thanks again for the help
@scrapknitter if your computer is that old you are probably running Windows XP. Microsoft is no longer making updates for that system. (They did recently do an emergency safety update because of a really serious problem, but that is the first update they’ve done since they stopped updating XP several years ago.) You would be wise to buy a new computer, even if you need to get a cheap one. I’ve always had good luck with Dell computers. HP makes good printers, but I haven’t been impressed with their computers.
@scrapknitter These are 2 entirely different products. A simple way to explain it would be that Viper protects your computer from getting viruses and Fix Me Stick removes firuses from your computer. If your computer has a virus, Fix Me Stick might help. You probably won’t be able to install Viper while you have a virus unless it has a work around in its directions.
You didn’t say how old your computer is, so it’s a little hard to figure out why it might be crashing. Since you say you’ve had the Zeus virus, you might try downloading the free version of Malwarebytes and have it run a scan on your computer. You can then have it fix whatever it finds.
I use Norton Security for virus protection and Malwarebytes to scan for problems that Norton doesn’t pick up–none so far. Viper appears to be a good virus protection program. I considered it; but since I work with a lot of confidential data, I decided it wouldn’t meet my needs. It would be good for the average home user.
PC Magazine posted the following in its review of the Fix Me Stick:
If malware has made it impossible to install or run antivirus protection, the bootable FixMeStick can save you. But don’t ditch your existing antivirus; FixMeStick offers no real-time protection.
Hope this helps or that someone who has actually used the 2 products can post with more information.
