Could you imagine if there were some kinds of beings, whether mammal or something other, higher on the food chain than human beings? We would live in perpetual fear of being roped, branded, tortured, and eaten! I can’t conceive of some other being, chopping off one of your prized organs and sauteing it as a tasty morsel and then releasing you back into the world as a living impediment. Could you imagine! As nature has it, humans are the highest on the food chain.
Here we have huge spring calf round ups where are the neighbor families and ranches get together to help. The calves are branded, vaccinated, dehorned and castrated. There are literally buckets of "oysters’. After the work is done we enjoy the potluck lunch and of course the oysters. So it is a different sort of meal for sure.
We would have a steer butchered every year and the processor always gives you the variety meats. I must say some are much better than others, but nothing was wasted ever. One year the man asked us if we wanted the brains. My brother piped up " Yes, I would. I never had brains". It was hilarious at the time and he couldn’t live it down for quite a while. LOL
i’m in CO (rocky mountain oysters) and I wouldn’t want to try them. My parents used to eat all those yucky things too!! The only thing I ever tried was kidneys in brown gravy–was good but you sure had to soak them to get rid of the smell and they were still pretty strong tasting. Haven’t had them in over 20 yrs and don’t want to mess with them anymore!!
In PA we have our own line of food that might make you want to pass on. Like pickled pigs feet, souse, and blood sausage. Stuff I couldn’t even look at let enough try. But my parents loved the stuff……Ronnie
They are also called Calf Fries…in the Texas area….. not interested. And I live here. LOL
My Grandmother called them Lamb Fries.
Never ate them and never will.
Also sweetbreads-glands, from the neck, tongue, nasty stuff.Pigs feet and knuckls, ugh!
We live in New York State.
Buffalo balls are Rocky Mountain Oysters. They are sold out west as far as I know….Ronnie
