Mani-Pedi ladies: Gel Manicures
What’s all the rage? Is this harsher on nails than traditional polish? I’m going away soon and though, I normally do my own nails or leave them bare, I want a manicure that’s going to last me my entire trip.
I believe gel manicures are much harsher on the nail than regular polish when done on a regular basis. However ? they last a long time, results are really pretty. Doing this once in awhile won’t do any damage. I say go for it! have a nice trip.:womanvery-happy:
Hello ladies! I use to get my nails done. Well, I will agree with a few of you stating how they damage the nail bed and the nails get real paper thin. “YES” this is so true. It must of taken my nails over a year to get right. Now, my nails are natural and very pretty. I WILL NEVER, NEVER HAVE NAILS PUT ON AGAIN! Still go and get manicures and pedicures to treat myself. But all NATURAL!
Now to hear something crazy……my sister-in-law (MS. THANG) who never even has an eyelash out of place goes and gets her toe nails manicured with acrylics just like the nails. Her toes are to die for…not really….but they are very pretty. NOT FOR ME!
Anyhoo Serenafan you have a wonderful, healthy, and safe trip!
?I have never had a gel manicure.
I hope that you have a wonderful trip!
Gel manicures are great in every way EXCEPT for the damage they do to your nail. Like acrylics, they damage the nail bed; it becomes paper thin and the same issues women have with having acrylics removed and growing out weak nails are the same issues you’ll have with gels (after doing them for a few months).
I DO get them when I travel or know I simply won’t have time to take care of polish issues (holidays, for example). The look good for 2-3 weeks but you can see the grow out and instead of “fills” you need an entire new manicure.
I allow mine to grow out once the need for keeping the manicure nice is gone. I just apply polish and cut the new growth off (or file). I had them removed once…. the scraping destroyed my nail bed. Never again.
I know there are those who get them every 2 weeks. Maybe they have much stronger nails than I; don’t know. They DO look amazing and they are dry as soon the residue is wiped off, you can’t destroy them, that’s for sure!!
Gel manicures typically last at least 2 weeks, sometimes even 3 weeks. Just depends on how fast your nails grow. Gel manicures give you that fresh, shiny, just had my nails done look the entire time. The polish rarely chips and remains shiny. Your nails dry fast. That’s the good. Here’s the bad. The polish is hard to remove. Wrapping your finger in acetone cotton swabs for 5-20 minutes to remove polish. Because the gel is so strong, it doesn’t allow oxygen to get to your nails which can cause damage over time. I’ve had gel manicures a few times. I loved the durability and fresh, shiny look the entire time. As my nails started to grow, I created an ombre effect with a complimenting color on the new growth extending the time to over a month. I use two different products over my regular nail polish. Which one depends on which one I grab because I like them both. Sally’s Beauty sells a product called RUSH for about $5. It’s a quick dry top coat and will help your polish last during your trip. CND also has a quick dry top coat which is also very good. However, I buy CND at the supply warehouse. It might be available at Sephora or Ulta. Hope this helps.
You should get about 10 days from a gel manicure, I am assuming you are talking about gel polish not gel nails. What is harsher on the nails is getting the gel polish off but if you only wear gel once in a while I wouldn’t worry about it. I would not recommend gel polish on toes.
