Are Oldies No Longer Goodies?
Are a lot of old favorites being phased out in favor of celebrity designers, more expensive lines and trendy things? It feels like long term customers no longer count with HSN. Do they only want newer, hipper clientele? A lot of the new stuff is youth oriented and clearly inappropriate for the more experienced woman. I am 66 years old. I cannot wear the trendy stuff. My daughter would think I had lost my mind. Even old favorites are falling down on the job. DIane Gilman does not attend to her repeated fit issues. Slinky, Anthony and Iman are moving toward thinner materials that do not work on older, more imperfect bodies. Some of the designers we love are not seen as much as they use to be. LIke I said, I feel like HSN wants us “oldies” to get lost. Am I the only one feeling this way?
I saw a list the other day of things you shouldn’t wear if you are over 40. (I’m still looking for the over 70 list, but that’s a story for another day.) Anyway, I still wear alot of the things; t-shirts with funny sayings and colorful socks are two I remember (we over 40s plus 30 can’t remember long lists). I agree with the previous poster, if you are confortable in it and it makes you feel good, wear it. How awful to wear something trendy and still feel ackward. I think fashion designers just come up with gimmicks to try to outdo each other more that they take the female figure into consideration.
I’m also tired of seeing articles on the internet of who wore the fewest clothes to whatever event. There are little thumbnail news bites you can click on on my home page, and half of them are women in almost no clothes. I’m not out to censor anyone, but I don’t think every star or wanna be who shows up half naked ought to make the news for that reason alone. Color me an old fogey.
I just turned 66 Monday. I bought several cold shoulder outfits from Slinky. The whole time I was buying them (and wearing them) I was thinking I am too old for this. I also bought Iman’s 2 piece outfit that you could wear the top off the shoulders or on. Mine won’t stay up and I feel like I’m too old for that, too. Society has really done a number on women. I’m glad to see some of the limitations on women have been lifted. More need to go. I just wish I could wear something under the Slinky cold shoulder to cover the open area. Otherwise they are so cute.
I have never been one who has gone head over heals over any designer. I don’t care where my clothes come from. All that matters to me is if it fits and if I like it. I did buy several Anthony “swing” tops, I really like them and the reason I bought more than 1 was because you could smash it in a suitcase and couldn’t make it wrinkle. I bought one a few months back and it’s full of wrinkles. :smileysad: That is why I have no loyalty to a particular brand. I say buy what you like and what you feel comfortable in. It doesn’t matter what others think if you “feel” good in it.
I agree wu, CHARLIEK. Good post!!
I am looking for good quality.
I don’t shop Fashion here very often now.
If they were really up my alley, there’d b camo.
Times they are a changing! I so agree with you. So many of the celebrity brands are cheap, thin material. I miss cotton and cotton blend. Cotton prices are high and most Cotton you had to iron unless it was a blend. People don’t iron anymore . I too am marking the sales . Recently I received an online survey from HSN. From the questions it appeared that they were trying to define who their customer is and what type clothing/ items the customer wanted. How well educated the customer is. Did anyone else receive that survey it appears they are trying to appeal to a younger crowd which I cannot blame them for that since online shopping is bigger than ever. I have noticed a decline in quality from all top mall stores. Macy’s is closing hundreds of stores in my area because of online shopping . All of my Macy’s shopping was online. I now shop Belks and Kohl’s online. It’s simply easier to pick out and view clothes online . I have only been on HSN for about 18 months . Some of their clothes lines are actually better quality than mall department stores. But some items I ordered are terribly thin or stink with chemical smell. wish they would buy better quality material that does not stretch out of shape or sewing comes undone after washing even on gentle cycle .
Ditto on the Marla… just keep your eyes peeled for the clearance! You can really score big if you buy out of season.
But I do suggest you dress for yourself and not your daughter.
U hit the nail on the head, CHARLIEK, and I totally agree with your post. I’m sorry you and others feel left behind. You do have a valid point!
However, I’m on the opposite end of the spectrum and wish HSN would be more ON trend, since I prefer shopping off the television over going to the mall. I see that they are trying, yet they don’t even have a size 00. I would like to see some mini skirts, graphic tees, and bandanas.
Anyways, my point is, HSN isn’t winning me over either.
I have many oldies that have been packed away now they are in style. I can save money, just unpack wash and wear.
I have been buying my clothes from Lands End for years, never out of style, great quality, last for years . I’m 77 and still look good in these clothes.
? Nope, you are not alone. I’m feelin’ you 100%. Next week, God willing, I’ll be adding another candle to my birthday cake and although I feel good and proud of my age I am not happy with the clothes now available on HSN.
Back in the day we received quality for great prices. Now they’re selling not so great quality for high prices. To each his own but I’ll shop elsewhere for my clothes… And so glad that I still have quite a bit of the quality stuff before they, as you put it, fell down on the job, or left HSN.
This is long time concern and like it or not with celeberity comes the whole new fan base the people who never watched HSN but would watch Wendy W. or Serena W. That audiance would not know Randolph Duke from Maggie Sweet. Sorry its all about how many followers you can draw and that translates into sales. The master plan was to cash in from celebrity status. On a bright note we still get to choose how we spend our hard earned $$
I don’t know the answer to your question. I DO know that there is a trend to use celebrities as the “face” of a line and some claim they “assist” with the designs. I’d prefer a true designer/dress maker vs the “here today, gone tomorrow” faces but, it’s all about money and fame sells stuff.
As for the true designers that are on here: profit is King. You can’t sell a bajillion of something if the price is too high and quality DOES cost money. It’s not just here, though. I’m seeing junk in just about every store in the mall and hear/read numerous complaints about this specific issue in magazines/online/from women I know. The good stuff costs MORE than it used to but I don’t know why; maybe cost of material has gone up everywhere?
Hugs to you. I’m not an “oldie” per se but I know exactly what you’re talking about. I see it too.
I used to search the New Arrivals every day, sometimes and mark my favorite items so I would not miss them. Now I mark them so when they go on sale, I can purchase them, because at full price. I can not afford the and will not pay the high price for the items even using the flex pay. When clothing was to be aired on HSN, I used to stay up nights to make sure I was able to place my order before they were sold out. I believe there are many others that did the same, but now, I just wait for the clearance items due to the higher prices. I believe the other viewers on this post have said it all and feel the same way I do.
So disappointing. Seems good taste and classics are no longer the norm…everything is about ‘fun’ or ‘how fun’ and for me, it isn’t fun.
Will be so glad when the shark bite is out and cold shoulder can go along with it.
Just not for me.
Goodness how I miss good classic clothing like they had a few years ago.
Charliek, I am 58 soom to be 59. I find Melisa McCarthy and Marly Wynn extemely apppropriate for our ages. Well made, fit great and make our younger relatives envious that we are still cool at our age without being out of place. You are not lost, just need to step out and see what is out there for you! don’t make 66 old, have fun and still be totally apropriate.
