Expensive vs cheap
I wanted to share this with you all since I too keep asking myself: what am I paying for when I buy so very expensive Heidi Daus? By way of demonstration, here are two kitties. One is a super exoensive Heidi cat, the other is an AliExpress cat that looks like an exact replica of a JTV Off-Park cat. The Off-Park’s is about $40, the AliExpress varies by retailer; possibly, $7 and free shipment. I had to cut the pink kitty’s tail off for better picture.
And even in an imperfect picture like this one, it becomes very visible. While the pink Ron Swanson kitty princess is adorable in its own right, everything about her is infereior.
1). Heidi’s cat is super detailed; notice all the muscle and shoulder bones and everything, it ‘s is a very decent sculpture. Ron Swanson princess is far less detailed.
2). Overall, Heidi’s piece is all a graceful curve. Ron Swanson – not so much.
3). Pink kitty has inferior rhinestones; Heidi’s – better crystal. In person, it is very noticeable. The shine and glimer of Heidi’s cat is far more.
4). Not sure if this is going to pan out like that, but Heidi’s looks like the crystals are embedded into the kitty better and will last longer.
5). Heidi’s is thicker, for what it’s worth.
On the other hand, consider this:
That site has tons of pretty items, including things that would make nice handbag charms. So… you feel you can trust aliexpress with credit card information? (Wish they took Paypal.) I am tempted to buy something.
Thanks Velveteen, Her pieces are very lovely.
Does Heidi ever do pieces in silver? I can never find any information on what metals she uses.
Fairemaiden, I viewed the website this morning (never heard of it…being nosey) and your right, the merchandise does look cheap. What a slap in the face to the GREAT DESIGNERS. Guess they want to imitate the GREAT ONES! Designers such as: Heidi, Butler, etc. put their heart and soul behind their merchandise….and it shows. Your sweet to "WARN" all not to purchase. And it will probably fall apart in no time! You pay for the QUALITY when people buy right. But all have their opinion.
massha… I had never heard of this place before, (AliExpress), so, went over to take a look. I scrolled thru 7 of their umpteen pages of Fashion Jewelry Pins and all I can say is NO NO NO. It’s JUNK. My eyes were burning after 7 pages, *lol*.
I’m sorry, massha… but they are cheap imitations, (and lousy ones at that), of the high-end Costume Jewelry we’ve come to know and love. The UTTER lack of quality, design, attention to detail, and high-end craftsmanship is just appalling. APPALLING I tell you! I know I’m dating myself, but I would expect to find this kind of crap in a Five & Dime store. It’s ‘junk jewelry’… ‘throw-away’ jewelry.
I can see people of very limited means buying this stuff. In my much younger days, I would have too. And, while I’m always looking to save a buck, I would not lower myself to being caught dead in such junk as this just to do so. As my mother used to say, ‘I wouldn’t wear that to a dog fight’, *lol*. Yes, she taught me well the difference between ‘junk’ and ‘worthy imitation’ in both jewelry & fashion.
I can afford the EXEMPLARY craftsmanship of Heidi Daus, and others of her caliber, and will continue to purchase such far-superior products.
You can also compare, Nicky Butler pins or brooches. His brooches are sterling silver and made with real gem stones. Compare his pieces with Hedi"s. Mr.Butler brooches are less expensive.
I like brooches that are less ornate and crafted in sterling silver and gem stones.
Opinions, are just that,My motto is buy what you like, even if other people opinions differ.
I figured the top one is the most expensive. It has more clarity and detail. It also looks like it weights more?
I like this game. :womanhappy:
Massha I like both of them but would probably by the one less expensive and buy more…Ronnie
Top one is real, expensive…..and the cat that was cheap, looks cheap, funny, odd and ugly
My guess is the bottom one is the $199! BTW, both of the cat pins are adorable.
After posting this I couldn’t help noticing how the pink cat looks like it is a stretched out picture of a far smaller cat, like the two cats are not on the same scale. Nope, no photosop here – they were honestly photographed side by side. They are pretty much the same size but the pink Ron Swanson princess kitty also has a movable tale that did not fit in the picture. Quite adorable, really.
DEAL R NO DEAL…..LOL…..Massha I would guess the top one is $199.99 and the bottom one is $6.99. Do I win? And if so, What do I win????? lol
On the topic of the last one though. I have been thinking. What is an actual cost of a necklace sold on TV? Even if that same or similar necklace can be bought for, say $5 on AliExpress. Well, for that same necklace to appear on HSN, it needs to go through a whole lot of a process. Please add whatever I am missing:
Before it gets TO HSN
1. The salary + benefits + applicable taxes of the person(s) who scout various sources for necklaces. this is a whole lot of work, and requires a professional to do it.
2. The salary + benefits + applicable taxes for eople who actually order, process all the info, package, etc.
3. The salary +all for secretary and other administrative support including people responsible for compliance with all laws and regulations;
4. Customer service
Then, HSN: all the people and equipment they need to pay for.
So in the end, the price of the AliBaba piece will be only a fraction of what you will pay…
BTW that necklace is the only one that you can find on Ali-Baba from guess-the-line. Most other pieces in the collab collection do not even have a real alternative. There are big statement necklaces, but none like the bigger longer pieces.
