Why is Hirkimer so expensive?
Is Hirkimer prettier in person? I am not understanding the cost. Am I missing out on something. I have never purchased any.
It’s all natural, so each piece is unique! So it may not sparkle like Absolute, but it does sparkle and it’s beautiful! Just try one piece that you can afford, and you will see for yourself! Herkimer is beautiful in its natural beauty! I think you are missing out! Just get one pieece! I have multiple pieces, and the sparkle is amazing!
I agree Herkimer is expensive! So I can’t afford every piece I want! BUT I love it for it’s spiritual aspect! And that its natural! Plus, I Love Deb!
Herkimers are a specific variety of quartz crystal that are mined in upstate New York. They can be differentiated from other clear quartz crystals in that they are double terminated with each crystal coming to a point at each end. This is a rare quality in that there was little or no contact between the Herkimer and Dolostone, the host rock. Dolostone was formed about 500 million years ago and the Herkimers were first discovered and prized by the Mohawk tribe and early German settlers in America.
While it’s true that quartz is the most common mineral found around the world the double terminated ones are rare. Some Herkimers have liquid inside due to the way they were formed. Unlike other quartz stones, Herkimers are a 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale compared to diamonds that are a 10. This makes them more durable than other types of quartz.
Herkimers typically have 18 naturally occurring facets and are said to be clearer than other quartz stones. Diamonds don’t have a particular form and need to be cut and polished.
Quartz stones are prized in metaphysical circles for their harmonizing ability to enhance and purify thoughts. In addition to these qualities, Herkimers are thought to help with dream recall, to assist in addiction recovery, and with the removal of spiritual toxins. They are also purported to assist with balance and with helping you become attuned to your environment.
Lastly, the Herkimer mines offer tours of the mine where you can mine your own Herkimers. I’ve been lucky to visit the mines…it’s a great and fun family trip!
So you are paying for the unique Herkimer stones, the silver and Deb’s designs!
The difference to me is that the Herkimer line here some natural stone shapes, which I like.
I agree. I love Deb Guyot ‘s designs but I can’t tell the difference between Herkimer and regular clear quartz. I think it’s overpriced.
Oh Maasha! Fabulous post. Loved your point. Buy what makes you happy and smile! I think that’s one of the most special joys in life. No one has to like what you spend money on but you. I buy things in my home and surround myself with odds and ends and art that are strange to many but make me smile. My prize possession is a Casablanca poster in color that is worded in French. I found it in an off beat thrift store on a road trip. Its not expensive but it makes me smile as does my other priceless knick knacks. So your herkimers truly are priceless to you because there really is no price for happiness.
i love love love my Herkimers. my favs are the long necklaces that layer so nicely with so much. and the lightweight yet substantial earrings. i buy TS and clearance.
the value of jewelry is emotional. it is not a need. most of it is for self adornment and the love of beautiful things. only extremely high end and a few unusual collectibles would be considered investments.
this line is not big and flashy. it is more subtle yet sparkly and plays well with others. i always take my Herkimer when i travel.
Personally, I LOVE my herkimers. They look like little pieces of ice and they shine and sparkle and are so very different and pretty. I especially like the ones that are cut into those little icicle shapes that were the TS a couple times. They are very pretty.
But they ARE quartz, mined in Herkimer, NY. I like that too. I used to live in the general area.
It is generally very hard to see what costs how much. For example, most Heidi Daus is outrageously expensive for what it is – mystery metal and rhinestones. But go on ebay and see for yourself how much the older pieces can fetch! AND it is so very pretty. So is a completely non-precious necklace worth $300? Looks like a lot of people think so.
Now, take Jay King. What exactly are we buying? How much is it worth? Is it worth it? I don’t know.
Now, take regular diamonds. Why are THEY so expensive? Because of DeBeers’ monopoly. Are they worth it? Hard to tell. Would you be able to sell them? For how much longer?
Now, the Herkimer quartz. Is it worth it? Full price, I don’t think so. the TS price – for me not sure, but I kept the earrings and the necklaces, and I got an extra one for my sister who was really very much in love with it ("like little pieces of ice!"), and I am glad, very glad I did. When the earrings came as the TS again – this time as a hoop – I jumped on it right away. Because they are so very pretty and unusual. Will I be able to resell them? Probably not, but I will probably lose them before it comes to that. Every time I glance at them, I smile. Maybe I overpaid some for them. But you know what, I overpay for a lot of things. Airlines charge me for checked in bags. Our cafeteria at work overcharges me. The government overcharges me in taxes and fees. The Cable company and the cell phone company are robbing me blind! I sure like these earrings and these necklaces way more than I like the IRS. Just saying.
So I guess what I am saying it – jewelry prices being what they are, it is rather subjective. Personally, I am in love with some of the pieces. And so is my sister. I cannot possibly tell you that you would like it quite as much. Try this phrase in your head "Like little sparkly pieces of ice" – does that sound like something you’d like?
Thank you all for your answers. I love being able to post a question and get answers. This community site is nice. Can’t say the same about QVC. They can be brutal.
Veniceshopper, you are so right. I used to like Colleen Lopez for informative and constructive presentations. Lately, whenever I accidentally catch her shows it’s OOOOHHH! AAAAHHHH!!! Exaggerated exclamations and not much more… Good thing, I have no brand or host loyalty whatsoever.
I am surprized my first comment was not yet removed from this thread. :smileywink:
Its probably expensive because of Colleen Lopez endorsements. No doubt I would think it likely she gets something for promoting this very simple inexpensive quartz material.
These are very nice and shiny pieces that I like as fun, casual wear, which fits my lifestyle. The line is overpriced, but so many lines are overpriced. Jewelry is in general overpriced anyway, right?
The silver in this line can be thin, so not one of your more solid types of lines. I still like the pieces I have purchased.
Herkimer is in the same family as quartz lower end of the gem stone family. In fact the Herkimer quartz is mined up state New York. I have a 5k Herimer ring set in a 14k setting that I purchased at my local dept store at a very, very reasonable price. It is a clear stone but it does not look like a diamond to me. The ring is pretty and I do wear it. Whenever I am in doubt concerning a purchase I look on other sites including my local dept storeand make my decision from there.
Perceived value pricing. Just like a lot of cosmetics are marketed.
In short words- NO, it is not worth the price, even on deep clearance.
In longer words…. Ouch. Ok, some businesses are playing with patrtiotic feelings of some customers. I hope it sounds politically correct, nevertherless – clear.
