So, I will soon be activating my new Tracfone and transferring minutes from my old phone. I’m relocating to another state and wonder if I should keep my old number or get a new one. I’d prefer getting a new number in the area code where I will be living. Is it best to transfer the minutes first and then request a new number or does it matter? Will they charge extra for a new number? I called Tracfone customer service and only got vague answers as if the rep didn’t understand what I was asking.
That’s fantastic! You had it easier than my husband. They made him get a new sim card. Glad it went smoothly for you, especially dealing with a move as well. 🙂
So sorry for not replying sooner. Have been busy getting settled into my new home in a new state.
My flip Tracfone works well, but for searching the internet, I prefer my old Android phone which had more space on the screen. Things I do like about it are that I can answer the phone just by opening it, and can end a call by closing it, and the phone is better positioned to hear the person on the other end.
I first transferred my old number to the new phone with the help of TracFone’s customer service per your suggestion, RhemaJoy. When I wanted to get a new number in the area code where I now live, it honestly took less than a minute. All I had to do was call the TracFone number, follow the prompts, and turn off my phone. When I turned it on again, the new phone number appeared on my account.

Ok. So if you are wanting to transfer your minutes to the new phone I would suggest first get the new phone setup and first transfer the old number and minutes to the new phone. But be prepared, when you request the new number you could be in for a big tangled dance that could last for several days.
My husband got his track phone when he was living in another state before we were married. Last month he decided he wanted a local number instead of the old one. Well, they ended up making him get a new sim card.
When the new card came in the mail, he didn’t know how to switch out a sim card. When I came in the room, he was trying to pop open the phone where the sim card was. So, I removed the back for him and replaced with the new card.
However, he had damaged his charging port in the process. So I had to give him his Christmas present early … A new phone.
Unfortunately, his minutes he had with the old sim card had not been restored so when we activated the new phone and transferred the new number to the new phone he only received the promotional minutes for the new phone.
It took us a week to straighten it out and get all of his minutes back.
So, that’s why I say … First activate your new phone and transfer your old number and current minutes. Then you know you have all your minutes. After the new phone is all set up, then call to change the number.
If they require you to have a new sim card for the new number, I highly suggest getting a screen shot of your minutes from your account so you have proof. Because the old minutes may not show at first and you may have to hound them to have your minutes back.
I have kept my same Tracfone number for years..and about 5 different new Tracfones..I don’t want the hassle of notifying everyone of a new number..
I’ve done it all through Tracfone’s CS…….and never had any real issue with them on the phone.
Only once I needed to speak to a different CS rep that was difficult for me to understand..I do state to the rep at the start “have patience with me..I am old!:smileywink:..I am technology challenged and don’t rush me”.We got along just fine!:smileyhappy:
I have better service with my Tracfone here in the mountains..than my kids get with expensive plans when they visit.In a way I’m glad they have truble with reception here..they pay more attention to me and not their phone!:smileywink:
, when you ordered the new phone, did you order it for your new location/zip code? If so, the new phone should have a number in the phone with the new area code and phone number in it. You have the choice of keeping/transferring your old number and minutes to the new phone, or taking the new number and just transferring your minutes from your old phone to the new one.
If you change to the new number, you might want to call ALL your contacts from the old number and give them your new number before you transfer the minutes to the new number. If they don’t recognize the new number they may think it’s a telemarketer or prank call. Good luck in your new location!
I wish I could help you and I wish you good luck. I bought a TracFone a while back under the idea that I could easily call relatives in Canada from here in FL. Seems like I was wrong. Customer service is spotty at best. BTW– I’d keep my old number if you have a lot of cntacts. Again, I wish you good luck.
