Wedding Guest Outfit Opinions Please
I have purchased an outfit from HSN I wanted to wear to a wedding, but I wanted some opionions to see what others thought. Just for the record I am only 5 feet tall wear a pretty small size and I am 42 years old (perpetually single).
I purchased the Liz Lange Maxi Dress in the Black and White, along with the matching chiffon cardigan. I just purchased today the Jay King Tourmalated Quart Necklace. I plan on buying some low Red heels for a pop of color.
What do you think? Too much black and white for a summer wedding?
Thanks for your honest opinions. Oh,and thanks to Cindy for her helpful post to someone somewhere on how to insert pics of the products here! (I probably would have figured it out if I had thought about it, but thanks for not making me think, I do enough of that for work!) :smileyhappy:
Hi Sophia…I agree with Rachel. The necklace is lovely but will be lost on the print of the dress. I think shorter is better with the V Neck. Something that you will see and not miss. HOWEVER, I did notice that the necklace could be doubled. So that is an option that you have. But I wouldn’t wear it long.
If you do decided to go for the “red” pop of color, use it in your handbag, shoe, and maybe a bracelet. Don’t over do it. And MAYBE an earring. I myself love the idea of a classic black and white look. You didn’t say if this was a day or evening wedding…for day, I would add the red, for evening, I would add black.
The other option that I would like to throw out there is perhaps something in crystal…something faceted that would give you a little sparkle…NOT this one…but just to give you an idea…
The beads are faceted to reflect light. In red, if you go that way, black or even a clear would be pretty. You have lots of options. but again…if you decided to use your Jay King, you could still wear it…just double it. That would work.
I like your choices, as well! I personally wedges or platform would be a good option for the
wedding! Agreeing with Rachel, simple but elegant is the ticket, gold or silver necklace and
earrings, 16-18 inch necklace! Love this print, and I am 5 feet as well, I would use chiffon
cardigan separately, maybe all white or all black (tank and slacks) then with the necklace!
The whole weekend can be black and white! Have a great time!
I think each item you’ve chosen by itself was a great choice. They are all very versatile and I think you’ll get much use out of mixing and matching them in your wardrobe. However, I am going to break rank with most of the posters here as to how you plan to wear them. Please know, Sophia…that I post this ‘only’ as an opinion and not at all as a criticism in any way when I say that to wear ALL those pieces together is entirely too much pattern upon pattern upon pattern. And to then add all the red as in shoes, purse, wrist, hair, scarf…and yet another red necklace is piling on and taking away from the beauty of the dress you’ve chosen. You are just 5′ tall and a small size. You will totally eclipse yourself in so much busy pattern and overdone red accessories.
Here’s is what I would suggest:
Your dress has a gorgeous neckline and wonderful cinching at the midriff and in fact can stand alone with simple accessories. I myself wouldn’t add that top to it unless you fear weather may not be permitting to do otherwise, and here’s why. You are adding so much pattern upon your tiny frame, that I fear it will make you even shorter, and will become dizzying.
However if you want to add the top, you need to be veryyyyy careful not to continue adding and adding accessories in another color. That dress will be so flattering on your frame. If you want to add red you need to add it sparingly. Perhaps as someone suggested…in a flower in your hair, and then maybe something red on you wrist. If you do that, then you need an earring in either a simple black or black/white or black/crystal drop and black heels.
I personally wouldn’t do red shoes with that dress unless very high and very strappy, but I do understand that isn’t something you can do right now, so…if you still must have your red shoes, then I think you could still do something red in your hair and on your wrist…but please don’t overdo it with all the other accessories in red. That is just way too much going on in one outfit all at one time, and at your height with all that pattern… your ‘pop’ of color should come from…and would be so much more outstanding in your hair or on your wrist! You want to elongate your look, not cut it off.
I also love your Jay King necklace but (and here is where I totally break rank with others)…under NO circumstance would I 1) wear it together with all the other black/white of that outfit…2)add yet ‘another’ necklace to it in red…nor 3) with that particular dress. The necklace is entirely too long…too similar in pattern…and the wrong style for the dress. You need to look at the beautiful V-neck and shoulder line of that dress. It is simply beautiful. Any necklace of the sort you have will break the lines of the dress and hang from your neck ‘downward’ in between the V of the dress. If anything, I would suggest something much shorter…perhaps in either clear crystal or black…maybe 16" max…and very dainty so as not to compete with the boldness of the print of the dress nor with the lines of the bodice of the dress.
All in all….I would not return any of the pieces you purchased. The Jay King would look fabulous with your top and a white crop pant and black shoes later on…just not all together at the wedding with the dress you’ve chosen. Just let the dress stand on its own and set it off with simple accessories.
Just remember…sometimes ‘less’…is ‘more’!!
Then…go to your wedding and just be GORGEOUS!!! :smileyhappy:
I am petite too and with the maxi dresses I seem to need a higher heel that elongates the dress line. I usually make the shoe blend in.
Looks very nice for a wedding. I like the idea of laying necklace with pop of red. Only comment about the shoes would be to consider if it’s an indoor or outdoor wedding. I have a heck of time walking in any heel on grass and would opt for flat pump. Red is a great choice.
Sophia, I like that dress, and that it is so versatile. I don’t believe that would be too much black and white, although I’m not sure about the matching cardigan (addressed below). Red does look very good with black & white. See that tank underneath the matching cardigan you posted? That would be a beautiful summery color as well.
Then again, veniceshopper brings up a very good point about the print possibly being busy enough already without injecting another element, of color. So you may want to wear the dress to the store when you try on shoes and look for accessories. I have done that before, it saves time and frustration. Also, "shop your closet", you may have a pair of black strappy shoes, for example, that would look perfectly fine. However, I agree with you about platforms.
If you do go for a pop of color, I wouldn’t overdo it. You don’t need, for instance, red shoes, red handbag AND red jewelry, red hair accessories, etc.
A black or colorful, lightweight, cropped 3/4 sleeved cardi/shrug was my initial thought for the dress, if you feel you need one. I’m a bit concerned about the length of the matching cardigan, have the items arrived yet? I mention this because I noticed in the reviews that a couple customers who described themselves as "petite" and "on the short side" felt the cardigan was too long on them. So one of them decided to have the cardigan shortened, the other is contemplating it.
Above everything else, HAVE A GREAT TIME!
Everything is nice, plus a red live or silk flower in the hair, down or updo – CAT’s MEOW!
If it was me…I would keep the black and white theme. A black sandal and a long strand of pearls to elongate. The print and jacket have alot going on and keeping the colors in the same colors I think is an elegant look for a wedding. Also some pearl earrings. I wore a similar outfit and got alot of compliments. Just my input but I am sure you will look great any way you decide to accessorize. I prefer simple but that’s me. The dress and the chiffon jacket are the focal points. As a shorter height person black shoes would elongate you too. I love the dress. Have a fabulous time!
Nice choice, I wore a Liz Lange dress last year to a college graduation the leopard version with the matching scarf. I was complimented so many times. You will look great!
I think it will look great. But why not go with a higher heel with your petite size? I am 5’2" and I where as high a heel as I can! lol
I think you made a great choice with the Liz Lange maxi dress. And maybe it’s just me, but red, white & black has always been my go-to combination. Maybe layer the necklace with another with red beads, add a red bangle bracelet, and carry a red purse. You can always tie a red scarf to your bag, depending on it’s size. Your red shoes are perfect. Turquoise would be my next choice to up the wow factor of B & W. I’m only 5’2" so I understand the challenges in finding great pieces that don’t make you look like you’re standing in a hole next to everyone else! You’re going to look fabulous Sophia!
