What Do You Know About Strokes?
My husband had a massive stroke the day after Christmas. He is unable to say very much, though he is much better than he was. It was on his left side, so his right side was affected. He can walk, and use his right arm to an extent. He got out of the hospital Friday, and is supposed to stay in a nursing home for three weeks for physical and speech therapy.
Please tell me anything you know about strokes. I’ve done a lot of reading but want to hear from those who have been through this. And any other comments any of you may have.
Hello , I can imagine your worry and concern is heightened due to your husband’s condition and you are interested in the Community and friends feedback. Please note, there is no medical consultation or advice offered in Community but I hope you can receive caring comments and support. Best regards to you and your family.
Dazed, I’m so sorry to hear this. My mother had a stroke 5 years ago totally out of the blue. She had been fasting (2 days) before scheduled surgery and collapsed in the bathroom while packing. The first 48 hours were touch and go and she lost the use of the right side of the body. She did spend about 6 weeks in a rehab hospital (after the initial hospital stay) and had physical therapy 2-3 times a day. The PT was very difficult at first but the hard work and persistence paid off. Her speech was slurred initially but came back 100%. By the time she went home she was still using a cane to assist with walking. After about a year, she was back walking, climbing stairs and doing most of the things she did before the stroke. She did have a collapsable (sp?) wheel chair in the car for long trips to the mall or anyplace extensive walking or standing was required. She did gain about 80% of her strength back in her right arm and hand and leg over the course of a year.
Go out and visit several facilities before deciding on one and observe and meet the staff. There is hope and many people do recover their strength and mobility.
My MIL had a stroke with the right side affected. She went to rehab and recovered about 90% capacity over the course of a few months. She was about 78 years old. I"m sorry that your husband had a massive stroke. Please let us know how he is doing.
Had a stroke last year Feb 1. Could not walk, or swallow for 3 months, all of which was spent in the hospital. After I was released I had in home thearpy which insurance covered for 6 months. Now I still have some sensitivity on my right side, some minor balance issues, and at times I get slightly dizzy, however its been a very successful recovery. The biggest take away from it all is living a healthyier lifestyle, at least for me. I change my diet, and spend 30 min a day on treadmill. It was and still is a scary event and one I hope not to repeat. Best of luck in your husbands recovery, its slow and furstrating at times but it will come.
