Does Helen have a true speech impediment ? All of the stuttering seems to occur when she’s rushed or at a loss for words. If so I can be patient. But with the frequent flight of ideas, never finishing a thought, the uhms, uhms, the babbling, it’s just annoying, I think she is insightful, a genuinely talented host but…
The Helen I saw last night was the old Helen. She was very upbeat and did a great job. I think she was sick last week.Last time I saw her,she was getting married. I know, that was a while ago.I just watched last week because of this thread. Glad Helen is OK.
Helen probably was sucking on a mint. The other night she kept drinking from a mug. Am assuming it was water. It was distracting. She seemed nervous. I like her and agree she need some mentoring.
I love Helen. She seems more real than any other host. HOWEVER, I totally totally know what you mean. She says "you know" so much! And sometimes I get the feeling she is sucking on a mint or something. I don’t want to trash her because as I said, she seems like the more genuine host on the show. There is nothing phoney about her. I hope she continues to improve! Funny, I wondered if I was the only one that picked up on that! lol
I watched Helen on 10 Favs last night. She did not stutter at all. However, she would start a sentence and not finish. She only seemed comfortable presenting Carol’s Daughter. Wonder what happened. I remember when she presented with Guy in the morning show and she seemed more confident. Felt bad for her.
Helen is a raw talent, but she has to be more disciplined as a host. She also needs to study what other hosts do and prepare more for her shows. I saw much of her show with Nicky Butler and then some of Lynn Murphy’s show with him. Lynn did a far better job. Butler tends to interrupt the host, which is not a problem, but Lynn knew how to handle it better than Helen. Helen also didn’t ask him to describe the pieces, which he clearly wanted to do. I love watching Helen and believe she can relate to HSN’s core viewers better than many hosts they have, but she needs to be more disciplined, as I said, and study her craft a bit more. I’m no expert, but as a viewer that is my take.
Were I in charge at HSN, I’d put her in host boot camp with Bill Green as her coach and groom her for a weekly show that suits her personality. Once I decided what the focus and format would be, I’d do mock shows in order to hone her presentation and all the mechanics of the show. For a short time, Helen did a bit of talking to her producer during the show, but that seems to have stopped (I don’t get to see her shows that often). Is there an unconventional show they could develop that might work for HSN’s viewers and actually sell products?
I believe Helen is a talent very worth developing and superior to many who’ve graduated to day or prime-time spots (not that they aren’t worthy of their promotions or good in their own right). HSN needs to develop her unique, raw talent. She is not a cookie-cutter host or a typical talent, but I believe she has something different and appealing to their core viewers to offer. HSN is adding "appointment viewing" with Be Jeweled, Adam’s show, Beauty Report, and The List. I keep thinking Helen would be good on a Friday late-afternoon or evening show to kick off the weekend selling with a bang.
CEO Mindy is a genius in the way she’s rebranded HSN. I wish she’d take a look at this and see how she can use Helen better. Again, I’m no expert, but as a viewer that’s what I’d like to see done.
I can say this because I am a stutterer, which is mostly under control. Stuttering can start at any time in our lives.
Many people can keep it under contol until we get excited, scared, stressed, exhuberant even epilepsy can cause it to start suddenly.
And as I said it can start at any time, you may or may not be born with it.
Just try to look past it. Please.
