Why does my hair keep turning yellow
I’m a beige platinum blonde. Love the color when it’s freshly done. Then soon after it keeps getting a yellowish tone…HATE IT!! I’ve tried several products to remove minerals from water, and also use Shimmer lights occasionally. I also switched brands of hair color. My daughter is a beautician, and she brings me products to help, but we can’t figure out why this is happening. She also stopped lowlites, because they fade and get brassy/yellow, so now I’m straight platinum. Loved the dimension of the lowlites, but it just makes my hair look even more yellow. I don’t know what else to try. I’m thinking maybe rinse with distilled water?? UGHH!
Reallly appreciate any tips here!! THX!!!
There is a Cheetos joke somewhere in there!
When I tried going platinum blonde from my very dark brown, I got this unbelievable bright yellow/orange color! Had to go to work in a scarf for three days 😀
I had the FUNNIEST conversation with Clairol support. Me: "my hair is yellow!!!" the Customer Service agent: "What color yellow? Schoolbus yellow? Pumpkin yellow"? I guess this is what hair color naturally turns into once you strip it of whatever color it was…
So my guess is, whatever color you use is a combo of a bleaching agent and an actual color; so the color put over the slightly bleached hair of yours washes out and the natural yellow comes through… In my rather limitedly informed opinion, you either need to refresh that extra color that goes over the lightener/bleaching agent more often – or just bleach it better.
Hmnm..Sometimes I wonder the same thing. But I think mine is coming from being colored.
Yes, I have dark brown hair. :womanhappy:
Appreciate the replies…but I’m a natural blonde, no brown whatsoever. In fact, my natural is almost platinum, so I color with a biege blonde so it won’t look silver. I don’t need to bleach. I don’t mix shades either. I use the use the lightest shade 12 A. Comes out beautiful, and is still very, very light. I’m just saying, in a few weeks, it takes on a yellowish cast…nothing near school bus yellow, or even lemon. Just loses that soft beige look. My daughter is a beautician as I mentioned, so she knows about colors, but we just can’t figure why it turns. I live in Florida…maybe sun, maybe the water??
What type of water do you have ? I know my water is very iron rich & turns my whites yellow, then a grayish color. Clearly I’m not wearing whites looking like that unless I’m digging in the garden & then I make sure to wipe some dirt on the front of the shirt as a distraction incase someone sees me !
And…what are you using to wash your hair? Have you tried using Wen?
It will not change the color of your hair. I use it & love it.
Well water here…but I have an up-graded water softner. I get my water tested, and there are ZERO minerals, including iron, when passing through this water softener. Otherwise, it’s high in Iron. The water was the first thing I suspected….so I drove my hubby crazy to check everything…all is working accuratley. Yes, I tried several different shampoos. Shimmer lights helps, but it can be a bit drying, so I like to switch off. The products I have to remove any water deposits don’t really help either. I will NOT use Wen. Wonder if the high heat from the blower is doing anything too.. I don’t use a flat Iron anymore either…my hair is too fine. .SIGHHHH
Chickenlady. To be honest I always had my blonds have re touches every 3 weeks. Being blond can and usually cost. In 2 weeks blond color fades and refuses to reflect light causing a yellow cast, your own natural blond will grow in 1 week and by week 2 it shadows causing drab and yellow brassy tones.
Water, medications ,sunlight and even some conditioners cause yellowing. ALWAYS USE A WHITE CREAMY SHAMPOO, NEVER ONE WITH COLOR AS THE COLOR IN SHAMPOO WILL GRAB ONTO YOUR BLOND-NOT GOOD-
See if your daughter will buy you Redken shampoo for blond, but always alternate with the shampoo for blond with a white creamy shampoo. Consider the 2 week re touch option.
Ok…so pull thru..or NO. My hair is just above shoulder length…medium.
I’m sooo excited for this help, I’m starting to cluck!!
Chickenlady1..I am a the lightest champagne blonde and use a 30 developer. I turned yellow too and have blonde hair naturally but not as light. Using a highlift blonde Ion brand with sensitive scalp developer of 30 stopped the yellowing. I don’t pull it through ever because its too long and breaks the hair.
Three years ago I has well water for 6 years and developed orange patches of cheetos color. The only solution even if your water is good as mine was is to buy a packet of this white powder made by Ion as well. Its usually next to the hair color. You mix it into the color. After the struggles with color I was relived it worked amazing. I wish I could remember the name of it but its Ion for sure and specific for preventing discoloration of blondes. Next time I go to Sally’s I will post it for you. But even with city water I turned yellow not orange. Highlift solved it completely and my hair is in better condition because I don’t color for at least 6 weeks unless I have a special occasion. Also I use a cleanser conditioner made by Herbal Essences and argan oil or coconut spray by organix to seal in color. I load my hair with oils right after when wet. Also as mentioned blonde hair must be covered up from sun. Or a leave in with spf. Could also be from chlorine from a pool or ocean water. Blonde hair is porous and absorbs everything. Good luck. I know its very frustrating because it took me a long time to figure it out. Even multiple visits to color at a salon didn’t work well. I definitely think I do a better job plus Ion is a better product than most salons unless you go to Aveda salons where its unreasonably expensive at least for me.
My friend is a hairdresser, she was wondering if you had used seltzer, club soda, which she uses on her clients rinsing twice with it, Hope this helps, stay warm and have a great day xoxoxo
Really appreciate the advice here!! To answer some questions, I only need a 20 vol. because my natural is considered white, so the 12 A is basically just a softer platinum beige, so I wont look gray. My hair started getting pearly white in my early 20’s. I then used to highlite those areas to cover it. Now it’s everywhere, so any blonde I use does the job. Loved adding lowlites now for dimension, but my daughter and feel, since they fade, they cause a brassy look. So stopped that, for now.
BeautyBoy, I’m very thank-ful to you for the tips, and I’ll do exactly as you said with the conditioner.
Veniceshopper, thank-you…I go to Sallys often…I shall look for the product you said, and see what else they have for blondes, like an spf, etc. I had an Argan oil (think Argan), but it had an orange tint to it, so I gave it to my youngest daughter. I don’t think I can leave an oil in my hair…it would be greasy?? But I use something my daughter got me, so I can comb it out when wet. It’s clear.
Thank-you tamrick…and yes I’ll post back. I plan on coloring it this week, but it’ll look great until about 2-3 weeks, so let’s see how it goes. So glad I posted here…you guys are awsome!!!:heart:
Veniceshopper..are you thinking of Gray Magic??
When you re-touch your hair color what percentage of gray do you have? An what volume of developer do you use? Does the color fade quickly ?
Definitely sounds like a chemical reaction. Try using a hairspray with a sunscreen, rinse with distilled, and once a week do a clarifying wash that removes metals. Redkin has one that I swear by. Lastly, is it maybe due to a prescription drug??? Just a thought…oh, and one more thought, wear a scarf outside to keep polution off. Every little thing can affect hair that is treated in this manner.
No chicken its a purple packet by Ion which is a white powder you add right into the color. If I pass by any time soon I will go in and get the name. They recommended it to prevent discoloration when I had the well water. I think you will probably find it at Sally’s. My sister has natural light blonde hair not dishwater blonde like me with alot of grey and uses a golden blonde. Its very pretty as I used the same but now I want the lightest champagne. Time for me to color but I feel kind of lazy these days. Hope you have some good news next week!
