can anyone reconmend me a good skin care for acne prone skin
I’m 41 years old and I’m looking for a good skin care regimen for my face. I currently go to a dermatologist and I take oral medicines for my acne. My face is very oily . Anybody has suggestions? I really appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Oh Maly7…Same issue as you and I am 40! Acne prone skin AND starting to show lines/wrinkles! I started to post the same question on here! I did recently order the Serious Skincare Continuously Clear Trio (for adult acne) item#221-203. I figured this would be a good starting point. Still on the look out for a good day/night cream that does not clog pores. Good luck!
My daughter & I both use a Clarisonic Mia. My hubby also uses a sonic cleaner but it’s a brand that is very hard to find replacement brushes for. We all use Bare Minerals – bareMinerals Skincare Purifying Facial Cleanser.
I do think your skin would benifit from a Clarisonic.
I have been told that even oily skin needs to be moisturized & stripping your face of excess oil can backfire & cause more oil production. I’m not sure if this is true or not.
My daughter was using Clinique from a dept store. It seemed like every time we went back to the store they added products to her regimen. And her skin kept getting dryer & flakey. It was turning into a mess. It was taking her about 45 mins to wash her face at night for bed.
I had her stop all the Clinique & try the bareMinerals Skincare Purifying Facial Cleanser & a Bare minerals moisturizer. Over time her face improved. She still has dry skin..thats just her, but her face is not flakey & she is back to being my little raving beauty.
I also wonder about the Pro Active …..I see the commercials all the time.
Have you asked your Doc what he would suggest?
I hope you find a product that works for you ! Good luck.
And like I tell my daughter…..
The best thing you can have on your face is a smile !
Paula’s Choice, particularly the 2% BHA.
Great choice Thisgoesto- I also like Serious Skin Care , and mix it with Clinique Acne solutions.
I switch off. I have really never had acne but prevent it in the Summer due to sports.
SERIOUS SKIN CARE DRY-LO – Best luck.:smileyhappy:
maly… We had the worst trouble finding a skincare regimen for my step-daughter’s oily, acne skin. We spent megabucks to cheap on various products and were about to check-out ProActive when I suddenly thought, ‘Gee, I wonder if Sally’s has something we could try’. DUH! As a long-time Sally’s affecionado, we ran down there and, sure enough, they had a line called ‘Beyond Belief ABH’ for her skin-type. I bought it all. And, wonder of wonders, it worked! After only one-week, she was oil and acne-free!
For the first time in her life, she loved her skin… and cried when it finally came true for her. If she misses using this stuff even one day, the next day her skin is starting to break-out. Yeah, she’s a convert for life. She cleanses/moisturizes both morning and night. I think this line is definitely worth a shot for you.
Now, she loves everything in the line except the Exfoliating Facial Scrub preferring to use the Foaming Cleanser with a Sally’s ‘Face Secrets Cotton Cleansing Pad’, (she uses the Clay Mask for deep cleaning once-a-week).
You just have to keep trying until you find what works for you, maly. It’s a process, for sure… and not only very frustrating but expensive as well. Alas, those who seek shall find. Don’t give up hope… there IS a product out there that WILL work for you!
Philosophy has micro peel pads and a moisturizer that also exfoliates ( great for summer ) . The microdelivery peel really made a difference in my skin and I started with it once a week. Now I use it every few weeks, but once summer is here, will use it weekly. If you are seeing a dermatologist already, and getting some treatments delivered to your skin, then maybe hold off until thapart of your treatment is completed. I would like to find something for my teenage son, He wont use too manynitems, but i will look into Sally-thanks Fairemaiden. One more thing, I am older than you, have have not seen a Derm.. Since I tried Philosophy. maybe try the microdelivery peel first and the others if you need it, so as not to overdue it and over dry your skin.
Another thing to think about is your shampoo. I completely agree with the suggestions listed below. My friend has the same problems and taking medication for her skin. Addition to the meds she switched to WEN and it really helped. Meds worked good, but switching shampoo helped even better, especially her scalp. She’s using the green tea by WEN. Good luck, no one wants acne at 41…. BTW she is 39.
I get major break outs at times and I won’t see 41 again until I hit 82. My daughters dermatologist recommended Proactive and it worked for her and I have incorporated this in my skin care and this works fore me.
I had a terrible time at one point with break-outs – never had them before. my face was so badly broken out that my cheeks actually looked swollen. it was horrible. I’m surprised my face isn’t scarred. I used the serious skin care from years ago – when they first started on HSN and boy did that clear me up without drying, etc. and kept me zit free for years. it really does work.
Paula’s choice has a line specifically geared for older ladies still getting acne, called Resist (light blue bottles). They also have a line specifically for bad acne. Also recommend watching their videos on acne. They’re very informative & you can learn a lot about what to use versus not use. I’ve had acne my whole life Paula’s choice is the only things that have truly worked. Proactive is very drying for the skin & is better for younger people. Did nothing for mine, actually made it worse.
Hi maly7! I’m in the same boat! I’m 43, acne (bad at the moment!), veeeery oily skin and peri-menopausal. Horrible! Purity worked some but it has parabens and isn’t cruelty free. The clarisonic made it worse (google clarisonic and oily skin). Serious skincare glygolic is working very well on my acne! It is clearing up my cystic breakouts on my neck, jaw and cheeks. I haven’t seen much improvement on my fine lines so I’m still looking for my HG but until then I’m going to stick with ssc. Good luck 🙂
Cystic acne is painful and frustrating. If you can see a dermatologist do so. After suffering from this condition in my 30’s and 40’s I found that its a medical condition best helped by prescription medication. I refused oral antibiotics because of the multiple complications. I finally found help with one doctor and bless his heart. He prescribed clindamycin topical cleansing pads and retin A micro cream. Only cleanser with soap and water. It’s a treatment that is temporarily drying as I didn’t use moisturizer for a few weeks until I cleared up. I used dermablend makeup to cover the multiple cystic pimples around the lower half of my face. I was itchy and flaking but it cleared. My heart goes out to those who suffer from this and thought to share. It’s totally a condition which can make you feel so down about your life. I hope this helps. It’s no way medical advice or the only way to treat acne. It’s just my opinion and experience of suffering for over 30 years before retin A.
I too suffered from this condition for years and took oral antibiotics. After many years on antibiotics I developed a severe allergy to them and had to stop taking them. I was prescribed clindamycin topical and it worked well. I consistently use a sonic brush for cleansing. I use the SSC lines of “A”, glycolic, and some “C” line products. I also use the the SSC cc makeup line. My facial skin problems are finally under control and I haven’t had any subsequent issues.
I also use Serious Skincare: glycolic, "C", "A", and the Continuously Clear which is the acne line. Each time I add a new product (no matter the brand), it breaks my skin out so I use extra of the Continuously Clear line for a couple days then that takes care of the problem.
Oh btw I am 62 with a slightly oily T zone. This line does not overly dry my skin.
