Vermeil Tarnish???

Hi Everyone,

Will varmeil tarnish or turn color over time? And does the silver (rodium plated) tarnish or turn color over time?

Thanks!

RE: Vermeil Tarnish???

Depends who you ask. I'll only by vermeil pendants or earrings (which I don't wear frequently.) Bracelets and rings always tarnish on me. Some people swear vermeil never tarnishes (I can't understand this). Can't speak for rodium plate, although I've heard the same positives and negatives as with vermeil. My personal advice is if you want to wear a piece OFTEN, don't buy vermeil. Now, listen to all of the contrary replies...

RE: Vermeil Tarnish???

I agree with you, Bonni. I have had vermeil (or other gold-plated jewelry like Technibond) tarnish terribly. Both gold and rhodium plating can wear off over time, exposing the silver underneath. I don't buy vermeil anymore, and limit my rhodium-plated pieces to earrings, where wear and tear is minimal.

RE: Vermeil Tarnish???

I just bought my first vermiel piece of jewerly. I have until the 31 Jan 09. If it is going to tarnish or wear off it will do it long before then on me. I have never been able to wear this before but heard all the good stories so I decided to give it a try. The rings are really beautiful. If they will just hold up. I will be back soon if they tarnish or turn. I will let you all know. Have a most blessed day. Sincerely,Gesmo

RE: Vermeil Tarnish???

All jewelry tarnishes eventually. I don't understand people who never clean their jewelry. Metals tarnish. It's a fact of life.

And since all gold and silver formulas are not the same, some will tarnish more than others. Depends on the contents of the other metals used in the particular gold or silver formula currently inhabiting your particular piece of jewelry.

I have older Technibond pieces and older solver peices, which never seem to tarnish, although if you polish them with a jewelry cloth, it will be dirty, and the metal suddenly seems brighter. I have newer pieces which do nothing but tarnish, and need to be cleaned constantly.

Gold tarnishes too. It needs to be cleaned just like any other piece of jewelry.

If your gold or vermeil pieces seem to get that brassy look, that's tarnish. Just clean the metal and it will be good as new.

We're talking about tarnish here, where you can polish vermeil or plating 'til the cows come home, and it won't bring back the finish, because it has worn off. Precious metals are another matter; they can be restored with polishing because they are precious through and through. "Brassy" is not the look of vermeil or plating tarnish; it's dull gray. There is no comparison between tarnishing of precious metals (gold does not tarnish; silver does) and vermeil.

Look at the Technibond post on this jewelry forum. My Technibrass rosetta bracelet has turned a brassy color. Won't buy any more. [-x

RE: Vermeil Tarnish???

Hi everyone!

Thanks for all your replies! I think after reading everyone's replies, I think I am going to steer clear of the vermeil jewelry. I would hate to spend so much money on the pieces and have them tarnish on me. I think am going to invest in 14k jewelry and find one piece I really like and can wear again and again for the years to come as oppose to several vermeil pieces and have them tarnish on me. Once they tarnish, it's pretty much a goner.

Thanks again!

Cheers!

RE: Vermeil Tarnish???

With any Vermeil or any plated jewelry if it is worn often enough and in a place where it gets lots of wear the "coating" will come off. I have had rings and bracelets wear off for me in vermeil and technibond. Best to save your money and invest in real gold or silver unless like others said you are buying a necklace or earrings where they do not receive any punishment.

Remember, shiuri, another option is 10k and gold-filled (HSN doesn't sell gold-filled) which NEVER tarnishes, looks just like gold, and is cheaper.
