Whirlpool LED Lights TS1/5/16 Item 459443 "Not suitable for use in ENCLOSED Luminaires (FIXTURES)."
I purchased the above TS. During the on air presentation, we were told it was safe to use the bulbs in enclosed light fixtures. As a matter of fact, at 8 minutes 11 seconds in the presentation, a lady is replacing regular light bulbs with Whirlpool LED Light bulbs in her enclosed ceiling fixture. In addition, the product feature page on the HSN’S website states "Versatile-can be used anywhere indoors that you’d use traditional incandescent or CFL bulbs." After receiving the bulbs and replacing bulbs in enclosed ceiling fixtures, I noticed a CAUTION on the side of the light bulb box. it states " Not suitable for use in totally enclosed luminaires(fixtures)." The ceiling fixture shown in the presentation is a totally enclosed fixture. I removed the bulbs and attempted to contact the company. After 5 days and 5 messages on their voice mail, they have not returned my calls. I have reached out to customer service (see post in customer service) and I am still waiting for a response from HSN buyers. In the meantime, I have done my own research. If we use these bulbs in a totally enclosed fixture, the bulbs could short out and may even cause a fire. This is serious. I am disappointed in the lack of response from ETI Lighting. They are not returning my calls for a customer service question, I can only imagine their response if I have a warranty issue. I am worried others will do the same and install bulbs in an enclosed fixture. I am thankful I read the caution on the box. Please HSN, take action on this. Please review your video which is still up on the product page. Please notify those who bought the bulbs of the dangers of using in an enclosed fixture.
I have returned my bulbs and canceled my autoships. It is unfair to charge return postage when this is clearly a dangerous and serious misrepresentation of the product.
Update- HSN added "Not suitable for use in totally enclosed luminaries (fixtures)" on the item description page. I hope they contact those who bought the TS.
I found brand name LED bulbs at my local hardware store. They were on sale ($10 off) 4 bulbs for $11.99. Suitable for use in totally enclosed fixtures. For just over $130, I replaced all the bulbs in my house. This debacle was a blessing in disguise.
Jmc never thought of that. Circuit breaker should kick off before a fire…….Ronnie
You really had me thinking about these light bulbs.
Looked around my house and hubby did change all the bulbs to LED.
Majority are in an open fixture.
Their are many enclosed,too.
I was thinking???Wouldn’t the fuse blow if they overheat?
Therefore, I wouldn’t have to worry about a fire?
Anyways,I will say my electric bills have been drastically reduced
with these bulbs.Just hope we are safe.
I’m so glad that I read these post about LED bulbs before buying them! Well I hope nothing happens to the people that have purchased them, that surely would be afoul! I hope every read these post and doesn’t buy them or returns the ones they have!
It’s a shame that so many products are being made and promoted as new and improved on and off TV are not up to standards and come with restrictions of use. It’s even worse that you don’t find out about the restrictions or possible safety hazard ontil you have the product in hand……Ronnie
I am not worried about my return because I am covered by VIP return shipping promotion. However, I am sure there are others who didn’t use an HSN card and will get stuck paying return shipping. More importantly, I am worried about others who are unaware and installed in an enclosed fixture. The hazards are real and there is a warning for a reason.
Not sure what I did with my original reply. When we switched over to LED in our entire home recently, I asked my Husband about a few of our enclosed fixtures after reading our boxes. We bought them in a big hardware store. I forgot about this and they’ve been in there for about 3 months. :womansurprised: My Husband may be in the doghouse! lol. I’m going to do some research and follow your thread. Not worth a fire! I LOVE the bright lights though as I get depressed when my surroundings are dark. Hope you get this cleared up! I’m going to bed or I would go see if the two enclosed fixtures that have been on all day are hot.
Interesting! I watched some of these presentations and while I can’t pinpoint exactly when, heard some mention of essentially using these bulbs in ALL types of fixtures. I thought, I’ll bet that is not correct as I had just gone to the Orange colored Big Box Home Repair place to replace a compact fluorescent bulb. When looking at LED bulbs, they ALL had that warning printed at the base of the bulbs but not all carried that warning on the boxes…I questioned several employees about this and none of them had even noticed that warning on the bulbs. I did buy a box of the new styled LED light sticks…the top didn’t get too warm but that base indeed gets pretty darned warm…have never noticed that before. I did put one in an enclosed outside fixture (front porch) with this note…right now, even in SoCal we have been pretty cool and that we are not leaving it on, just letting the dog out for 2 or 3 minutes and then it’s turned off…I’ll consider replacing it when the weather warms. Good luck to those making returns.
Thank you Susie and thank you to the other posters here for their responses. Like Oldpixie I was tempted to buy the bulbs and now happy that I passed. It says a lot for Whirlpool when they have them manufactured in another country and sell them here. It really stings that the company and the customer service isn”t responding. I think southern lights did us a service here with her warning that HSN should have done. Her warning may just have saved someone a serious problem…….Ronnie
That should be clear in the description..I wondered about the point of Auto-Ship.It they last 20 plus years why would one need auto ship.I am very leary of new types of light bulbs due to a possible fire danger.
That is an important piece of information to be left out of presentations. And the fact that you are not hearing back from the company or HSN is suspicious. I hope people that bought these are paying attention to your post. Thanks for sharing this info Southernlights. And for doing the research to be sure of your facts for everyone. It may save someone for a tragedy.
I was so tempted to order these light bulbs. I did see that warning in the product information. I also saw the on air demostration and saw the lady installing them in the ceiling fan too. This is an issue of false advertising in the video as the warning was in the description and demostrated being used in a dangerous way per the warning. Since most of my fixtures are enclosed I passed on ordering them.
I certainly hope that this matter is resolved to your satisfaction. You should not be charged shipping to send them back. Thankfully you did see the warning before you installed them.
Great information Susie, thanks.
