nose shape, everything is obviously done by a master carver.
When I hold it up to the light, I can see through the cameo where the artist carved away the darker portions of the shell. I am so thrilled I spent so much money for it when I did.
I have looked at it under a magnifying glass, and every time I see it am stunned at the quality of it compared to the rough hewn carvings done today. Particularly on the fake turquoise with all those holes in them. What is that about?
The plain gold band around the cameo is all it needs. To see the pieces today surrounded by strange metals with crystals all over the place, it just ruins any of the few good pieces that might come along.
Amedeo talks about how fewer and fewer carvers can do the fine work any more, yet he is producing man more pieces than he used to. It certainly shows that the great carvers are few and far between.
It breaks my heart I won’t be able to find something by him of the previously quality. The giant rings especially make me sad to see them worn by the hosts and the models, they look gaudy and cheap.
I’m sure many more women would love the old stunning pieces produced, and be willing to pay for them. At least give us more options than good work once in a great while.
I would agree that his items are overpriced. I ordered Item 342-903 earrings & #429-902 ring. The cameos are lovely but are compromised of faux turquoise and are set poorly into rosetone metal with ho hum crystals. Some of the crystals in the earrings are set so poorly that it looks like they are missing and it is quite visible. The carving is done in Italy with assembly in China. The earrings are marked down from $229.95 to $179.95 and the ring is marked down $40.00. Too expensive in my opinion…
