Plus Size Fashions
Who is the best designer for plus size women? I like Diane Gilmore but her sizing is all over the place and I hate returning things and paying shipping when it isn’t my fautl. I also like Slinky. I got Iman’s TS last time and it didn’t do at all. I also got her fringe jacket and it is a little too short for hippy girls like myself. Which designer knows our problem areas and tries to hide them best?
I have not tried Melissa McCarthy’s line because it is too expensive so I cannot speak to that. I like the same lines you do – – DG2 and Slinky. I am with you, though, Diane’s inability or unwillingness to get her sizes in line is very upsetting. I do not buy from her like I once did. I do like Anthony but his sizing is off sometimes too. Frankly it is a bit iffy all the way around these days with regard to HSN’s clothing lines. I really hate to say that but the truth is I spend a fortune on return shipping now that there is a limit set on return shipping reimbursement. I also do not even get all the taxes all back. That hurts given the fact sizing issues are not the customer’s fault. They are quality control problems. I hope you find a line that works for you. There is no question that HSN offers some beautiful options. If they just got their sizing issues fixed, there would be no stopping them.
I didn’t realize there was a limit on return reimbursments. What is it? I always get a lot of help from customer service so I think from now on when I return something because of size issues that aren’t my fault, I will call first. Thanks!
You might want to take a look at Marla Wynne. During Marla Wynne’s last visit, the lion’s share of her on-air time was spent on the Plus Project with guest Maddie. FYI, HSN prices Marla Wynne on the high side. Be sure to check the garment measurement chart before ordering. Sometimes a Marla item can be true-to-size, sometimes oversized. Melissa McCarthy features plus size, also priced on the high side by HSN. But better to own fewer high-priced pieces that fit and look great! Which leads to the next issue …
Sizing inconsistencies have become a big problem for me at HSN. If vendors and hosts would give some size guidance in the presentations, it would go a long way. I watch the online video to try to figure out what size to order. It drives me nuts that they can go on and on about the various places you can wear a garment (“to carpool, to soccer games, to the market, out to lunch with the girls!”) and how “cute and adorable!” it is, but nothing about specific size/fit information. I, along with others, have been complaining about this for YEARS. (Is anyone listening?)
Anyway, Pam, I hope you find what you’re looking for! 🙂
I myself am a plus size and I think Slinky and Antthony both have superior style for the larger woman. I am never dissappointed with either line and most of my closet consists of their clothes. Diane Gilman likes those boat neck tops A LOT and they don’t do anything for a heavy bust. I have some Diane Gilman and I wear the colored jeans to work usually paired with something from Slinky or Antthony. Good Luck!
MarlaWynne. Her flatter fit pants tend to run a size larger as do her tops. They are more expensive than other lines but the fabrics used are incredible. They wash well and dry well. I’m an overweight petite due to meds and her line has been my salvation particularly for those times that I need to dress well. Her clothes travel well too.
I’m starting to lose weight slowly but luckily I purchased a few versions of her flatter pants in a few different sizes from the size 6 that I used to wear before meds to the size 18 that I wore a few months ago. It was very difficult to find clothes that I felt decent in while so overweight. Now I add a Heidi parure and a great handbag to Marla’s clothes and I’m good to go while feeling confident. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you Marla Wynne and Heidi Daus…Happy Mother’s Day to you both!
Pamlou, I wear a lot of Serena around the house and to run errands. I hope you find some lines that work for you! Thank you HSN for carrying Marla’s line!
Ditto on Marla Wynne Collection. And there are some great clearance items right now!
Do you mean Diane Gilman? I can’t wear that many jeans. She does have some nice tops though. When Queen Latifah was here her line was for larger gals.
Off topic: Does anyone remember Kelly Repassy who used to do the curvy shows? I adored her as a host.
Topic: Maybe, Melissa McCarthy?
I would highly recommend MarlaWynne. Her collection is so well made. It’s not cheap but with specials and clearance you can build an impressive wardrobe. Her designs are mostly wardrobe basics with some amazing pieces that tie everything together. Some of her clothes are actually made in the USA. I’d try to pick up a couple of clearance items to see the quality for yourself and get a fix on the sizing. She tends to run to the big side. If you love jewelry or silk scarves, her designs are the perfect showcase for those. I wear Heidi Daus jewelry and her simple classic lines really work with my jewelry. Happy Shopping!
Great question! I am a size 16 or 1X in brick and mortar stores. I possess an ample tummy, hips and thighs, but stand only 5’3″. A challenge, but not an impossibility. Through trial and error, I have had success as follows:
I favor 3 brands; Slinky , Antthony (I take xl in these lines) and Marla Wynne (usually a large in this line.) Marla has lots of tricks to fool the eye. The jackets and sweaters with high slits on the sides are a priceless trick and so very flattering! These three designers tend to use forgiving fabrics and relaxed fits. Anything with ruching or draping helps disguise lumps and bumps. Good fit stars with good underpinnings, so I am diligent about lingerie fittings. I do these in person so I can be measured. It makes a big difference in how your clothes fit.
The great thing about HSN is their return policy. Also, the designers are on facebook and have been nice enough to correspond with me when I ask about garment specifics.
I hope this helps.
