Just a head's up re: HSN's latest policy. As of Sept 1st they are now charging tax on items ordered from the internet. I know they always had charged tax if you called them but that's why I ordered online due to no tax. Wonder why they changed their policy?

Wow, Hitsville, you make me glad that New York started charging sales tax on purchases a while back. Never thought I'd say that!! I have a feeling you'll be fine with the state taxes but I'm sure it's nerve-wracking to see an HSN tax packet with a number like that. I'm betting all the states will soon be on board with the sales tax added to on-line purchases. Tax free shopping was so nice while it lasted.:-s

well, I can't figure it out. some places charge sales tax, some don't. I don't know how it works and who keeps track of that junk, I mean... does HSN send that report to the IRS? I doubt it, but enclosed was a note that made it clear: don't call HSN for help! lol so... I'm just not gonna sweat it.

last tax season, I was told I would have to declare all my purchases at tax time because HSN did not collect sales tax from my state. So I got sent this huge packet (I pretty much only shop online) and according to HSN... it was like $3k! My husband was mortified, like what the heck am I buying. Nothing he doesn't know about. But still, that was kinda shocking, and I am confused anyway... they really want me to cough that up all at once? At any rate... when we did state taxes, there was NO WHERE to declare that, nothing online, in the tax guide.... so we didn't. I hope that doesn't come back to bite us but if they are going to change the tax laws, they need to change the tax forms.

Good luck folks.

Same thing happened to me. Yesterday I placed an order (I pretty much order something every day [-x) and I was not charged tax. Tonight I ordered Cheryl Burke's shoes and was charged tax on every single item bought. I have been spending way too much money as it is...I am going to have to rethink future purchases now. With the price of shipping and handling, (sometimes both ways), and now tax?...spending is getting too expensive. Even for a shopaholic like me. :-&

I live about 10miles from IL. Our news just did a story on 6 new states charging sales tax on Internet purchases...IL being one of them. It's not Hsn's decision..it's your state. Your fiscal budgets roll over July 1.
tooolate | Inspirer 1 | 07.02.2011 2:48 PM
Illinois, here - all previous orders (last one 6/23) were not charged tax. Placed an order 7/1 (for jewelry) and was charged tax!!! What happened in one week??
edited- did a 'chat' with online c/s and was informed that IL just past a law that went into effect yesterday that onlines have to pay tax...it appears to be state by state wahhhhh - tax was more than s&h which I thought was out of control

I pay sales tax on HSN purchases because I live in Florida now, but I didn't pay any when I lived in North Carolina because HSN did not have a physical presence there (warehouse or distribution center). Although in NC we were SUPPOSED to pay it when we filed our state income tax returns. Of course, nobody paid it, so now NC and other states are suing (or whatever) to get websites to collect the sales tax for online purchases. As for North Carolina, I read that the lost sales tax revenue was in the millions. In these economic times, I'm really not surprised that they are doing this.

Hope this makes sense. I really don't know what the federal law is about this stuff.

HSN started several years ago collecting NC sales tax on all sales including online!

Just the facts

I live in Maryland and am not currently charged sales tax for ONLINE orders. However, yesterday I placed a PHONE order and was charged sales tax. Is this something new?

In my state, tax is charged on phone orders, but not on online orders. Whether you're taxed for online orders depends on your state, but I believe phone orders are always charged tax (which is why I do not order by phone).

In California, we pay a use tax. Everything, except food, that is used in Ca is subjected to use tax.
Basically, if you buy something online or outside Ca, and no Ca sales tax was added; you would have to pay the tax when you file your tax returns.

I don't know what state you are in, but it is possible that your state amended it's sales tax laws. One or two years ago, New York began requiring online retailers to collect sales tax for all purchases made by New York residents. The old law only required sales tax if the retailer had a brick and mortar presence in the state, but the new law says that if the online retailer does business with any VENDORS in the state, than they are required to collect sales tax. It was nice while it lasted, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid sales tax with online purchases these days.

I'm in CA and I always pay tax here and at the Q. I don't pay tax at JTV and Shopnbc. Sales tax is ridiculous. First they tax our paychecks and then our purchases. I don't know about other states but at least they don't charge tax on food here.

I asked on the QVC Board if anyone from Texas had been charged sales tax on a recent online order & a few of them said "no", so hope that is still the case.

I placed an order yesterday and was not charged sales tax & I'm in CT

I never understood why QVC charges sales tax in EVERY State since they are in PA and MAYBE have a warehouse or warehouses elsewhere BUT definately not in CT

When QVC did their 50 in 50 Tour with the bus back in the mid 1990's, they had to establish a "business" in each state....from that point on they could charge sales tax.

I am not sure if this is the case with every state but in Texas you get charged tax on the shipping and handling as well so this can really add up!

#-o I hate to hear this. With shipping and tax I will not be ordering as much as I have in the past. This is the reason I hardly order from the other shopping network.
