"I don’t DO social media"
I’ve been confused for a long time. There have been so many “I don’t do social media” comments since I’ve been here. I hate to break it to ya, but the HSN Community IS social media. All forums are. Sure, u can hide more on a forum, but it is still social media.
I like Instagram and Twitter. I don’t have Facebook, but my friends and family have posted pictures of me on there for years. I don’t care. What’s somebody gonna do? Steal my photo and pretend to be me and catfish someone? That would be their problem, not mine. And what difference does it make when my name and photo are all over the Internet wo my consent from work, school and ballet?
Instagram and Twitter are really cool – totally different than what y’all are saying about FB.
I quit facebook years ago. During the last presidential campaign. I had never seen so many disgusting and racial comments. I shut it down. The only social media I am on now are these boards, and Q. Never tried instagram or twitter. I never understand why people put so much of their information on line.
I’m not on Facebook or Twitter, but you would be surprised how much information there is out there about little ol’ me. Just Google search your own name and see what comes up. It was a shock to me to find my ex-husband’s first wife’s name connected with my info. Also, your age is clearly visible for anyone to see. Anytime you have every posted with your real name, been on Ebay, Amazon, etc., filled out a survey, signed up for e-mail or anything online, that information is stored in the cyber world and can be retrieved. It can be used for both good and evil. Watch what you post, for it can be used against you. Even your health records are available in certain situations! It’s unreal how little privacy there is these days. If you’re in an accident, someone will be posting your mangled image on Facebook before you’re even at the hospital.
One more thing…I did some research recently on a certain individual I was going to hire for some professional work. The man’s Facebook posts were disgusting and his language profane. There was no way I’d hire him!
Thanks for the feedback! Facebook sounds like a nightmare. My younger sister has never taken my advice to omit certain things I believe an employer would deem inappropriate.
Kemiqueen, I do not Instagram, tweet or facebook. It just all too much for me and I highly value my privacy. I would hope someone does not post my picture without permission.
It may be a generation difference.as my child is on snapchat, has a facebook and doesnt use it. In fact he missed stuff because ppl post parties and so forth on it.
I think there is a lot of oversharing and in some cases it is dangerous and/or can let those glimpse into your life, and you may not even know it. I researched Twitter for a school 501(c) and decided not to use it because of Security. Meaning people tweet activities at a location, and the possibility of who may show up.
I opended a facebook account and quickly closed it. Did I care the a College friend’s roomate had green cereal at St Pat for dinner? And took a pic of it! It also prompted me to upload my e-mail addresses for all to share ( i dint do it), including people who may own companies and try to sell to them. Same with a community yahoo groups created for neighborhood security shares, everyone tries to sell their business on it. I think it is great if someone asks but if not, it should be used for what it is intended.
Anyways, the HSN blog is fun for me and I learn about so much, especially from you!
When I cancelled/deleted my FB account, it was vague as to whether you were cancelling or deleting. I think it was temporarily cancelling, because they said everything would stil be there if I wanted to come back.
And all friends and family would not know that I was no longer on FB. So they can still post messages but it wouldnt tell them???? DUMB.
Oh and another thing I hated was all the friends of friends of friends who wanted to friend you just to get you to try to play their stupid games and give them Farmville animals, and candy crush whatevers! I never played a game on there, but I was getting so many friend requests who wanted game garbage, and game garbage requests!
I am not intending to go back, but could find no way of actually deleting everything, only temporarily cancelling.
Forums are permanent, unless the company shuts down their site.
“Mainstream” social media is not permanent, since u can delete your account.
I think you have to break it down a little further than this. “Social Media” entails advertising by companies you don’t care for. Of course forum discussions such as this are social media. The big distinction is what you can and not do on mainstream social media. Twitter, Facebook, et. al.
I do consider forums a type of social media, but not the like the other behomeths where you can make friends of other friends and so on. I suppose one can do a little of this on forums such as this, but not much.
“What’s somebody gonna do? Steal my photo and pretend to be me and catfish someone? That would be their problem, not mine. And what difference does it make when my name and photo are all over the Internet wo my consent from work, school and ballet? “
Social media is more than just stealing your likeness. Once we put info on the internet its there forever. Employers now check social media sites for their candidates before hiring them. It’s akin to the nude photos that have been hacked by some celebrities that have been shared around the world. It’s wrong, and there has been a great deal of alarm caused by hacking. Then there’s identity theft.
I shared hundreds of photos for relatives over facebook. Graduations of both my children and grandson. A graduation of my own, my work milestones and more. I came off facebook because it didn’t enrich my life. It made my life more complicated.
Of course, others will have different outcomes. So, no I don’t do mainstream social media anymore.
I have said for a long time now that HSN forum is as social media as I get.
I used to be on FB but I hated it. Everyone trying to outdo everyone else. And I would get 100s of email a week from FB telling me what everyone was doing! And I tried to stop them, so I finally just deleted the account. And am muchhhhhh happier now.
True some here try to outdo the others, but mostly in the games and just for fun. If the posting tries to outdo others, I just don;t read their posts and avoid their threads. Too much drama! I do not need drama in my cyber life right now! I have enough drama in my real life with my health!
