Every time I get on the computer I check for updates. Tonight, there was just downloading , no percentage shown. Then , a little message popped up which said an error had occurred and I should reinstall McAfee VirusScan Plus . Is that just a fancy way of saying the update didn't take or do I have to reinstall the whole program?!!!!!!!!!
In my next life I want to be a computer geek. The stress is getting to me!!!! ](*,)
Thank you Twinkletoes for answering. When I came back on today it went just fine so I am hoping it was just the terminology because there was actually a fluke of some sort and not a major problem!
We have AVG on an older computer which we haven't used in awhile. It is good but I am hesitant to start up the computer and do the updates because it might take forever. Good to know it is still free as I thought they were going to begin charging.
Lizzie63, I had an experience with a window popping up with the name of my internet security provider...it looked like a legitimate message...the message said there was a problem with the software and it advised me to uninstall it and reinstall. Since I thought it was a real message I uninstalled the software and then tried to reinstall it. It wouldn't reinstall....and to make matters worse, my computer screen became a sea of colors and I ultimately found that my computer had been infected with a virus. The message was a scam. Since then I do not believe any of those pop up messages and/or email messages that come from who knows where....I now go to the particular website and verify before I do anything. Hope this message helps you avoid a real mess like I had....
What jeannellen said is so true. I spent 6 hours earlier this week cleaning out a virus due to a pop-up that looked like it was from my virus cleaner. I then spent another 2 hours with microsoft trying to get into my files. The anti-software people said the virus's or whoever writes these virus, worms, etc. are getting very specialized to make the popups and web sites look legit. I'm going out today and getting an external hard drive because I can't afford to loose 4 years worth of files. Some were backed up on discs, but not all of them. Luckily we were able to recover all files. Becareful what you click on!
Yeah, I'd posted about that but was afraid the post was too long and confusing so I removed it.
Apparently the latest really bad virus comes in a pop-up. I'm thinking it must be through Windows Messenger Service? I'd gotten pop-ups from that when I got a new computer and it took me a long time to figure out how to disable it.
I need to warn family members about it.
I hope that isn't what happened to Lizzie63!
Thank you , Twinkle, jeannellen and clynne. I think everything is okay. Of course , being completely paranoid, I am always waiting to learn the worst is happening. In a moment of complete stupidity I clicked"okay" and then thought , "What have I done?????" Because I did not actually follow through I don't think anything bad happened. I should have known better because the message would not close but being that the updates were still downloading , I figured it was from McAfee and it might have been . And I thought it meant to just try for updates agin.
About a month ago I had the wits scared out of me. I left to get coffee or something, gone about a minute. When I came back, there was a hideous, huge window, dark blue or something in color, designed to look like McAfee and Windows. A "scan" was running (not really), took a few seconds and then advised me I had Trojans and more problems I could ever think of. I "needed" to download the latest version of both to clean everything out. I tried to get rid of the stuff but it kept sending more. I was afraid to just shut down and didn't know what to do.
My husband had just gone to bed and he hates computers anyway! So I finally called a friend of ours who said to just shut down, which I did. He waited while I came back on and everything seemed normal. These things always seem to happen to me when it is late and I am tired. Then I just sit and stare in frozen terror at the screen waiting for a little voice to tell me what to do!
I want someone to write an emergency book for dummies.
Poor jeannellen and clynne, I hope everything is okay now. And thank you, Twinkle for hoping that I didn't get a bad virus. That means a lot just to hear(so to speak) those words!!
Edit: It should be complete s*t*u*p*i*d*i*t*y, Think that's the only one.
